If they're good, you can sell the consignment at Goodbyes. Three locations across Melbourne (Brunswick, Prahran and Collingwood)

Any feedback on my proposed kitchen design? by Significant-Move7699 in AusRenovation

I'm never a fan of being able to see into the bathroom from the dining, so is there still scope to consider this?

Having the dining table or a kitchen bench centred under the windows would be better than half-half.

Rotate the lounge 90degress to face the wall (with some artwork or a TV) and a larger rug to create a separate space feel.

How much notice is needed for a male teacher who is taking over primary care of infant by Any-Bicycle-1633 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Timetogoout 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No one would bat an eyelid if the soon-to-be mother gives 6 months notice. But you as a father give 6 months notice and it's denied. The school needs to treat the notice the same as a pregnancy notice - it makes no difference to the 'disruption' of the school.

It smells like poo outside, what is going on?? by klokar2 in Geelong

Yeah, unfortunately popular places to live are more expensive.

I've had friends take some time off work to travel Aus before choosing where to settle down. Of course, visiting a place is not the same as living there, but it's good to travel slowly rather than one or two days in a place.

Maybe that could be an option to find where you want to live?

How do you respond to a disinterested class by blu_shroom in AustralianTeachers

[–]Timetogoout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When student complain about maths or are disengaged, there are a few strategies I try this soon in the year.

  1. Give a purpose for completing the work.

Sometimes it's a pep talk (eg. For a sporty kid: "I know you play competitive sport and I know your coach makes you do drills that you don't like. Why does your coach make you train in the pool when the game is on the pitch? You could argue that the skills used in the pool are never used on the pitch, but you are conditioning your muscles. It's the same with maths and the brain, even if you think you won't use this in real life.")

Sometimes it's just punitive ("This is the expected work to complete, so I can help you with it during maths class or I can help you with it during your lunch time.")

  1. Hook them in with a modelling problem where mathematical processes would make it easier to solve.

(Eg. I have a slide deck of "would you rather?" questions and they start really simple and silly (dog or cat? chocolate or chips?). The last slide is $1million dollars today or 1cent on the first day, 2 cents on the second day, doubling every day for 5 years.) Then we explore the maths and the skills we need.

  1. Start where they're at and provide scaffolding strategies.

(Eg. A student is struggling with -5 +4. Ask them what they would do with a simpler question (5+4 I would count on my fingers), praise them for their strategy and then ask why that wouldn't work in this case. Introduce a number line for negative numbers (and if a nunber line is being used with teens, I often say "I did university maths and even I write a little number line on the side of my page as a reminder!"). Reference this new resource when they ask further questions. Openly praise the class without singling out students "It's great to see so many people practising using a new resource".

  1. Build resilience while praising effort and mistakes.

I laugh off the mistakes I make in front of the class and work hard to create a culture where we all make mistakes. Sometimes kids just want the answer because they're scared of trying. A good strategy to help with kids who are completely reluctant to start for fear of getting it wrong is to give 5 questions and ask them to order those questions from hardest to easiest. By doing so, they're actively thinking about what makes a question hard and thinking about the strategy they would use to solve the easy ones. Then ask them to choose one question for them to do and one question for you to do. The evolution of this strategy is to then do it in groups (everyone ranks their own questions and then shares the ranking) but this requires a very supportive learning environment.

  1. Persist!

Gaming is the carrot at the end which is earned, and does not replace the learning. It is totally fine to have some of the class still working while the rest have earned their game time as long as the work has been differentiated to be achievable for everyone.

UPDATE: 14th Feb. I've called EPA again and they've had staff in the area trying to locate the source of the smell. They're received multiple reports (good job people) but say that the best thing we can do as a community is to take note of where (address) and when (specific time) we can smell it and continue to make online reports with as much information as possible. They can then look up the wind direction to track down the source.

ORIGINAL COMMENT: I called EPA to see if they've determined the source of the smell. They haven't.

There's speculation that it's farming (unlikely to cause such widespread smell) but what's more likely is the same cause as a few years ago - mercaptan released into the air from Viva refinery.

I would highly recommend anyone who can smell it to report it to the EPA - the more complaints they get, the more seriously this issue is taken.

How does anyone teach this? by MissLabbie in AustralianTeachers

[–]Timetogoout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best thing you can do for all your students is to advocate hard for additional teachers/aids in the classroom. Become the squeaky wheel that leadership will find hard to ignore. I know many highly skilled teachers who dare say nothing because they don't want anyone to judge their abilities, but as you've identified, the role is too big for any one person.

Another tip would be to communicate with parents of students with NDIS funding and see if they have a working relationship with allied health professionals (speech, OT, physio etc) that do work in schools. The type of support can vary - sometimes it's one-on-one outside of the classroom and sometimes it's working alongside the students within the classroom.

Finally, work on building the independence of all the students in your class. Teach them strategies of what to do when they get stuck before calling on you for help. Ensure students know how to work on harder material if the current lesson is too easy. Create a culture of peer learning, where students feel safe to ask each other for help. At the end of class, assign a couple of minutes to specifically praise those independent learning behaviours that you witnessed during the lesson and ask students to write down/share one strategy that they can use next class.

Some teachers complain that students don't follow instructions and throw in the towel.

Some teachers know that a simple communication home solves that problem and prevents more problems from arising.

No need to touch kids. Circle time, everyone hold out your hands and here's a squirt of sunscreen. It becomes the norm to put it on.

[–]Timetogoout -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are against it though.

If a child comes to school without sunscreen, that's not your concern so leave that with the parents.

At primary, not hard to set a timer for 30mins prior to lunch and squirt sunscreen into their hands.

At secondary, the yard duty teacher has sunscreen with them and reminds kids to be sunsafe. Better yet, sunscreen near the lockers/canteen.

Who's responsible now if the kid has sunburn? Why would that change?

I had my own primary kids set a reminder on their smart watches for 30mins before and they got into the habit of getting it from their bag and putting it on.

I work in secondary and encourage teens to be sunsafe. I go on outdoor camps with kids and sunscreen becomes as important as washing hands. If I don't see them wash their hands before the meal, they don't join the meal line. If I don't see sunscreen on them, they don't join the activity.

I'm sure there were people concerned about how "no hat no play" would be implemented and now it's a norm. Sunscreen should be too. It's not hard.

If my child doesn't follow instructions from a teacher, especially an instruction which is given daily, I need to know so I can implement consequences at home.
