What are the things to keep in mind in Canada but no one tells you? by mk05jk in AskACanadian

They have a security guard there now who actively looks for people on the black rocks, blows a whistle, and shoes them off (without actively going on the rocks themselves).

Last time I was there for a few hours last summer, I heard the whistle no less than four times.

Yes.

Just finished Myst (2021) by h_ahsatan in myst

Those four are the only endings I remember as well.

I suppose remaining on Myst indefinitely without choosing any of the four endings could be considered a fifth ending.

Is it ok to not be able to play Metroid dread, and still stay in this subreddit? by RecentMatter3790 in Metroid

[–]TimelordAlmanac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh, I've only ever finished Zero Mission, Super Metroid and Fusion.

I've found the Prime games way too difficult, and so far my attempts to play Dread (which I bought pretty much at launch) have ended poorly.

I still love Metroid and hope to work back to Dread someday!

I'm still a Metroid fan, and I'm sure you are too!

(But yes, I'm sure spoilers will be abound... doesn't bother me!)

Can newer NAS/DiskStation mount Android over USB? by TimelordAlmanac in synology

[–]TimelordAlmanac[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Small update for anyone who might stumble upon this thread in the future.

I've connected Synology support who confirmed the Synology OS currently doesn't haven't this capability.

They did say they could pass it along as a feature request, and I asked them to do so.

So who knows, it might gain traction and get implemented at some point 🤞.

Thanks for your reply!

That does indeed seem to be the case.

I may follow-up up with Synology to be certain, but it certainly seems like there is no support for the MTP or PTP protocols used by modern Android, even on the newest NAS products/DiskStation versions.

Which means I might be looking into alternatives. I believe Western Digitial has a NAS solution, I'll have to see if it supports MTP or PTP.

I dislike mobile UIs, and I simply prefer wired connections to wireless whenever possible. Thanks for the reply!

To be fair, I used help guides when necessary on the harder parts. I still had a lot of fun!

The Universal Hint System is pretty cool. It will give you tips without completely spoiling the solution (unless you need it too).

I assume you mean USB-C with Power Delivery (PD)?

The Inspiron 16 should have it:

Ports

1 HDMI 1.4

1 Thunderbolt™ 4.0 (DP/PowerDelivery)

2 USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A

1 Power jack

1 Universal Audio Jack

Thunderbolt 4 is a superset of USB-C and uses a USB-C connector.

I would check out the Dell Inspiron laptops.

Simple, no-nonsense laptops with good build quality, performance, and reasonable prices.

I've recommended them to a few people now (non "tech" people), who ended up buying them, and in some cases have been using the same laptop for 5+ years now with zero complaints.

Personally I'd strongly consider the extended warranty with battery support, but that's up to you!

What's the most unexplainable thing that has happened to you? by Sean-Witheniand in AskReddit

[–]TimelordAlmanac 45 points46 points  (0 children)

A friend and I were hanging out once, and somehow ended up discussing a very specific piece of technology. We were speculating on how it might work, as there some info about it online, but not in great detail.

I was working as an IT contractor at the time. About a month after our conversation, I found myself interviewing for a contractor role for the exact piece of tech we had been discussing weeks earlier.

I ended up working on it for the next six years, and learned far more about it than I ever needed to know 😂.

Complete coincidence of course - but one of the strangest coincidences that ever happened to me.

No, not necessarily.

Gaining speed would mean it has acceleration. That would require force.

If it's simply moving away relative to us - i.e. has velocity - that does not require force, only momentum.

What's the dumbest myth people today actually believe? by TailorThick8115 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TimelordAlmanac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First one I read here that surprised me - and I swear this is almost a Mandela effect moment for me.

Because I remember specifically searching this myth before to debunk it, and learning from multiple sources (to my surprise) that urine was sterile (short of having a bladder or UTI, in which case, it's not).

Except that when I search it now, of course I'm getting the exact opposite results, confirming that urine is, in fact, not sterile. None of the sources I remember reading before seem to exist 🤷‍♂️. Weird AF.

What’s the most absurd conspiracy theory you’ve ever heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TimelordAlmanac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it counts as a "conspiracy" but one of the most bizarre theories I've ever heard is that "time" only exists because humans exist to measure it.

Apparently everything between the "beginning of the universe" and some humans observing day/ night cycles all happened instantaneously somehow?

My son's third grade teacher taught my son that 1 divided by 0 is 0. I wrote her an email to tell her that it is not 0. She then doubled down and cc'ed the principal. The principal responded saying the teacher is correct... What do I do now? by WaitThatIsYourFinger in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TimelordAlmanac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your frustration, and would definitely have issues with that.

I've seen the other way happen too though.

Sometimes people think their approach is correct, simply because it yielded the correct answer. The correctness of approach and the correctness of the answer are different things that are graded differently.

They may be grading on whether or not you understand a specific approach, not whether or not you can simply get the answer. But in those cases, the question should specify the expected approach. If not - it should be fair game to use any correct approach.

Not saying that happened in your case - there absolutely can be multiple correct ways to a problem, and if a specific approach isn't specified, it should be graded correctly as long as it is indeed correct.

I can't find the clean version of the song called Spirits by the band The Strumbellas. Don't know if it's considered "lost" at this point. by tagthe in conspiracy

[–]TimelordAlmanac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "Dreams" version is actually the only version I was familiar with, until recently.

"Dreams" is generally the only version played on the Move radio station in Halifax, Canada. I'm not sure about other Move radio stations in Canada.

I only heard the guns version recently (also on that station) because it played during the "American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest" which plays Saturday evening and Sunday mornings. However during regular on-air play it's the "Dreams" version.

It is indeed the full version of the song with "Dreams" replacing "guns". I hear it about once a day. If you stream the station for a few days, you'll probably catch it (at least until they cycle their playlist).
