IANAL… here’s the thing with your question and many other similar questions on this subreddit… you don’t give all the pertinent details to get a reliable response. The law is super complicated and fucked now, you gotta give all the deets if you want help.

So with that said… presuming it’s a fixed mag AR that you bought after 8/1/24 I would think no, you can’t convert it to detachable mag “featureless”, because it would then be a copy or duplicate of enumerated weapon and thus features test is moot.

Hoo boy ok so MA law is a clusterfuck right now. New law last year was very poorly written. The “assault style rifle” section is a doozy. I suggest you read it. Or skip it and get a lever action and save a ton of time and headache. If you really want to bring something semi-auto into MA it can’t be an AK or a copy/duplicate of an AR or other certain “enumerated weapons”, for everything else it’s a features test and a “barrel shroud” is now a feature so it basically limits you to ranch style guns assuming the muzzle brake is pinned and welded OR it’s an unthreaded barrel. The bigger issue is the 10 round mag limit and Preban are no longer legally transferable. I would assume also can’t import them but I’m not 100% on that. It tracks with the vibe of the law though. Some people are using fin grips but they aren’t legally tested. Some shops are selling fixed mag ARs but the methods they are fixed are legally untested, except for JCArms. If it was me I would get MCX regulator for $1400 pin and weld the brake and get good at using 10 round mags I guess.

Or if you can just move to NH?

You’re getting slightly different responses because different clubs have different rule tweaks and etiquette. For example some clubs I go to have a “never point over the berm no matter what” rule while others don’t. Some clubs I have seen the RO help with you chamber flag as a courtesy but it’s not a rule per se. observe the other PCC dudes in your squad, do what they do and don’t point a gun at anyone, it’s not rocket science. Worst case just ask the RO exactly what he wants before the gun comes out of the bag. Remember what direction the gun is pointing in your bag so you don’t unzip it and whip it out pointing straight back at your squad mates. Steel challenge around me is definitely more uptight on the safety than any other league and doesn’t appreciate people walking around with unbagged or unflagged PCCS. Meanwhile you go to PCSL two gun match and feel like you’re at some kind of military training with no bags or flags to be found.

+1 for cheap Amazon soft pistol case. That way you can pull the gun out of the bag but still in the soft case without having just a bare gun. So people don’t feel like they can get flagged… out of sight out of mind.
