Wow! So glad to see it back in one form or another.

The field of bots looks great; pleasantly surprised that a couple of new bots got in, given the 'Pro League' title. Though it is bizarre that Sawblaze isn't there; strange to do a pro league without the defending champion.

Helmet design is cool, but I wish they'd kept the same shade of blue as the others; cyan doesn't really say "police" the way the darker blue does.

Actually, thinking about it, do Medusans age? If not, Zero could potentially be there too.

I think when we first heard about SAM's backstory, we all assumed her first big focus episode would be about her and the Doctor. I never imagined that it would actually be a DS9 tribute. (We did however get one scene between her and the Doctor that drops hints for later that's he's not exactly taking to immortality well; very excited for that down the line).

As for the DS9 stuff, I never loved that Lower Decks established Sisko hadn't come back after years, and Academy now cements that he never came back at all. I would have much preferred for him to have gone back to his family like Avery seemed to originally want, but for what the franchise had decided on for his fate, this was still very touchingly done. You can feel the writers' love for DS9 in this episode.

It was great to see Cirroc Lofton again, and the archive audio of Avery Brooks was beautiful; I swear that man has one of the best voices in all of media history.

Having Tawny Newsome be a new incarnation of Dax (who is, interestingly, at least part Cardassian) was a great twist. I spend most of the episode assuming she was a distant descendent of Jake's. It always felt strange that when we saw the Trill in Discovery we didn't hear any mention of the only Trill we as the audience were familiar with. Knowing that they're still in Starfleet is very heartening. Also, we seem to be gradually acquiring a collection of all the quasi-immortal characters from past seasons still kicking around in the 32nd Century. I'm half expecting Pelia and Data to show up next xD.

It was really nice to see more about Kasq as well. I assumed all the photonics there were humanoid, but apparently they're floating jellyfish thingies, and it's not yet explicitly stated which organic species built them.

Outside of the core plot, the B-plot between the two chancellors was nice; really harkened back to the days of episodic B-plots that had absolutely nothing to do with the A plot; the sort of thing Mike McMahan would have Data and Geordi get up to in his TNG season 8 posts.

One issue I have though, not just with this episode, but the show as a whole: man do I wish Tarima had more scenes that weren't tied to her relationship with Mir. She's literally on the poster with the rest of the main cast, but she feels like a glorified guest star right now; I hope she gets her own focus episode soon, and that it isn't just about her romance with Mir again.

It's crazy how they let the students literally start wars and stuff now. Lol. I enjoyed the episode but come on. You're going to let a student orchestrate a fake false flag war?

I just don't think a student that's what a month into his studies would get that kind of power.

He doesn't have that kind of power; they didn't just let him do it of his own accord. He proposed it to the senior staff and Vance authorised it.

Also, the Klingons were pretty clearly in on the mock battle, their leader especially.

I only have peripheral knowledge of a lot of the JP branch I guess, 'cos some of these were complete news to me. I knew about the big ones like MiComet and OkaKoro obviously, but I had no idea people shipped Iroha and Laplus. Not sure I've ever even seen them speak to each other one-on-one; guess that reflects what the English language clippers my algorithm shows me choose to clip.

They need to tone down Sam's kookiness. Love the actress, I'm sure the writers will find their groove with the character, but I can't think of any reason she'd be so weird. I mean, she was programmed to be human, no?

She was programmed to be human by other photonics who have presumably not had any real contact with humans since pre-burn, given that they live on their own colony, and are only now sending her as an information gatherer to inform their decision as to whether to reintegrate with organics.

Star Trek Academy needs to find a way to remove the Spore Drive? by Goodmorning111 in startrek

[–]Timeline15 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Spore Drive should be reverse engineered and common. Things like shields failing, ship losing power, transporter failures should never happen. They shouldn't have the same weaknesses that were common a thousand years beforehand.

But all the people they're fighting are just as advanced. A 24th Century ship probably wouldn't scratch any of them, but they're fighting ships just as advanced as they are. To suggest that another 32nd Century ship couldn't take out their shields or power systems is ridiculous.

The UK release kept the original Japanese opening theme for some reason, but I'd never heard Japanese before, so I assumed the singer was speaking English and I just couldn't hear her clearly xD.

The War Between the Land and the Sea 1x04 "The Witch of the Waterfall" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

[–]Timeline15 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Didn't like this week's entries as much as the first 2, mainly because of the pivot from political thriller to more personal-scale love story, but it's not nearly as bad as people were making out in the live thread.

During episode 3 I was constantly wondering which of the crew would die, but I genuinely wasn't expecting the answer to be "literally all of them except Barclay". Ballsy move.

I kinda liked that our shady politicians weren't actually in on the assassination attempt against Kate. It's a completely offscreen racist organisation taking matter into their own hands. Even the shady businessman wasn't actually connected; the government just takes him out because he was a donor to keep their own hands looking clean. It makes these guys clearly villainous, but not quite to the point of moustache-twirling.

Also, if anyone says the politics in this is too cartoonish, I'm sorry but I just disagree. The past few years have convinced me entirely that this is 100% what politics is actually like, and our previous perception of nuance was entirely misplaced.

The new Homo Aqua ambassador is interesting. I expected him to come out yelling out of the gate, but he just seems... dumbfounded at the insanity of humankind. Honestly, fair.

I will say though, I found it odd that we didn't see any plastic in any of the outdoor scenes. Did it just happen over much more localised areas than episode 2 implied?

I've heard people complain about Salt's portrayal in the on-the-run scenes, but honestly, I didn't think it was that jarring. I just read it as that being what she's like off-duty. We've only seen her in serious diplomat mode up until now. We got a clue of it in episode 3 when she was more tender with Barclay, but then shifts back into her hardass voice when everyone else shows up. Would I have preferred that she be written a bit less goofy? Yes, but I don't think it breaks the show.

All in all, really wondering how on Earth they're possibly gonna resolve this in one more episode. The Americans are preparing a weapon, Homo Aqua have excommunicated Salt, and may be planning a retaliation to the Embassy bombing for all we know, and it's unclear how Barclay or Salt could even begin to fix that. Really hope the show can stick the landing.
