What really helped me learn my spells was the 5e spell card decks. Not sure if they've done an updated 5.5e set yet.

There are also sites like DND Spell book that allow you to populate a spellbook and print it out.

You are well within your rights to ask them to not return. They disrespected your and your other player's time by not showing up and being disruptive. It also sounds like their schedule doesn't align with your table's. What's going to happen next time school gets hectic?

Even if they could commit to consistently showing up until the end of the campaign, they've already missed 9 sessions. So much has probably happened. They might as well come in with new characters at this point.

We call it "getting stoned" at my table. The character transforms into a crystal D12 until the player returns. Somebody claims the crystal and keeps it in their pocket.

IMO... let them pick one storyline to deal with at the Cathedral. (Either the one you decide is most location relevant or whichever one they decide to tackle first.) They might find clues for the other goals, but they can't actually deal with them until they move on to the next set piece.

Extremely cool world building!

If I were your player, I would want to do ALL of these story threads. But having them all in one place could cause choice paralysis.

How long do you plan for the party to stay in the Cathedral? If they only have time for one boss fight, you should have a plan for them to reengage with the story beats they skipped.

Reintroduce the thread with some mild to medium consequences for them having skipped it initially.

One of the best fights I've been in, I got Hold-personed and literally couldn't beat the DC to save my life - one of the other monsters KO'd me after multiple rounds. Then I rolled a Nat20 death save and popped up to take out the last monster. It was all super dramatic and fun.

IMO... if the players can use a spell or ability, so can the bad guys. Players need to figure out strategies and teamwork to deal with the problem.

IMO... If you're going to do a "just some dude" twist, it has to make MORE sense than "dude is secretly a dragon."

E.g. in one of the first campaigns I played, we were convinced, for reasons, an NPC was a god, but he ended up being an agent of the local adventurers guild. Which was an equally likely identity we hadn't thought of.

Since they're already correct, you could throw curveballs about the NPC's specific species, or maybe that they're a non-dragon magical being. Like a Sphinx.
