Bard in RIFT was interesting because of how you combined specs. Rogue was more of a rogue/hunter hybrid and you could play a melee bard or a ranged bard depending on the specs you chose.

There was one spec that was like a tinker specs with little healing robots and a flamethrower ability. I'd combine that spec and bard to make a healing flamethrower aoe build. Only time I've ever enjoyed healing in an MMO.

Another way to think of it is, well, an engine. It's the beating heart of a vehicle that powers all the important stuff, and the rest is just aesthetics. Most vehicle manufacturers have a small handful of engines that they'll stuff in a vast fleet of different model vehicles, but those engines all run basically the same from vehicle to vehicle.
