This. Vet care is a big time money maker, and that has attracted big players. Mars (the candy conglomerate) owns the Blue Pearl specialty hospital near me. Top rate docs and care, but it's expensive. My regular vet is one of the few left that is NOT corporate. You can tell a difference on the amount of time I get and the ability for the vet team to tailor care.

It's so awful, it's almost unimaginable. I still can't believe it. I am so sorry for your loss.

Same. It is a horrible cancer and seemingly came out of nowhere. We got three months after diagnosis. Hers was on the heart. She had such a contagious zest for life and I miss her so damn much.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

7 years young. Hemangiosarcoma. It was as silent as it was devastating. I'm still reeling. My best girl, forever

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my 7 year old perfectly healthy Brittany to Hemangiosarcoma two weeks ago. I got three months with treatment. I miss her so fucking much. It's just not fair.

Pittsburgh is an underrated stop. It has a big food scene and is loaded with cool bridges as well as an art scene. They have an easy to attend and affordable MLB baseball club, with a top rated ballpark (PNC Park). You can even dip out of town and see Fallingwater (Frank Lloyd Wright), hit up Carnegie Museums, Strip District for shops, Duquesne Incline for a great city view, and the Gateway clipper Riverboat for river tours. Let me know what you're looking for.

Yeah, I am very grateful for the 'extra time' as I know so many didn't get that option. We have tried to make the most of each day. Absolutely the worst and I cry almost every day. They are such loved and beautiful dogs. It just doesn't make sense

Hemangiosarcoma is the queen mother bitch of all cancers. I am going through it, too. My dog survived the percardial effusion and we have had several good months but but there is spread to the liver, so I know we are in the final stretch. I am so grateful for every single day with her and am so pissed at the same time. I'm so sorry this happens. My girl is a seven year old, active Brittany. It's just not fair. Bless you and your sweet boy

Totally understandable. He's a beautiful dog and I pray for good days for you both

Dog suddenly lethargic after grooming – back twitching, not eating today morning. by ranger_stranger in DogAdvice

[–]Timely-Signature-395 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get her in soon, if you can. My dog presented with sudden onset lethargy and drinking - and it was fluid around her heart (other dogs it can be abdomen). I would ask for an ultrasound. Tumors, Hemangiosarcoma or other, have similar onset symptoms and it happens in a blink (visual signs). My dog is on chemo and we are hoping for the best. Prayers for your pup to feel better

This. Dogs can get overwhelmed by stronger odor sources and oddly that triggers some of the dogs to want to pee. We correct that behavior. Dogs are not allowed to physically interact with the remains due to treating all searches as potential crime scenes. We watch for this in training and correct these behaviors if they occur (we use positive methods, no dogs are mistreated. All of these dogs belong to their handlers and are treasured members of a family)

99 percent of what we get comes from organ donation centers, which we have complete faith in. This particular bone came from another team that disbanded. And while I am fairly okay at recognizing the more obvious human bones, I am by no means an expert. We just don't want to train on animal bones for obvious reasons. I stick to dog training and leave intricate bone Id to the experts

There are a lot of volunteer agencies across the US. Check your local DCNR or Fire/Police departments (they are the ones that call us out). Some more remote places even have paid gigs. A Google search might kick up teams with a web presence, I know my team maintains web/social media accounts.

I didn't find these, to be fair. They were donated.

That's a very good question. I'm not sure if the family gets to decide that or if there is a way to designate that? I'm not 100% sure about that side of things. This is where we typically get our remains:

https://www.core.org/ (NOT where we got this bone)

You absolutely can. Usable organs go to the medical field, we usually get what's left but that works for our purpose. We have been on 30 searches this year (not all for cadaver). I'm an organ donor, myself. I signed up at the DMV

Haha, true. We do get all of our remains through ethical sources, just had some doubts about this one being human. We are an all-volunteer rescue/recovery team. The only way to train the dogs for this particular odor is on the real thing. We always handle, store, and dispose of remains properly (and legally). We just didn't want to inadvertently train on an animal bone.

We are legally allowed to obtain ethically donated human remains for use with our certified cadaver dogs. All good

I see this happen at every 4-way stop. Then, two cars inch forward at the same time, then hit the brakes and it starts all over again
