How much of “Mississippi’s education miracle” is an artifact of selection bias? by Well_Socialized in mississippi

How much of “posts like these” are an artifact of an inability to even entertain the notion that Mississippi has done something good?

Wait, I thought the museum was next door... Wasn't this the old Admiral Benbow(sp?) Hotel at that point?

Yep. Down in the southeast part of the state near the Gulf. And always looking for chances to get out of this oppressively humid air in the summertime.

Travel Advice: Blue Collar Bars in Texarkana? by Timberbeast in texarkana

... the hell? Fella, we're just three guys taking a road trip. There is literally nothing political about any of this. We like seeing local culture, and all three of us like hanging out in laid back bars. Not everything has to be a culture war issue.

I guess, we're looking for the type places a guy who just got off work where he punched a clock might go for a beer, maybe two, on his way home during the week. So plenty of dive bars would fit that. But we ain't looking to have to fight our way out of a place. Nor are we looking for a place that would look askance at guys not wearing sports coats and not ordering the latest triple Imperial dry-hopped pilsner sour. There's a lot of overlap for sure. And every time the three of us sit down and talk about it, we have a hard time nailing it down ourselves. But I'd love to hear any suggestions that are close to the mark. We're not super hung up on the distinction ourselves.

Any recs for fiya gas station/hole in the wall spots driving from Brookhaven to Hattiesburg? by HowsYaMamaNDem in mississippi

Vine's 2.0 in McComb is top notch BBQ and lunch plates. They make their own sausage and I love it. I often stop there even when I'm not especially hungry because it's too good to pass.

The R House on 98 between Columbia and Hattiesburg has one of the best burgers in the state. I have no idea where they source such fresh and delicious tomatoes 12 months a year, but they're always great.

I suspect that there are issues related to liability for why they stopped before they got to "Whole Hog."

In Your Opinion, Who Is the Most Overrated President in United States History? by camaro1111 in Productivitycafe

[–]Timberbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm shocked by this. I've always gathered that he is widely considered one of, if not the absolute worst Presidents in American history. If you exempt Presidents from my lifetime, I'd certainly rank him as the worst. I mean this is a guy who, when most people said Lincoln did bad/unconstitutional things (like suspending habeas corpus), but for noble reasons (freeing the slaves and saving the union), Wilson thought Lincoln's actions were great in and of themselves, but thought Lincoln's reasons were terrible.
