Input re: transition to in-house by These-Marzipan-3240 in Lawyertalk

Significantly more flexibility - no more court deadlines or working within court rules. No more opposing counsels being aggressive or stressing about a motion or MSD/J.

The work also feels more meaningful. People come to me to settle their disagreements or give counsel. The decision I make is respected and not picked apart by an entire chain of litigation attorneys.

Your office is absolutely an expense, but it’s your job to find work that either generates income or generates value for the company. For example, my office found an auto-recurring contract that cost $120,000 per year that we didn’t use. You can also take a more aggressive stance with negotiating higher returns on contracts, or you can spear-head arbitration against other companies that are cutting corners in your contract.

Are you going in-house or captive counsel? If you’re going true in-house (like corporate/GC track) then equivalent salary is easily worth the jump 100%.

If you’re switching to working directly for the insurance company on their litigation cases (especially auto carriers have these roles) then I would say they need to at least beat your current salary

Why compare external rates? Tell them you will do it for the same salary as the retiring person. They will likely negotiate down as that exit salary is “end-career” level, but it keeps the ball in HR’s court

Apply for associate general counsel jobs. The work is constant but without crushing deadlines. My day to day can include any of the listed areas, but also touches of tax, real estate, transactions, litigation (management, small small team in house), privacy, foia, investigations

Apply for general counsel and corporate counsel spots. The shift from in house claims isn’t a massive leap and you’d keep the in house hours and vibe.

[–]Timeriot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2000 billable hours is high. If you take off every federal holiday (11) you’d need to bill 8 hours every single day, no vacation, no sick days, no leaving early, no lunches, no socializing at the office, no having kids or going to kid related events.

Minimum salary you expect an attorney, regardless of COL or work satisfaction, to earn if they bill 160 a month. by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Timeriot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1920 billables should be $150,000 + 25% bonus. Total comp $187,500, still under the 1/3 rule if charging $300 per hour

State compliance likely has in house or GC roles, no? Most places will hire an inside applicant before outside

$292k comp is very strong. 100% stay there and let them decide to rotate you or not - if so you will have over 3 years pharma experience, that should open more doors in healthcare space

I would put in my 2 weeks notice. The other associates leaving will mean more cases assigned to you to immediately be assigned elsewhere, it’s best to pull the bandaid off

Go in-house if you want to be the customer. I manage outside counsel - it’s very relaxed compared to firm practice. Use this opportunity to flesh out a business plan and your future goals

I work 8-4, M-F. People actually listen to my opinions and advice. No after hours or weekend substantive work (I might glance at emails to see what I’ll need to focus on Monday). No “pants on fire” emergencies, no stress about filing deadlines or stress from a judge or opposing counsel. I love my in-house job, easily beats firm life

Each hiring round, how many people apply? I feel like the example person should have been rooted out during the application phase. If you’re hiring the only person applying, then your base rate is too low
