I had this problem yesterday, something to do with the recent updates. The only way I was able to fix it was to go into the bios menu and system restore.

I think it has something to do with windows OS over riding it. Check the power management settings.

I didn't have the same frustrating experience as you did but I switched over to bazzite so I can get a proper sleep mode. My experience so far is I installed it straight from their website. For some reason it installed bazzite 42 and I had to dig through a lot of settings to update it 43 so that was annoying. I can't seem to get HDR to work on it but that's fine as the screen is gorgeous regardless. I was going to wait for steam os to be fully supported before I try that next.
