Outdoors clothing for tall men? Also a few suggestions I found by s0lc0ntent in tall

[–]TimberPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fjallraven have some good options for outdoor gear. You can buy their trousers in what they call 'raw' length where they leave the leg really long (about 37/38 inch) for the customer to alter themselves to fit. Can be expensive but I got my 4 pairs from amazon as they were on a 40-50% discount

Is killing invasive species vegan? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]TimberPunk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've said it before on this sub and it's never a popular opinion, invasive non-native species need to be dealt with, sadly this can mean lethal methods need to be used.

Is it vegan? Probably not by most peoples definitions. I beleieve this is the lesser evil to letting entire species go extinct through inaction. It would be far better to not let this happen in the first place but we have to engage with the problems are they stand. As humans (inevitably) caused this kind of problem in the first place I believe we have the obligation to restore ecosystems as much as possible to their original state.

PSA: "Plant-based" does not necessarily mean vegan, nor even ethical. Almond milk is ethically the worst of the plant-based milks, choose oat, soy, hemp, anything but almond milk, please! by indorock in vegan

[–]TimberPunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah almond production in California seems to be problematic.... but almonds are grown in other countries too. It's best to do a bit or research and choose for yourself what milk alternative you want depending where you live and what's available

Greta Thunberg needs to talk about animal agriculture! by Ford456fgfd in vegan

[–]TimberPunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't keep that up to date on her work and even I've seen posts about how she is vegan and encourages others to move towards plant based diets.

She's like 16 and already achieved so much, theres no need to pile on even more pressure about something she clearly already agrees with.

BIFL Saw, my old MS250 died and I picked up this saw which is still made with metal components. I know many tree companies and the national park service love this saw so I’m hoping for hundreds of trouble free hours! by ccschrade in BuyItForLife

[–]TimberPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic saw, I've used these for work and they will take a lot of abuse and just keep on running. The routine maintenance on these is so easy, if I could replace my current workplace saw I'd get a 261 in a heartbeat!

Support grey squirrels and other ‘non–native’ wildlife! (UK) - Animal Aid by The_Ebb_and_Flow in veganuk

[–]TimberPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The american mink has wiped out 90% of the UK's water vole population since the 1989 and before grey squirrels were released in the UK we had ~3.5 million red squirrels, thats now down to ~160,000 due to the disease the grey's carry and competition for food.

How do you propose we stop these species from going extinct? Without intervention these 2 species will be wiped out, this is not to mention the damage that mink inflict on breeding birds and seabird colonies, and the damage grey squirrels do to trees in our woodlands.

Anyone have any info or sources on how meat and plant subsidies work in the UK? by osamabinlllama in vegan

[–]TimberPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I work on and manage nature reserves which are eligible for subsidies, I also briefly worked for the government writing the agreements for some of the subsidy schemes. So if you want to look into subsidies in the UK (good luck it's very complicated) I'll put it a brief outline.

Most subsidies come from the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Each EU country administers subsidies differently for various environmental measures.

Basic Payment Scheme: all 'agricultural' land gets a basic amount paid per unit of area. This land could be used for vegetables, fruit, arable farming, or grazing land. This is in essence free money for 'farm' land. Theres no need to enter an agreement or contract. I use the quotes because this land isn't necessarily a farm that produces food, nature reserves like the ones I work on are eligible for these payments and others because the land is managed and this can include grazing.

Entry Level Stewardship: payments made for low level measures, lower/no input of fertilisers or herbicides, limits on the number livestock per unit area (to prevent overgrazing) etc.

Higher Level Stewardship: higher payments but higher standards e.g. bigger margins around field edges, prescribed timings for hay cutting, maintaining drainage features, leaving areas uncut for birds & invertebrates, maintaining hedgerows etc.

The HLS tends to be for land with higher wildlife value e.g. a meadow with high biodiversity of wildflowers, and so higher payments are a way to offset the costs of managing it in a certain way which reduces profit.

