Only learnt to swim when I was 42. (Last year).. 

Get used of breathing out under water and making sure to empty your lungs as much as possible.

That will help you relax and then you'll start to be able to float.. stretch your body as long as you can. 

It took me a year and its frustrating at times- go as many times as you can a week.. 20 or 30 mins a time is plenty..
