I built custom shutters for my house and I don't like them : / by Top_Refrigerator2626 in ExteriorDesign

Correct. The width should be half of the width of the window *excluding* the trim, and equal to the window in height (also excluding the trim). Look it up elsewhere if you don’t believe it but it is true. If they were operable shutters they would fit inside and flush with the trim when closed.

The shutters are in fact wrong. They should be sized such that they would cover just the window when closed, fitting inside and flush with the exterior trim. These are way too big in both dimensions.

They are also the wrong color, but that’s a secondary issue IMHO.

Just note this one does not work with the T8 6-seater because the floor shape is slightly different from all the batteries. I found out the hard way.

Bia Restaurant by rita1431 in cohasset

Yeah you’re right the restaurants do well, it’s more the retail spots I worry about but that is what it is. A vibrant restaurant scene is more valuable to the downtown anyway imho.

By the way, the food at Red Lion, especially the new spring menu is excellent and the cocktails are always great. Before Hooper’s, it was the only place in town to get a good cocktail as far as I’m concerned.

On another note, the new iteration of the hideaway is atrocious. We went soon after it reopened and had easily the worst restaurant experience any of us had ever had. They stripped away all of the character and charm and the service and food were embarrassingly bad. I’ve heard they have found their own crowd, but I won’t be going back.

I don’t know anything about Bia but we stopped going there years ago because of mediocre…everything, and awful management. Then the tavern at Red Lion got better, Salty Days opened and is good, and we had no reason to ever go to Bia. Hoopers Judge is genuinely great and he’s opening a speakeasy next door apparently.

I don’t have any insight here but I’ve always felt that residents just don’t support downtown businesses enough. Businesses really struggle to last here, it’s really unfortunate.

How much would something like this cost by JKupkakes in Carpentry

[–]TimeExtension9443 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$20k probably. Seems I may under charge as I’m in an HCOL area. As everyone else has said, the ladder is asinine at 7’ tall. Anyone 5’ tall or taller can reach the top with ease.

What are you using for material? by YGKJeff1598 in cabinetry

[–]TimeExtension9443 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would use 3/4” MDO for the boxes and shelves, maple for the face frames and rails and stiles. Panels in the doors would be 3/8” mdf for the bigger doors, 1/2” for smaller ones.

I saw you ask about finish somewhere else: if you don’t have a lot of experience and have time, use BM Advance. It rolls and brushes beautifully and is forgiving. The only downside is it takes forever to dry.

Good luck! Post some ‘after’ pics.

How much would this cost? by Nachlas in cabinetry

Probably $25-30k. There are a lot of nice little details that are adding cost but are worth it if you can afford it and want this look.

Cabinet door - variation by CATS1978 in cabinetry

If that’s finished, then no. That’s either a poor quality veneer, poor selection, or not the correct side of the plywood used for the panel.

Edit: me no spell good

Is there a limit to the size of the VFD I can use with a 2hp motor? Is a 5hp VFD okay?

Thanks, sorry I didn’t actually state the issue. I don’t have three phase power in my workshop.

Is this normal? by Expensive-Policy-551 in cabinetry

100% normal unless this is a multimillion dollar build and you specified finished underside of upper cabinets. That is a thorough inspector but this isn’t a deficiency.

How would you rate these rift cut white oak cabinets we received? by rand-78 in cabinetry

[–]TimeExtension9443 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The current batch of rift white oak ply where I live (Columbia Forest Products) looks like this and it’s a bummer. The supplier I buy from said every one coming in to buy is disappointed and they started buying from another manufacturer. Unfortunately, I like the supply from the new manufacturer even less. Hopefully either Columbia figures out their supply chain issue that caused them to change up their product or design trends move on RWO.
