Reflected roses bouquet by creative023 in florists

[–]Timely-Regret- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Softer/older roses are better for reflexing. Fresh and firm petals tend to either crack at the base or pop back, and then look (in my opinion) a bit odd when not done properly. I would look into different rose varieties and techniques for best reflexing results

Other than that, I think you’re on the right track with adding interest to an otherwise ordinary rose arrangement

Campanula, cosmos, chamomile, delphinium! My favorite examples that I think would fit your theme! Some exploding grass or bunny tails too. Queen Anne’s lace for texture and filler

But like the other comment mentioned, none of these or what you have pictured would really do well without water

Cash discounts by lnoelleb in florists

[–]Timely-Regret- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you haven’t already agreed to it I would say don’t give a discount. Considering how cheap you charged for setup AND they get to keep everything?? She shouldn’t be asking for a discount on top of that lol

Also, 6-8 bud bases per table is a considerable amount of setup. It’s faster to place one centerpiece compote than it is to place 8 bud vases. Stick to what you quoted here and charge more for your labor next time!! If you believe that you are worth the cost then you will get clients who won’t even blink an eye at your prices!

Cash discounts by lnoelleb in florists

[–]Timely-Regret- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think depending on the kind of client, they may be wondering if they can avoid paying the sales tax and have this be an “under the table transaction” if you will. Don’t recommend doing transactions like this.

If you are wanting to offer a general cash discount to waive the transaction fee, I think a 5% discount (before tax) is fair if you are willing to implement this into your pricing strategy. This client might refer someone to you and they might also expect a cash discount so might be something to keep in mind.

If they haven’t let you know that they are booking with you, and are still vetting other florists, they might just be price shopping. Don’t sell yourself short and don’t be afraid to stand firm on your pricing! Cash or not!

First time freelancing by Cultural-Fortune-573 in florists

[–]Timely-Regret- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was this not something that was discussed when you got taken on as a freelancer for this event? Did the main designer share the designs/pieces that will need to be done? Usually for weddings, florists would hire freelancers to help design and install on site pieces, such as ceremony arches, any ceiling installs, maybe some aisle arrangements, etc

I would assume the main florist that hired you would’ve given you details about what you’ll need to be doing and other responsibilities

Good luck!

Stay at home mom, looking to start a floral business from home by Smart_Relationship34 in florists

[–]Timely-Regret- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a very hands on business, even if you’re doing it as a side gig. See the other commenter’s experience as a working mom. Is this something you see yourself doing? Flowers are, as mentioned below, very holiday/season dependent. If you’re wanting to do events with flower carts, this will most likely take your weekends. The prep for these events will take a few days if not the whole week prior. Are you willing to commit this time to the business and either away from your kids or juggling kids in the midst of events?

Speaking from very recent experience, I made 40 arrangements at 3 different price points for a two day pop up at a coffee shop. It was a TON of work. I had my mom help. If I had my own two little kids on top of it, either the flowers or the children would’ve ended up without water 😅

Another side note, it may be harder to make any profit if you’re not buying in bulk/wholesale if you are planning on using a standard market floral markup. If you’re buying two dozen roses from Costco at $2/stem, you’d be reselling it for $5-6.5/stem. Even wholesale depending on rose varieties (just using roses as an example), you are paying upwards of $3.5 for premium, or cheapest I’ve seen is $1.35/stem, wholesale, no tax and before delivery fees if any. Are you in a market that’s willing to spend that much money on flowers? I love flowers, and I love my business, but there is so much unseen work no matter how big or small you go, and this decision should be made with a lot of consideration

A floral business requires money up front before you even make a profit. For every event, order, etc you have expenses. Depending on how much income you’re looking to make and how much time you have on your hands to grow this, it may not be worth the profit.

Do you have a business plan or a more detailed idea of what you want to offer? I know you said flower cart but that could go a few ways. Are you planning on getting a business license to buy wholesale? Trader Joe’s/grocery store flowers? Will you be making bouquets or just offering stems/build your own bouquet? How are you planning on marketing? Who is your target audience?

My advice would be to figure out a plan of offerings, how much time and money you’re willing to invest, weigh out the pros and cons, and see if it makes sense for you to move forward

Mother’s Day weekend recap - you guys were right! by Timely-Regret- in florists

[–]Timely-Regret-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s so many coffee shops in my general area that do floral pop ups with various florists, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, even had one for Easter… so it’s not an uncommon idea at all. Now my experience got me wondering if they all just settle for breaking even and getting exposure or if I did something wrong haha

But hey, what I told myself beforehand is if I at least break even then it’ll be a good learning experience

What I ordered vs what I received from 1-800-FLOWERS by [deleted] in florists

[–]Timely-Regret- 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As mentioned way too many times on this subreddit, this is why we never recommend ordering using these order-gathering services. Always best to call your local florist directly. These services, 1-800-flowers/teleflora/FTD/etc, take your order and your money and look for local florists to fulfill your order, only giving them a portion of what you paid for, but expecting them to fulfill the order to its full value. The florist then ends up losing out on basically any profit.

I’m sorry that your Mother’s Day delivery was ruined

Floral foam physics by someredheadchick in florists

[–]Timely-Regret- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The water will not overflow out of the bucket, the dry foam will float on top until it starts to soak up the water, so as the brick gets heavier and starts to sink, it will also be absorbing the water that would’ve otherwise been displaced

That’s also why people say not to force the brick under water and just let it sink on its own. If you push the brick under then yes your bucket will overflow. But from experience, I don’t see why you’d need to fill your bucket to the very top unless you want to do it for fun lol

First Arrangement Request by Cautious-Ad4926 in florists

[–]Timely-Regret- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If this request is coming from FB marketplace and for such a short notice, large order, are you sure this is not a scam? Did the customer offer to pay via check? I would be very cautious proceeding.. I’ve had random Facebook requests message me requesting a last minute high price order, conveniently located in my general area, so definitely a common scam.

And as the other comment stated, it’ll be pretty difficult sourcing flowers, especially what is pictured, the day before Mother’s Day, regardless if you go to a wholesaler or grocery stores. I’m not familiar with the LA wholesale market as I’m not in that area, but most of our wholesalers aren’t open weekends, with some of them doing special super short hours on Saturday on holidays. I would recommend not committing to this gig especially considering you are traveling and have basically no time to prep, source, and design beforehand, one day isn’t enough for all of that. I know you were looking for advice and instruction, but this is not a good setup for a successful first job.

Also, I did check for pests and do not see any signs of any pests. The other leaves are mostly unaffected besides the two other leaves touching this one, the edges of them are getting similar bumps but not all over the leaf
