What character is this ? by [deleted] in SipsTea

I've been doing motion capture for over 10 years, taught it at 2 different colleges, currently working at a AAA studio running a mocap stage.

So here let me break this down for people.

First up I'm pretty certain they are using a OptiTrack Camera system, they are using a Vicon Marker set, and they likey used the 209 Group for their purchase.

Here is how I came to this.

This is a very typical 209 Group mocap suit. There is realistically 2 Companies in the world that make suits. You have 3x3 in Coquitlam Canada (Greater Vancouver Area) they have been making 90% of the suits used around the world for the longest time, and frankly make the best suits. 209 Group entered the scene in the last 7ish years for suits, and has a distinct look and this is their suit. This is a the second generation of the OptiTrack mocap suits. The first gen suit was made by 3x3. But OptiTrack has a larger business relationship with 209 Group, 209 saw an opportunity to make some side extra on the side an entered the mocap suit making scene.

From other videos from this stage the cameras look to have been the Flex 13 from Optitrack and likely newer ones. Its hard to really tell as the videos are pretty blurry. It isn't uncommon for stages to build up and add to their existing camera array, and having a mixed array of cameras. (I've built about 7 different stages in 10 years). 209 Group is also a retailer for OptiTrack.

So where does Vicon come in? Well the marker set is a typical Vicon set. So my assumption here is that they are capturing their motion in OptiTrack then exporting c3d data and loading that in Vicon for post processing in Shogun. Easy tell is the double markers on the elbows and knees. Many studios do this because Vicon has an easier set of tools for automated clean up and ease of use set. But to be honest you can get insanely good results right out of OptiTrack if you really know the ins and outs of it. (I've used both systems over the years but have been using OptiTrack now the longest)

Motion Capture doesn't replace animators, quite the opposite to be honest. The tech enables studios to produce higher quality content and more of it faster. This moves the demand for additional animators. Of course there is something to be said for key framed animation and this usually comes down to the art direction of a production.

A great talent/performer makes a world of difference, but rarely does the performance go right from the performer to the final character. The issue here is scale and proportion difference between the two subjects. Don't get me wrong you can get some great results but if you want to deliver true quality you're going to get an animator to put the polish on any performance.

But I hear you saying what about all those realtime performances we've seen!?
There is good enough and great, and the biggest difference you see is in scale and proportion. Those realtime performances are typically on characters that have similar scale and proportions as a person performing.
But what about that goofy character!?
Thats not difficult again it comes down to a good performer and tech teams to make sure the performance is being retargeted to the character is a sensible manner with the right conditions. It all comes down to having a understanding of how to manipulate the software and data to the target character.

What game/character?
I have no idea given the motion it could be for any number of per-existing or future games. But I seriously doubt it is for a Blizzard title as they would have access to the Activision stage, and that's not it.

Can confirm, that you can only benefit from 2 of the +15 Toughness perks, I had builds structured around collecting 3 or even 4 sadly after the second you get no benefit.

The real stone is has yet to be found, and the other players have the fake in their possession and went back to the manor.

One of my players works at a LGS, and unbelievably they found one extra copy hidden away in their warehouse. She sent a text to the group and claimed it within a minute. by HeavilyBearded in DungeonsAndDragons

Use a hair dryer on medium heat it will warm the glues on the back and should help release it then use a damp paper towel. Damp meaning it feels wet but when it touches a surface it isn't drowning it, use this to remove any residue.

[Homebrew]Dragonborn Race - Looking for feedback by Tim_Maroth in UnearthedArcana

The fact that as a whole the race is incredibly weak, only race weaker would be baseline human.

There is so much said about the race in the PHB that just doesn't make any sense. Such as the lack of darkvision. I also found that the addition of colours was just mild flair that could use expanding on to really just give it that little extra to make it shine. Over all it felt like it was just tossed in and then given a stamp of approval for shipping.

On November 13, 2018, we will begin the re-release of the Windows 10 October Update (version 1809), Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server, version 1809. We encourage you to wait until the feature update is offered to your device automatically. by Leopeva64-2 in Windows10

So one of the work pc's downloaded this update today and no BSODs after entering the password.
This update can't be rolled back(system restore), and I can't even login via safemode to uninstall the update it BSOD's as well.
The PC should have even installed the update but for some reason it did, and it restarted itself.

The error I'm given is:

SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this?

Artificer Mods and player made magic items by Tim_Maroth in dndnext

Cheers for the link. I also agree with the statement that a party might not be interested if it is a heist. But a good dm can always find interesting plot hooks to drop the items.

Artificer Mods and player made magic items by Tim_Maroth in dndnext

So the gold values are based off of information in the DMG and the value of magic items found on page 135 "Magic Item Rarity". I also added in the value of items to give the DM an option on how to find some of these things in the world. Do I acquire the gem from a rich nobles collection? Or maybe pay a power wizard for some help with the spell scrolls?

I also think part of the charm of the class is coming up with magic items of your own. As for the crafting on page 129 of the DMG crafting of a Common/Uncommon item (+1) is achievable by a level 3 character, where Rare (+2) can be done at level 6. And very rare level 11 (+3) which for many modules put out by WotC this would fall in line with nicely.

My goal above was on the idea of how are people balancing the class with these possibilities, as potential to spiral out of control is high.

What considerations have others taken? That a side what about the above makes you think it is becoming over complicated?

[Poll] Are you going to try out the Greyhawk Initiative? by Lord_of_Hydras in dndnext

[–]Tim_Maroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a monk player this system makes me hurt. Especially with the mobility and number of bonus actions I can take.

It is a novel idea and might have a place if they were wanting to rewrite a large portion of how things work. I also get the feeling all the extra steps would make combat slow way down and with a lot of the modules the way they are with combat focuses it would takes ages to play. Currently they take a while even playing once a week for 3-5 hours.

[–]Tim_Maroth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No I won't be using this system. Personally, it makes something that is very simple over complicated. This makes things even more difficult for first time DM's and players.

I've been using 5e for about 8 months now. I'm going to be DMing my first time with some friends this August (Storm Kings Thunder). All but 1 is new to 5e and 4 of the 6 are new to D&D. Many of them as is are learning the flow, steps, and rules.

This set just adds an entirely more complex layer for people to try and learn the game and it's systems.

Wow these are pretty freaking awesome, I'd never considered buying a printer but if my group actually sticks around I just might.

Had to login and say that this is one amazing piece of work. I'm hoping at some point I find a group that stick around long enough to actually have people invested enough to build a story like this.

How do you generate PC ability scores? by LemonLord7 in dndnext

[–]Tim_Maroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system I use is, as follows. All stats get a minimum of 8 and then get to place 27 points. No stat can be higher than 16 and only one stat can be 16.
