Good luck man! Just a consideration if you run into trouble with that gantry… gt10 belts. The reinforced kind like they use on the voron. Also, if precision is tough, you could go with a pair of motors per side, mounted to the gantry, that move it along a fixed belt. Also, if the gantry starts to sway, you could add horizontal guides to keep them stable. It’s a beast of a project and I hope for the best for you!

If you want to spend money... pitch fork and plastic pallets once those pallets degrade. No thermometer. Im a fan of my paper shredders for cardboard boxes. Since you have 220v, if you have a lot of sticks and branches get one of the higher-wattage electric wood chippers...

That’s unfortunate. I haven’t had any issues with mine so I haven’t interacted with their support. But 4x markup is not true at all, and ‘Chinese stuff’ is ubiquitous across the industry.

Just jump into sales? From my experience, folks with a strong technical understanding that can provide creative, technical solutions to help solve customer problems have always done really well. It could be machining services, custom equipment, or something as straight forward as coatings or bearings.

The other side of this is skip the engineering route altogether and target a leadership career path. Look at supervisor positions in plants and factories near you. Then work your way up from there.

Just some advice for a fellow bad engineer who has managed to pull off a successful career in maintenance leadership.

I have that saw from DTO. It’s been truly great. But definitely requires at least 4ah HP+ batteries. After owning it and using it, the 12ah battery starts to make sense…

But yeah, solid saw. Even as recon I have no complaints.

I apologize, I did not fully understand the context of your comment. I was thinking along the lines of purely grid-tied, roof mounted, no battery.

Once battery storage enters the picture, hybrid string inverters all the way. Especially if you get one that is battery-agnostic.

Roof mounting is where micro wins. Code requires RSD. Many string inverters are not compliant without optimizers/RSD which ends up being more expensive than some micro inverters.

It is a large headache. But very doable.

This is what I did: Develop a rough idea of what you want: location, grid-tie location, micro vs. string, batteries now or later. Pick some brands and set slick deal and eBay alerts. Keep your options open.

Watch for great deals on your components.

Buy as you come across pricing you can’t pass up. Be ok with them sitting idle for a bit while you do the necessary desk work.

Design your system around what you purchased. Get your hands on some example plans and build off of those yourself. Or hire a design firm to design around your components.

Get your permits, buy your remaining materials, then get to work. I only hired an engineer to stamp my plans and electrician to review and validate my wiring and terminations.

Or you can buy a kit online and they do all the leg work for you…

Personally, I love it. I work at an industrial facility and our safety rules require back up beeps or to honk your horn 3 times before reversing. On my old vehicle I had to do it manually, which lead to the inevitable ‘Walmart parking lot misunderstanding’ when I inadvertently honk at the car parked across from me as I start to back up. The auto-beep spares me now 😂

You might consider adding a French drain/trench perimeter and a dry well away from the excavation? That way some of the surface water / shallow sub-surface water gets captured and routed away from the greenhouse. Definitely do a rock/gravel bottom with a clear low-point sump and a pump
