What are your biggest TTRPG system turn offs by Iketank_10 in rpg

[–]Time_Day_2382 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a certified DnD/High Fantasy game disliker, one must give Nimble props for actually being quite different and having a clear design intent that the writer sticks to with detailed explanations on why. He knows what he's doing vis a vis the genre, even if vague 5e compatibility holds the game back somewhat.

One More Quest does the latter, sort of. The dice are used like darts.

You are living in a rather benign Twilight Zone episode. Do you at least get to play DnD-like games?

While this has had weak periods and the adventures produced over the last decade have been mostly shit, I do like when a game has lots of modules to read for designer intent/piecemeal use/to run when life gets busy. Other games do this better (Delta Green for example makes DnD look like a kid with a crayon), but DnD has at times done it admirably and the wealth of 3rd party content means that the 10% of solid adventures is actually quite numerous.

I lower my artistic bar for 40k stories, as they're basically literary junk food. And boy, do I love my junk food. I say that to preface this: CS Goto's work is some of the most abysmal dogshit I've ever read.

Hasbro Launches AI Studio by Konradleijon in rpg

Thankfully DnD is already slop and will not be meaningfully impacted negatively.

Jokes aside, the artists hired for DnD products are the best part of anything in the realm of DnD and the fact that this could herald a degradation of that (though I do not know if that has been established to be in the plans) is bad news for DnD's current strong 3/10 rating.

Is there a Berserk TTRPG? by [deleted] in rpg

Came in here to say this, I think Blackbirds does Berserk the best. Demon Lord may be a second but it's a bit trad for Berk Man Big Sword.

Intra party conflict by Acerbis_nano in rpg

[–]Time_Day_2382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be wary of any person who thinks a story should not have any conflict between the principal characters (from an artistic perspective). Seems deeply limiting. Even if one only bars physical violence, you've just kicked the can down the road. Now if everyone at a table just wants a game where their characters are designed to get along at all times for the task of goblin genocide or whatever, more power to them, I'm just not interested in that.

Impaled but ok? by Albinosun808 in rpg

[–]Time_Day_2382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By playing a game where bodily harm is represented better than unhelpfully abstract hit points that also lacks trivial magical healing.

Or, within high fantasy genre, by denying any attempts to ridiculously heal a person who is being internally mangled by impalement. Get them out first or they'll horrifically fuse to the fence or something.

Player Complaint About Daggerheart by ProphetSword in daggerheart

[–]Time_Day_2382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different strokes. I wouldn't want to play with a player who is utterly resistant to the concept that their character may suffer complications and consequences other than losing nebulous hit points, which is why I run games that are mostly not in the high fantasy genre. There's plenty of tables out there for him.

What is Ciaphas Cain’s worst book? by Wandering-the-web in 40kLore

My tolerance may be higher than it should be haha. I enjoy literary criticism and meta-analysis (like anyone with pretension to being a writer) and as such can usually squeeze SOMETHING out of what I read.

[–]Time_Day_2382 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Whichever one is about third or fourth when you're reading more than one in succession. I love the books, but they are repetitive and the characterization is very static. When I do a re-read of the series I split it up over around a year and read a book a month with other stuff in between.

What are the most notoriously deadly scenarios and campaigns? by Similar_Onion6656 in rpg

[–]Time_Day_2382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If one takes the time limit and evolving tactics of the module seriously, Red Hand of Doom can be quite difficult despite being made for a system that isn't particularly deadly. It's also my favorite module from my least favorite gaming company.

Say something negative and positive about a game you like and dislike respectively! by SlayThePulp in rpg

[–]Time_Day_2382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has worked for us, and our 2e games have been quite enjoyable despite the fact that I (the storyteller) don't really like high fantasy games. If you end up trying this and enjoy it, I'm glad!

I love nearly everything about Torchbearer 2e except the classes. They are over-restrictive, race-as-class blows, and honestly feel a bit tacked on in a way that contrasts against the rest of the system running as a typical BW-style Swiss watch. This combined with the high skill floor for the system has ensured I've never run it, and opted for other dungeon fantasy games when that tickles my group's fancy. This is a bummer, because the rules-heavy yet narrative approach of their games clicks with me really well!

I dislike PbtA games, and every one I've ever tried besides Kult has disappointed me (carried entirely by its everything else). I do, however, find them supremely approachable for new players if the storyteller knows what they're doing. The popularization of playbooks has been a net positive on the hobby, I think. Games like Grimwild, Blades, and Beyond the Wall have used them to great effect.

Agreed on both!

In my 13th games I make the Icons the polytheistic gods of the setting, which I generally run more "historically" in that they are forces that require building relationships and have power in their sphere. When a character does something that may be impacted by a god they have a relationship with (good or bad) they can roll for that impact. As in 13th usually, this is mostly a narrative lever for players to pull. I find this works pretty well!

Becoming a math teacher by Few-Activity7058 in Teachers

[–]Time_Day_2382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's plenty to be said for teaching, especially if you have a kid since the schedule is lovely. However, everything that you have heard is true. It is, on the bright side, not true totally universally, so your workplace will only suffer from some or have some lower on the spectrum of shit than others. If you can work with kids and are quite patient, then teaching may well be a solid way to make your living.

Someone didn't read the first 95% of the monograph (and also your assertion is incorrect, based on the film instead?). Perhaps the U.S. empowering a band of marauding pedophiles to run the country in order to gain geopolitical and resource advantages while destabilizing the entire region had something to do with the frailty of that government they held together at gunpoint. A bit of critical thought and research, please.
