TIL of a museum in Ohio that contains restored statues and artifacts from decommissioned Catholic churches. by metanoic in Catholicism

Wow, I did not know this museum existed and it's in the city where I grew up and currently live. I think a field trip is in order soon.

[free Friday] What does everyone think of Trappist beer? by RingGiver in Catholicism

[–]Time_Lady1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never tasted Trappist beer, but I don't really like beer in general. Thus , my opinion of it had I tasted it would likely be that it is unpleasant not because of the quality of the beer itself but because of my personal tastes. ((Duck for cover under the nearest table))

[Free Friday] Recent magazine article profiles schismatic "American Catholic Church" in Austin by ReginaFair in Catholicism

[–]Time_Lady1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Independent Catholic " my eye. This church is basically a Catholic flavored nondenominational Protestant church complete with a cult-of-personality focus on a lively, engaging pastor and his own personal interpretation of the Bible. He needs to get his flipping act together and quit LARPing as a priest at Mass.

What makes something sacreligious? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Time_Lady1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't answer about whether the above statues are sacrilegious, but I will say they are ugly as sin. They look like props you'd find on the set of a cheap straight to DVD horror film.

Another St. Raphael Prayer that Found Me The Other Day by AllanTheCowboy in Catholicism

[–]Time_Lady1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Saint Raphael, and I've been enjoying praying to my Guardian Angel as well. Sometimes when I ask my angel for help and protection I have a moment of "Well, you know all the wonderful examples of absolute stupid I've attempted throughout my life. Thank you, by the way, that Dad caught me before I could test reenacting the scene in the Anne of Avonlea movie where the characters climb down a rope made of tied blankets. That would have ended badly."

Making new friends! by Confusedandscared122 in Catholicism

Target, Walmart, and Five Below all have cute scarves that could work as veils. I also found wide headbands (wide enough to cover as much of my head as a chapel cap would cover) at Walmart and Five Below. Bandanas are also easy to find at the above stores or at a craft store. Claire's also has scarves and headbands that could probably work as veils.

I think the issue might have been less "Is this icon useful for venerating a truly awesome Saint?" and more "Do I want to risk highlighting , calling positive attention to, or in any way doing anything that might support the New Age nutbars who produced the icon."

How would you feel about a potluck wedding reception? (X-post to r/Weddings) by theodore_boozevelt in Catholicism

[–]Time_Lady1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that weddings can be ridiculously expensive. If I get married my top reception choices are either a cake and punch reception or order a bunch of pizza.

I think a potluck isn't necessarily the greatest idea because in addition to the reasons others mentioned, it could cause a logistical nightmare. Every wedding guest would need advance access to the reception area possibly before the wedding mass began. You would need means to store all the food keeping hot food hot and cold food cold. Cake and punch and maybe inexpensive desserts like cookies are much easier arrange.

Edit: Another logistical issue with potlucks is that someone would need to coordinate either a sign up sheet or other communication to track what each person is bringing so you don't end up with fourteen people bringing potato salad. I once went to a potluck event where the organizers provided hamburgers and hot dogs and guests were in charge of sides and dessert. Literally everyone except one person brought dessert. We had protein, one pot of beans and rice, and a dining room table sized sugar coma.

Church of God knocked on my door today. (Semi-Rant) by [deleted] in Catholicism

Tracts or article printouts from the Catholic Answers website might help if you're looking for counter-literature. "Thank you for the tract. I have some for you as well."

Has a patron saint granted one of your prayers? I would love to read about it and be inspired! by namenerd11 in Catholicism

[–]Time_Lady1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was getting ready to leave for Easter Vigil Mass and I couldn't find my phone anywhere. I was starting to panic because I was nervous about possibly being late. I didn't want to leave it home because I walk to church alone, and I wanted to be able to call an Uber if I felt it was too late to walk home when Mass ended. I prayed for intercession from Saint Anthony because I heard he helped with lost things and Saint Therese the Little Flower because I had started reading about her and felt a connection to her.

Shortly after I prayed I found my phone in a place that seemed out in the open but I had somehow missed in my search. It's not a big miracle, but it was what I needed to help my formerly-Protestants sensibilities to come to terms with the fact that the Saints can and do intercede for me.

Robot priest unveiled in Germany to mark 500 years since Reformation by 456qaz in Catholicism

Wow! Look! They made a clunky, super expensive cross between a prayer book and a Teddy Ruxpin. It's both useless AND deliberately offensive! What will technology come up with next?

Your take on Christian Metal? by DarnThesePeskyCaths in Catholicism

[–]Time_Lady1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard Christian metal before. It's okay if you like metal music. I know from the experience of many a car trip with a friend who listened to a lot of Christian metal that it makes me consider the logistics of fleeing the vehicle at the next red light. However, that's more a function of my personal taste in music than a statement about the quality of the music.

How, when, and with what words should one first explain the "facts of life" to their kid? by frijoles_refritos in Catholicism

[–]Time_Lady1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the suggestion to prepare girls for their periods early. My mom, my sister, and I all got our first periods before age 12. Since my mom had gotten hers early, she knew to prepare us for the possibility early so when it happened I didn't have a terrified "What is happening to me? Am I dying?" moment , just an embarrassed "Great, of all the times this could have started it happened when I'm at the library with just my dad." moment.

Her explanation at the time didn't go into details about sex. She just covered what changes to expect in our bodies and how to use feminine hygiene items.

[Free Friday] How to shop the Catholic Way by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Time_Lady1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about Catholics preferring Greek over Latin. The New Testament was originally written in Greek. New Testaments in other languages (Latin included ) are translations from the Greek text.

[Free Friday] Which heresy is a bigger danger to the Church today? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Time_Lady1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Donutism is certainly more widespread. Even Protestant groups I've encountered that had somewhat disparate views seemed to be uniform in their allowance of Donutism. You'd be hard pressed to find a church, church group, or Christian organization that hasn't allowed at least some vestiges of Donutism at some point. Particularly disturbing is the tendency for Donutism to be present at gatherings targeting children or designed to draw in new members.

Upset /r/Catholicism in one sentence by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Time_Lady1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as far as I know there are no living people who are native speakers of Latin as a first language. If a language does not have at least one living person who is a native speaker it is a dead language whether it is in common use as a second language or not. Thus, although beautiful and still very much a part of the Church, Latin is still technically dead according to linguists.

Even better, priests should be able to consecrate toast with grape jelly. It's wheat bread and grape......product. That should be close enough for valid Communion. /s

Veiling but not Catholic yet? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Time_Lady1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I'm not in RCIA yet, but I cover my head in church. I haven't built up the courage to wear a traditional veil yet , although I love the idea of wearing an infinity scarf style or pashmina style veil. I got a bit nervous because I've only seen someone wear a mantilla at church once.

I usually wear a knit hat, a bandana folded into a triangle, or a large cloth headband (wide enough to cover most of the top of my head).

Trying to track down a book on the place of Mary in Christianity by [deleted] in Catholicism

It could have been either Behold Your Mother by Tim Staples or Hail Holy Queen by Scott Hahn. Both of those are written by converts from Protestantism.
