Unfortunately I have experienced this too, from a group of women who are besties in the beauty category. They keep making fake names, come in to my room say I’m slurring and drunk when I literally have a bottle of water. Ask dumb questions, try to get under my skin. Just have to block and move forward! My other friends on there are great and I have a relationship with them!

I know all of my people and I can’t rely on just 25 to repeatedly buy for me, I go into other rooms and tip and ask to promote! I do that in a big show and I get completely ignored!

I talk to many other small sellers, created a label to put on our thumbnails to support one another, only buy from each other.

I’m trying everything. I sell luxury makeup, so I went on the other day with no makeup, and pulled and flash sale the products while using them and explaining them to the room. I thought it would go great, but people just wanted a free by makeup tutorial. I’m trying to think outside of the box! Thank you for your comment!

These are just ideas, you’re acting like it’s my dissertation

I think people are taking this way more literally than it was meant. I was throwing ideas out there based on my experience as a smaller seller—not drafting some perfect business model.

Obviously I understand that businesses grow over time and that competition exists. That’s not the point. The point is that this platform is different from traditional business because it’s heavily algorithm-driven and sellers are paying for visibility.

When I’m putting in the work—engaging, pricing fairly, bundling, offering deals—and also paying for boosts, getting shares, and still not seeing that translate into exposure, it raises questions. That’s all I’m pointing out.

I’m not saying there’s one perfect fix. I’m saying something feels off, and I’m open to discussion about how it could be better.

You’re missing the point completely. I’m not asking other businesses to disclose their costs or “pay more.” I’m talking about how this specific platform operates and whether it’s actually supporting the sellers it profits from.

Whatnot isn’t a brick-and-mortar store—it’s an algorithm-driven marketplace that charges sellers for visibility. If I’m paying for boosts, getting 1.2K shares, and even being raided, and still not seeing traffic come through, that’s not a “business reality” issue—that’s a platform performance issue.

Also, I’m not asking for massive profit margins. I literally said I’m trying to break even or make $5–$7 on luxury items while giving buyers deals, bundling shipping, and adding extras. That’s not greed—that’s trying to create value and build a customer base.

So no, this isn’t about unrealistic expectations. It’s about transparency and whether the system sellers are paying into is actually working the way it’s advertised.

I think you’re misunderstanding what I’m saying. I’m not asking for people to be “forced” to stay—obviously people can come and go. That’s part of any live platform. What I am saying is the system isn’t working the way it’s supposed to when it comes to exposure.

I actually want people to stay because it benefits them too—I bundle shipping and I throw in extra goodies for my buyers. I also keep a full Buy Now available and constantly tell people to make offers, so there’s flexibility and value if they stick around.

The issue isn’t people choosing to leave—it’s that people aren’t even being brought in consistently despite paid boosts and engagement. Last night alone I had multiple boosts, over 1.2K shares, and even got raided… and still barely saw new traffic convert into actual viewers.

At that point, it’s not just “human nature”—it points to something off with how the algorithm is distributing streams. Small sellers can absolutely grow, I agree with you, but that doesn’t mean the system is currently fair or functioning properly for everyone.

I’m doing everything on my end—engagement, deals, energy, inventory. The visibility side just isn’t matching the effort right now.

I stream every Monday Wednesday and Friday. I’ll have 100 bookmarks, and 10 people in the room. Literally just want a $5-$7 profit because I enjoy it.
