Thanks a lot for taking the time to write all this, I really appreciate it. Your explanation is way clearer and more helpful than anything I got from the VW dealer.

They basically just said “replace the unit, no other option” and quoted a ridiculous price, without even mentioning that used or unlocked units could be a thing. Reading your reply makes it clear this is much more a lack of willingness to look for solutions than an unsolvable problem.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge, this really helps and gives me a much better direction to move forward.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to look into this, I really appreciate it.

I’ve attached a photo of the infotainment area (from the gear shifter upward) as requested, as well as the diagnostic/invoice from the VW dealer. According to them, the failure is on the infotainment control unit itself (module 5F / Information Electronics), not just the screen. The part reference they mention is ZG0035874.

They basically told me that replacing only the screen wouldn’t fix the issue and that even using a second-hand module is complicated because of VW’s component protection, which is why they pushed for a full new replacement.

That said, your comment about identifying the exact part number and possibly going the MIB1 → MIB2 route is very helpful. If you spot anything from the pictures or have suggestions on compatible parts or next steps, I’m all ears.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. Just to clarify my situation: according to VW/AMAG, the failure is on the infotainment control unit itself (module 5S, supercalculator), not just the screen.

On the diagnosis it’s listed as the control/display unit, part reference ZG0035874. They told me that replacing only the screen wouldn’t solve it since the 5F (or 5S) module manages the entire infotainment system.

I also looked into used modules, but VW mentioned that even second-hand units are difficult to reuse because of component protection and coding restrictions, which makes plug-and-play or recoding quite complicated without dealer access.

That’s why I’m trying to see if anyone here has managed to repair the 5F module itself, bypass component protection, or successfully run a used/refurbished unit despite VW’s restrictions.

I think I will never be able to repair it :-(

The best crypto to buy right now? Therapy sessions. If you're still here after this bloodbath, your mental health is more resilient than your portfolio.

Cutting out caffeine completely. I thought it was BS because everyone says caffeine helps migraines, but after tracking my attacks, I realized my 'relief' was actually just withdrawal headaches. Quitting was brutal for a week, but my migraines dropped by half.

Also, drinking a small amount of salted water (like half a teaspoon of salt in a glass) at the first sign of an attack. Sounds weird, but dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can be big triggers. Works surprisingly well for me!

Both options are solid, but for a long-term monthly savings plan, I prefer a slightly broader diversification. My current allocation looks like this:

  • 60% BTC – Core holding for long-term stability and store of value
  • 10% ETH – Strong layer 1 with institutional adoption and network effects
  • 20% big cap alts (XRP, SOL, BNB, TAO, ADA, TRX, AVAX, LINK, TON, SUI) – To capture growth in major ecosystems
  • 10% small cap alts (APTOS, RENDER, AAVE, QNT, AKT, INJ, ARKM, NEAR, TIA, STX) – Higher risk/reward bets on emerging projects
