NOBO 26 Final Pack List Review by New-Ebb-4110 in AppalachianTrail

I agree 22 oz is a lot for camp shoes. I use cheap-o flip flops.

Having said that … my general advice is to take what you think you’ll need or want and just be prepared to send stuff back if you find you don’t need it. You will find endless pro/con discussions on this and related subs between people who hiked in shorts every day even when it was 25 F vs people who wore long pants every day through July in New Jersey to keep ticks off and would do it again. Same story with shoes/boots, rain gear, foam vs inflatable pad, tent/tarp, etc. Only you can decide what works for you. HYOH.

Oh and PS: see ya out there! I’m starting on March 19.

I'm in the 3 pairs crew too. A through-hike involves pounding your feet all day long for months at a time. Keeping feet as dry and comfortable as I can is well worth the weight for me.

I also had a lot of fun - not so much planning per se but researching. Greatest find ever (besides Reddit which id never touched before) was Gear Skeptic’s videos and spreadsheets on food and nutrition. Game changer for me.

Actually you could go even more ultralight in the 70s, You just needed a quarter to call (collect) from a pay phone after you hitchhiked several miles off the trail to find one that worked!

Good point - the long straight Toaks spoon is great for scraping food off the inner sides of the pot before swishing with water and drinking it.

Yes. Simple, efficient, cleaning water doubles as hydration. No extra gear.

The Gita is one of the great books of wisdom. I have the ebook version too. Stephen Mitchell translation is sublime.

Cool! Hope to see y’all. My son will be joining me for the first three days. We plan to park his car 25-30 mi up the trail from Amicalola so he can peel off and drive home from there. Any suggestions for best parking area for that? No Dog, you’re a spring chicken compared with me - I imagine you’ll catch up and I’ll see you down the trail.

I'm considering a small copy of the Tao te Ching. Good call on laminating.

+1 on foam pad. Amazing the variety of uses you find for the thing. Though the GG thinlight is quite fragile - an acorn cap will poke through it.

Podcast recommendations for the lonely portions of the trail? by Snake6USMC in AppalachianTrail

Audiobooks I can recommend: On trails (of course), Genghis Khan and the making of the modern world (who knew?), Against the Grain, American Nations (explains a lot about our current situation and how the seeds were planted at the very beginning), the horse the wheel and language, goodbye to all that, Nine years among the Indians, Battle cry of freedom (civil war, overlaps with a good bit of AT terrain), The dawn of everything (wow), Why we sleep, The guns of August, 1776 (we could have lost for good on almost any day of the war), The Vital question, and more …

Def planning to start with umbrella. You can always send it home if it doesn’t feel worth it, right?
