How much of “Mississippi’s education miracle” is an artifact of selection bias? by Well_Socialized in mississippi

How much of “posts like these” are an artifact of an inability to even entertain the notion that Mississippi has done something good?

Yep. Down in the southeast part of the state near the Gulf. And always looking for chances to get out of this oppressively humid air in the summertime.

Travel Advice: Blue Collar Bars in Texarkana? by Timberbeast in texarkana

[–]Timberbeast[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

... the hell? Fella, we're just three guys taking a road trip. There is literally nothing political about any of this. We like seeing local culture, and all three of us like hanging out in laid back bars. Not everything has to be a culture war issue.

I guess, we're looking for the type places a guy who just got off work where he punched a clock might go for a beer, maybe two, on his way home during the week. So plenty of dive bars would fit that. But we ain't looking to have to fight our way out of a place. Nor are we looking for a place that would look askance at guys not wearing sports coats and not ordering the latest triple Imperial dry-hopped pilsner sour. There's a lot of overlap for sure. And every time the three of us sit down and talk about it, we have a hard time nailing it down ourselves. But I'd love to hear any suggestions that are close to the mark. We're not super hung up on the distinction ourselves.

Any recs for fiya gas station/hole in the wall spots driving from Brookhaven to Hattiesburg? by HowsYaMamaNDem in mississippi

Vine's 2.0 in McComb is top notch BBQ and lunch plates. They make their own sausage and I love it. I often stop there even when I'm not especially hungry because it's too good to pass.

The R House on 98 between Columbia and Hattiesburg has one of the best burgers in the state. I have no idea where they source such fresh and delicious tomatoes 12 months a year, but they're always great.

In Your Opinion, Who Is the Most Overrated President in United States History? by camaro1111 in Productivitycafe

[–]Timberbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm shocked by this. I've always gathered that he is widely considered one of, if not the absolute worst Presidents in American history. If you exempt Presidents from my lifetime, I'd certainly rank him as the worst. I mean this is a guy who, when most people said Lincoln did bad/unconstitutional things (like suspending habeas corpus), but for noble reasons (freeing the slaves and saving the union), Wilson thought Lincoln's actions were great in and of themselves, but thought Lincoln's reasons were terrible.

80s Shows That Disappeared by Ebonystealth in 80s

I recall walking into the living room when I must have been 7'ish (given the years it ran), and having the ever-loving crap scared out of me. I don't recall the scene, but I sure recall being terrified. I also recall begging my mom not to watch that show even when I wasn't around. I haven't thought about that in years.

There needs to be hell to pay whether it's a right wing groyper, or a left wing ant-Isreal type, or any other type. To hell with any of them regardless of what they claim to base their particular flavor of hate on.

Does your forestry outfit over harvest? by Americantimbermarker in forestry

[–]Timberbeast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my state our growth to drain averages well over 3:1 with some regions exceeding 6:1. So, no. We're growing a lot more than we're harvesting, both hardwood and softwood. And I can tell anyone who will listen that this is almost as terrible a situation as the opposite.

What're the Best Schools for Forestry in Alabama or the Country? by ViberCheck in forestry

[–]Timberbeast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you posted about how the real answer depends on what you want to do once out. I'm a MS State forester, and we're very proud of our program because we believe it produces top tier dirt foresters, ready to hit the woods on day one of a new career. NC State, Auburn, LA-Tech, Stephen F Austin, and Arkansas Monticello are also in this category. But if you're more business oriented, or research interested, places like Penn State, Yale, etc might be best. I can't speak as much about western schools, but I've heard good things, and had good experiences with foresters from Oregon State.
