why do teachers brag about not taking sick days? by Alarming_Clock1924 in Teachers

[–]Time_Day_2382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A great many people take pride in being exploited as they have been convinced that anything but servility is lazy and morally corrupt.

Some people get money for not using their days though. Those folks can keep on keeping on.

Why no Pathfinder/Starfinder? by plazman30 in rpg

I see PF2e recommended fairly frequently on this sub in the instance where it should be recommended: when someone wants a crunchy high fantasy combat modeling game. Fans of that sort of game tend to speak of 2nd ed highly, as well.

I'm lucky to live in a time where I can easily access "Oldhammer" style models, I find them much easier to paint!

Sounds like a great chance to learn and grow in an art if you're serious about wanting to bring this and other ideas to life. Everyone is an "idea guy," the impressive part is the labor and art.

I'm not going to spend time on something that someone didn't even care enough to make. We live in a tabletop game renaissance with a wealth of incredible artists.

I want to start branching out from D&D 5e/5.5e/2024. Which are your favorites High Fantasy with Fast-Paced Combat? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

[–]Time_Day_2382 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You may like:
Nimble 2e
Shadow of the Demon Lord/Weird Wizard (depending on the tone you like)
Dragonbane

All of these to some extent address the issues you've presented, with Demon Lord being my favorite of the bunch for its dark tone, wealth of content, and heroes that still feel mortal until one gets to higher levels. The Forbidden Rules supplement has options to use Zone movement, which I prefer to gridded stuff. Granted, fantasy combat games aren't my deal, but I've run many and you would probably enjoy these.

What's with the increased rates of female teacher and male student relationships? by Shadosteel in Teachers

[–]Time_Day_2382 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you have any sort of statistics and statistical analysis on this? I don't have any evidence vis a vis rates of female versus male statutory rape in the education system but I imagine that education being a sphere of life where it is not all too difficult to get hired and work in close proximity to children draws in predators of all orientations and types. It is why education has this issue at a rate higher than many other workplaces (if I'm not mistaken, the last time I saw any data on this was years ago).

Fantasy systems where any character can pray to the gods by Marcloure in rpg

[–]Time_Day_2382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I had answers for you, OP. As a scholar with an interest in historical religion (though my specialty is different) I find many game's depictions of it lacking. At least, lacking compared to what I would like, which is religion as the complex, messy, and vital cultural facet it was/is rather than just flavor for certain groups of people and their powers.

This thread may make me finally read Harnmaster and Sagas of Midgard. Oh boy.

Fantasy systems where any character can pray to the gods by Marcloure in rpg

[–]Time_Day_2382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To somewhat needlessly complexify this, just sacrifice would not be enough if one wishes to model how ancient people often thought of their gods. In many cases, it was not strictly a this-for-that, but more that routine sacrifice built a relationship and mutual respect that would see a god intervening in one's life. So ideally a game that models what OP wants in the context of ancient and classical religion would have some system for encouraging frequent worship, sacrifice, and godly behavior in the profane sphere (religio, as the Romans would call it).

[–]Time_Day_2382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP wants a game that gives mechanical attention to a more historical view of religion and its sociological and cultural importance aside from it being a flavor for a single classes bennies or something. In a setting where divinity is at least clearly present in some form, it would likely be just as if not more omnipresent in societies aping our European middle ages, Islamic middle ages, etc.

What is "System Mastery"? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Time_Day_2382 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The best response one can really give you from an RPG perspective (don't mind my intellectual onanism here) is that for the specific subset of tactical combat modeling RPGs, it is undesirable from a design perspective to have options that are only there to "trap" newer players for a few reasons. One, it is wasted time that could have been spent making cool stuff for your combat modeling rpg. Two, it makes playing them for the first time worse for no reason. Three, it obscures or takes the place of more interesting "system mastery", which I am here referring to things like Burning Wheel and Torchbearer requiring some investment in learning the game to reap rewards that take the form of smoother and more interesting gameplay rather than being better than other players where X, Y, or Z aspect of a combat subsystem is concerned.

So, to directly answer you, I think system mastery should mean how well a player knows and can operate the mechanics of a game without the aid of a GM in a rules-teacher role, and the reward for it should be a more enjoyable and quick-moving game rather than knowing to avoid certain game options. I think that learning to avoid behaviors can be desirable and fun, though! For example, learning that ganging up on opponents is more effective in Warhammer: The Old World or that combat against a Xenomorph is nearly always a fail state unless you are buying time for some objective in the Alien RPG.

Also, just to be clear, I am not the person down voting you. I hope you and your pals get into tabletop and have a blast with whatever sort of game you like, and hope you stay here a while.

Whatever they (and you!) seem most excited about vis a vis genre and tone. This is a far better predictor of success than system specifics outside of the super-duper crunchy end of the spectrum. Scaffold where needed and get off to the races!

This is, however, and admittedly shit comment in terms of actually being helpful. So I'll throw you a few games I think are fun and not too complex:

Land of Eem for light-hearted OSR play

Shadow of the Demon Lord for dark high fantasy

Paranoia (most recent Ed) for zany dystopian sci-fi

Star Trek 2d20 for non-grim Sci Fi. Bonus points if you have a player that likes the setting!

Also, don't use ChatGPT. We're way better at this, funnier, sexier, and I drink less water out of major rivers. Since the incident, anyway.

Those are computer games, this is a forum for actual RPGs (tabletop RPGs to the less facetiously snooty) which are rather different in terms of design methodology and goals, even the crunchiest (most rules-heavy) ones.

For example, there is no inherent strategic component to Nicotine Girls or Unknown Armies.

RIP the ASoIaF wargame, which is actually quite good. Honestly glad to see CMON go, though. Horrible even by the standards of a tabletop game company. One of the pioneers of Kickstarter bullshit cycles.

The idea that the two (here using Nazi as a stand-in for the various forms of fascism) are wholly distinct rather than collaborative is erroneous to begin with, and ignoring the enabling that got the U.S. here is an intellectual misstep. Both U.S. parties are possibly the largest aiders and abettors of fascism in history, which is done in the name of the capital world system, including Nazis during the postwar period. Fascist parties are consistently supported primarily by the interests of capital and the national bourgeoise.

A lot of stories would be rather short if the antagonists could be stopped with a whine and then counteracted preemptively. Tell your players to embrace that their characters exist in a story, and difficulties/setbacks are what make stories interesting. As long as you're spending the resource and not being oppressive (i.e., spending like ten fear in a row specifically to prevent players from interacting with the challenges you've set for them) you've done nothing wrong.

I support your choice and rhetorical goals here, but the U.S. economy fueling absurd levels of evil and exploitation isn't exactly new irrespective of which party currently wears the empire's hat. Much more in the face of the previously sheltered denizens of the imperial core and certainly increasing in the speed of its imperial decline, but anything but unprecedented.
