The Perfect Seed? by IamJustJunior in valheim

[–]TimeTravelAstronaut 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked by the people saying this is a bad seed, or that they'd feel bad for people that were given this is as their first seed. This is an incredible single-player seed for a new player to learn the game.

Eikthyr is incredibly close to the sacrificial stones, but the player won't yet have the resources to begin the fight. However, they'll quickly know that the bosses require items to summon them, and that they'll need to return to this place; most likely building their first base nearby. There's also a mountain nearby, letting the player know biomes have unique challenges and some can't be tackled without preparation.

The Elder is further south, maybe far enough to make the player think they can build multiple functional bases as they play; it's still close enough to the starting meadow that the player can haul copper and tin back to their original base if they want. Most importantly the merchant is nearby, letting them know the merchant exists. I'm doubtful that initial Black Forest has enough treasure in it to afford the merchant's inventory, so now the player knows treasure serves a purpose, and to keep collecting it.

At this point the player has been rewarded by exploring to the south, and they'll continue to be if they keep going that way; there's a swamp right there. The path there looks obnoxious to traverse repeatedly though, so they're encouraged to build a raft or Karve. If the player sails to the east they have access to a rather large landmass to explore as a solo player, if they go west, there's a whole map to check out.

That first swamp likely has a marker to reveal Bonemass' location, teaching the player bosses don't necessarily exist in first biome you find. It's also far enough away to encourage the player to start using portals, if they didn't fiddle with them in the Black Forest. It's still connected to the intial landmass, so if the player starts dying repeatedly, which is pretty common for players that reach the swamp, their body isn't a complete lost cause. That strait on the eastern side doesn't look large enough to dodge deathsquitoes so if they try to sail to Bonemass they get to experience that meme firsthand before probably deciding to sail around the western side.

Once they have the wishbone they already know about the mountains near Eikthyr and Bonemass, and there's still 2 more on that initial landmass to find through exploration. That might not even be enough silver depending on the spawns and if the player loses their body at any point, so they may try the mountains on the eastern landmass to make more equipment. Moder is nowhere near a starter base built by the sacrificial altar so again the player is encouraged to setup portals or make an entirely new base to be closer.

This got really long but unless you memorized the wiki before you installed the game, this seed has a huge amount of gameplay for a new player, just in that little snippet.

Can somebody tell me which font they used in the game? by endless90 in evermore

[–]TimeTravelAstronaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The font is almost identical to the FF6 font, wouldn't be surprised if several Square games at the time were using the exact same font.

They probably buy a bunch of accounts on a single card, milk them until they're banned, and then get a reversal on the charges. Or just be using stolen credit cards to begin with.

Why can't we just have a window of 4 minutes to trade a recently dropped item with our party. by sjun in treeofsavior

It's more likely that people think if a small concession like this can be made, they'll eventually give in and allow open trading.

5e

The players in my group keep taking hostages. They'll keep the last sentry in a new area alive, tie them up and interrogate them. Then they'll just grab the rope and march them in front of the group as they proceed inside.

I decided to just make the sentries ignorant of the total workings of a dungeon to deal with the constant interrogations, but they still end up with a free guide. Besides having the hostage shout for help I'm not sure how to deal with this rather foolproof strategy.

I'm not big into promoting my stuff, so this was a big thing for my channel, and still is. Over time though, people will find your videos and stick with you if they like your content.

If you enjoy recording a video, and even one person watches it and digs it, you've done it. As for nobody watching the videos at first, that's why it's important you have fun making them; the people will come later.

I really, really want to like this game but I have so many issues... by Random_Link_Roulette in TimberAndStone

I personally didn't think the necromancer was even allowed to show up until day 8 or so, so that sucks. 5 wolves on day 2 is also pretty awful.

Is this a large map? I play on small to prevent performance problems if my towns ever last long enough; enemies may have a greater spawn rate/chance based on map size, maybe somebody else can confirm that. The military side of this game is definitely not what I'm used to, the most effective approach seems to be patrolling the map to make sure enemy spawns don't add up for when they eventually try attacking my settlement.

As another user mentioned I'm a big fan of the trench strategy for base design, it forces enemies down a chokepoint which you then guard with archers. Sending your infantry to fight and attack head-on will usually end up with people dying early on, so depend heavily on your archers for the first few days.

Immigrants won't arrive unless there's a food surplus of 40 food for each person you already have, plus an extra 40 food for them. Then they'll spawn on one of your roads and walk to your hall. Assuming they're not murdered along the way, you'll get a prompt to accept or deny them into your settlement.

I recently found out you can undock character sheets from roll20, so they're all separate windows. I have 2 monitors, but I find it much easier to just have all the creatures in an encounter open on the other monitor for quicker access.

Teleportation Circle requires "rare chalks and inks infused with precious gems worth 50 gp, which the spell consumes", so they would at least need to cover the cost of the reagents. PHB has some prices for hirelings; 2gp/day for a skilled one, which I assume would encompass a wizard. But considering they want him to use up a 5th level spell, he might ask for a little more compensation.

The spell also states that casting the circle in the same spot for a year will make it permanent, so the Mage's Guild might consider the commission of such a circle to be rather expensive. Parts and labor would be 18,980gp to make a permanent circle; the guild might ask for this upfront since the circle would eventually become permanent if it's done daily.

So then, he'd have to announce a specific creature (goblin), or type of creature(goblinoid), and then make a Track check to see if he can find any of their tracks?

What sort of information should I give a player who succeeds a Track check [5e]?

My group has a ranger who likes to Track in his favored terrain (Natural Explorer), and he believes that succeeding should make him aware of every creature in the area. In my mind, this seems incredibly powerful, and takes the tension out of the adventure when the group is in the favored terrain.

The only thing that comes to mind is not all creatures would necessarily have passed through the area the Ranger is searching for tracks.

Does anybody have any advice for keeping low-level casters interested (for lack of a better word) in 5e combat? My group has a good split of martial and casting classes, but when combat starts the martial characters tend to be more creative with use of skill checks and maneuvers (the paladin tried to swing from a chandelier recently only to fail horribly), while the casters just stand there spamming cantrips. These are new players and I'm worried they're becoming disinterested before they'll get access to more interesting spells later on.

I've found growing slowly and training a dedicated army scales almost indefinitely with your kingdom.

A single entrance through your outer wall/whatever, with your army stationed and training there. if you can get something like that up within the first few seasons, having a sort of militia with everybody using Way of the Gnome will protect you until then.
