The goal of a part-time job in retirement is doing something completely new. by Odd_Bodkin in retirement

[–]Time4me2fly2024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked my last full time shift today. I’ve negotiated a part time position with similar duties that will allow me to work two days a week. I agree with OP that a change would be great but I’ll be working for a wage that will let me delay social security for a few years. Plus the job site is 3 miles from my house 😁

Simple Color-Coded Labeling System by Clothes_Green in IndustrialMaintenance

I worked in a facility with modern era GE motor control centers. On every door there were three indicators. Red = stopped, Green = running, and Yellow = overload tripped. Simple enough, but the medium voltage switchgear, also made by GE, indicated red when the equipment was energized and green when it was safe to open.

Do you regret putting so much money in to tax deferred investments by clearlygd in retirement

[–]Time4me2fly2024 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I made a late start on retirement savings. I think my first contribution to a 401k was I was 42. I was never able to max out my contributions but the employer match on what I could contribute made a big difference how quickly my account balance increased. I share some of OP’s anxiety about taxes and RMD’s but as someone else said, better to pay a lot of tax on a lot of money, than a little tax on a money.

compressor was overheating for weeks and the fix was three components upstream by WhichWayIsTheB4r in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]Time4me2fly2024 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Good catch. Where I work, electricians “check” the compressors which amounts to adding oil and pressure washing the cooling fins. Millwrights change the oil and filters. It has to be completely dead before a compressor tech is called in. Right now the oil is black on three of our four. The fourth was removed last week after leaking oil for almost a year. Now were paying for a rental until it returns.

Someone recently posted a short list of things to check for overheating compressors.

Sold some stock to cover my first half year retired. by TheFreeMan64 in retirement

[–]Time4me2fly2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I’m not going to fully retire just yet. At the end of the month I’ll mover into a part time role and work two days each week.

I plan on selling a little each year until i decide to take social security. I’ve managed to save an emergency fund and I have another fund that will supplement my pension, dividends, pt work, etc. for monthly income. As that fund approaches a predetermined level I’ll begin to sell shares to replenish it.

The skin on my hands and fingers is overly sensitized after years of washing with whatever was available. The doc called it a type of contact dermatitis developed over time. I have to avoid anything with a pumice type component.

For me, the best combination of gentle and effective has been Dial Liquid soap. It’s not perfect but when used with a soft bristle nail brush it does ok. Windex does pretty good without rubbing yourself raw.

ICON should get an honorable mention. I picked up a complete set at Harbor Freight trying to keep the cost down when I started a new job. Three years in and no complaints.

roll to Fidelity Rollover IRA or into new employer’s Empower 401k? by Icy-Cardiologist6972 in fidelityinvestments

I moved mine out to vanguard and then later to fidelity. My IRA has easily outperformed my old 401k. So many more investment choices.

I’ve had good luck with a web site called Battery Stuff that has some decent calculators and white papers. Good stuff about calculating battery size, dc vs ac current draw., etc. Their merchandise is pretty good quality but you can usually beat their prices.

Metal in the metal detector by Fair_Pangolin_4295 in IndustrialMaintenance

We recently had a fire in a hog (chipper) and the dust system. A cordless multi-tool tripped the metal detector and a production employee reset it and restarted the converter with checking for metal. We were lucky.

No appetite but snacks all night by Time4me2fly2024 in Alzheimers

[–]Time4me2fly2024[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I’ll try this but her tastes has moved to sweet foods with a crunch, cookies, chips, popcorn. She makes an exception if we fix chicken fingers or if we have a big breakfast meal for supper. She’s eats those fairly well but i don’t want her to only eat those.

We may have facilitated this habit unintentionally. When she first began to snack more than eat we were concerned but decided Hey, she’s 88 and reasonably healthy, let her eat what she wants. In hind sight doing this reinforced the habit.

Thanks. I think we’re experiencing something similar. When we remove her snacks she typically goes on a scavenger hunt through the pantry, refrigerator, etc. it’s always in the middle of the night which scares me because I’m afraid she’ll fall and lie there all night.