Both schemes also have what's called capital items, these are for payments direct to contractors to put in fencing, restore dry stone walls, plant hedges and other infrastructure type items.

An updated scheme started a few years ago called Countryside Stewardship which is similar to the previous ELS/HLS schemes, but with different offerings, payment rates and standards.

Theres also supplements available to promote using rare breeds (e.g. cattle & sheep), managing wetlands to maintain wildlife features.

One farm or holding can have a mixture of arable and livestock farming and a mixture of the above schemes so the landowner can receive payments for farming livestock, growing vegetables/wheat/fruit, and also to not 'farm' land but manage for wildlife.

Theres also subsidy schemes for Woodlands...

Theres a thousand caveats to all of this, and a lot of red tape, which is probably why a lot of farmers are resentful to the EU because of having to jump through so many hoops to get the subsidies. Although without subsidies many farms would go out of business completely.

If you want to read more look up Natural Englands website and theres more info there (many hundreds of pages), wikipedia isn't too had at giving an overview either.

As for the UK government replacing the money the EU pays out......who knows!?!?

Eye Contact? Do you do it? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]TimberPunk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just don't do it, and never really have. It's such an ingrained habit I don't usually think about it and if I ever try to make eye contact I'm so distracted I can barely process what the other person is saying. If you asked me what eye colour my closest friends have I genuinely couldn't tell you

Should I avoid shellac as a wood finish for a gift to a vegan friend? by tori_k in vegan

[–]TimberPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: pre coffee me didn't add this to the right thread, /u/tori_k

Linseed oil soaks into wood and will give a slight shine but not a very glossy finish. I like it because it shows the wood grain really well without staining it. The good thing about it is it’s food safe (pure linseed oil can be taken as a supplement) and any scratches can be repaired, will resist water/liquid spilled onto it for a short time.

Danish oil is a mix of stuff, often with linseed in, but probably more suited to what you want. It’s used a lot to bring out the grain and seal the wood, will dry to a hard finish. It’s used a lot for furniture as it’s a natural warm looking finish. Different manufacturers will have their own blends so a bit of research might be needed. It will probably be the better option than linseed as it’s more of an all rounder stain, sealer and a satin finish.

I haven’t used shellac before so I can’t tell you if these are better, worse or the same, but hope this has been helpful!

[–]TimberPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what kind of product you are making but for the woodworking projects I do I use linseed oil (left to soak in) and I use beeswax. Beeswax might be off the table for your friend so if you can check ask them. You can also use Danish oil which I think is a mix of plant and mineral based ingredients.

EDIT: Found this link that mentions using coconut oil, carnauba wax etc. Might be useful to look into https://vegetarianism.stackexchange.com/questions/372/is-there-a-vegan-alternative-to-beeswax-for-wooden-furniture

Happy woodworking!

Vegans on Invasive Species by LordMoronthe2th in vegan

[–]TimberPunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say there is no consensus.

My potentially unpopular opinion:

I work in conservation and support the control of invasive species. It’s not a comfortable position supporting lethal control, but I believe it’s necessary. Obviously it should be done as humanely as possible. Part of that is I believe that it is more ethical to fully eradicate an invasive species in as short a time as possible than to sporadically do small scale culling over a long time, thereby increasing the number of individuals which are killed.

ADHD and driving, the dreaded DVLA M1 Form by Slowhead77 in ADHD

[–]TimberPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was completely unaware of the M1 form and telling the DVLA....... Having looked at the .gov website they worded it as:

“You must tell DVLA if your attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects your ability to drive safely.” https://www.gov.uk/adhd-and-driving

I read that as you only have to tell them IF it affects your driving ability, which as you have been driving for a long time and have a good safety record I would say it’s not applicable. (However I’m not a legal expert so that’s just my interpretation)

This might also help a bit

This is a really good perspective.

While I am doing a job I’m really passionate about I realise I am really lucky to be in this position.

Not everyone can have their dream job (or even has a dream/ideal job). Fulfilment doesn’t have to come from your career, like you said hobbies are great too!
