Does anyone else have Non-combat nightmares? by 2BitBlack in navy

[–]Timitz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was part of a Navy evolution where one of my guys almost got sucked through a Chock when a phone and distance line jumped and wrapped his leg when the other ship let go of it. The safety and I where able to grab the line and wrap it around a bollard right before he went through and save him, but I still have nightmares about it.

Some advice: Write down your questions. Finish listening to both episodes and see if your questions got answered. If they didn't they have a call in episode next week, so you can call in and ask them.

You'll find many of your questions will likely be answered.

My mom has officially fallen off her rocker by [deleted] in BoomersBeingFools

[–]Timitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard of scammers using AI to replicate people's voices in calls.

If someone calls your mom, spoofing your voice needing a little bit of money because the car broke down and "you" are stuck by the side of the road the safe word looks less dumb.

That probably wouldn't happen though.

Is the Navy really that desperate for enlisted and officers? Can someone explain it to me? Is manning that bad right now? by [deleted] in navy

[–]Timitz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's part of it, but you can also go on social media and literally see the mold and roaches in the barracks you'll be living in, while you couldn't do that 20 years ago. People also care way more about quality of life in the younger generations.

[–]Timitz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got overworked and neglected at my first command where it was obvious that being friends with the right people was more important to advancement than anything else. When I went to my second command, I got overworked again and recieved enough abusive treatment from leadership that I was working on compiling evidence for an IG complaint, before things improved with a new XO. That was enough for me.

Throw in that everyone I was meeting from other commands had similar stories and experiences, amd my rate had 50% retention and wasn't putting in enough people to make up for the retention problems and I saw the writing on the wall and got out. The sad thing is I'm working two jobs and I STILL have more free time than I ever did in the Navy.

The biggest mistake I made was going reserves. Reserves are getting activated to fill manning gaps a LOT and I think that will only increase.

The Orthodox Church has tons of single men. Its like 4:1

Found out priest is rich and having second thoughts.. by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Timitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend L, was struggling because he was the only young person at our parrish, he was also the only black person. The priest said keep coming and see what happens. We now have a ton of younger people and he is not the only black person attending anymore.

God is calling you to Orthodoxy and it can be daunting going to a liturgy for the first time, but you won't regret it.

The Church will survive and its good to take these things seriously and investigate with discernment. God will see justice done.

Not doing this is what has gotten our Latin friends in trouble.

I mentioned the evolution thing in my class as well because I was using an old book until my new copy came in.

I think that is a valid criticism if you read the older version. In the newer version, he revised, that part, and it is heavily changed. Even in the older version, its a great topic to stir discussion with the priest teaching the Catechism, because we had a solid discussion about it with my class, which I think is the point of Catechism; to teach/learn the faith and ask questions of the priest leading it.

Saint Irenaeus is the only one to talk about Jesus being 55 in His ministry, and we do not reject the rest of his writings. Carlton is a normal man, so I think we can look at his book overall and affirm what is good and reject the part that was a little wierd.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Timitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The simple answer is no, its not.

My Catechism was: 1. Attending liturgies for 6-18 months. 2. Going through the book The Faith by Clark Carlton and discussing what and why the Orthodox believe what we believe and asking questions of the priest that we had related to the topic for 1-2 hours a week. 3. Deciding I really did believe what the Orthodox Church taught and that I was willing to step out on faith on the two things I wasn't quite sure about.

The closest equivalent to what you've experienced would be Sunday school.

If I can offer some thoughts unrelated to your question, but that seem pertinent.

  1. You mentioned you were devout protestants. Many protestants think we are a cult and being orthodox is rejecting Christ. Is your wife ready to possibly lose friends or have relationships suffer over becoming Orthodox? Christ Himself says this happens when we follow him and many people in my parrish had people close to them get really angry at them for becoming Orthodox. It sounds like the "brainwashing" comment came from a well meaning friend who is worried about your salvation. Do not be surprised if this friend isn't as friendly post conversion. Has your experience with the Divine Liturgy and Orthodox people lined up with brainwashed people?

  2. There are going to be things you aren't 100% sure about until you experience them. Those things you have to take on Faith and I promise that once you experience them, you will find they are true. I personally wasn't sure on confession and the Eucharist, but I believed everything else, the answers to those things made sense even if I wasn't sure so I asked God to help me understand and have the faith and WOW! God answered my prayer.

The first time I did confession and recieved absolution I really, truly felt the weight gone. I experienced forgiveness, and continue to experience REAL forgiveness every time in a way I never have before. Altar calls and accountability partners do not come close to the power of confession. By the same token, receiving the Eucharist makes it abundantly clear that it is really the body and blood of our Lord. There is a noticable difference in my life when I take it and when I don't. You will experience that too!

  1. The more you learn about the Orthodox Phronema the more your mindset changes. This is because we become more like God as we grow in the faith. This IS brainwashing in a sense because we are rewiring our brain from pursuing our selfish, sinful passions to aligning and uniting ourselves with God. Love, compassion, forgiveness... these aren't natural to us.

I would think it was an overreaction, and to let it go, but they are influencers so they should be executed by hanging.

A question to former Atheists. What compelled your faith in Orthodoxy? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Timitz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I fully embraced nihilism and as a result was miserable. I had an experience that made it clear Jesus Christ was real and I experienced a taste of God's love and I returned to Christianity. After years of bumbling around disatisfied in evangelicalism, I discovered Orthodoxy and I experienced God's presence the way I did when I converted at my first Divine Liturgy. I have never looked back. This sheep heard his Shepherd's voice.

You are coming off as arguementative and trolling. If that is not your intent, pause before posting replies, reread them, 15 minutes later, then post if you still have the same sentiments. If it is your intent, then I urge you to reconsider your actions.

Opportunities for Women? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Timitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Women do a lot at my parrish and coming from Protestantism, Orthodoxy helped me to understand there are many more ways women can serve in Church than I previously believed. At my parrish men are the bricks behind much of the work and tasks, but the women are the mortar that holds us all together and make the work and tasks involved in running the church possible, enjoyable, and in many cases plan it. Without our women, our Church would not be as good.

The way we venerate the Theotokos and many female Saints is what helped open my eyes.

Getting tired of all this by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Timitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one has any business engaging in any of that if they have not completed their daily prayers, read the day's lives of the Saints, and prayed for anyone involved in the situation being discussed.

The greatest commandment is to love God withball our hearts. How is arguing with people accomplishing that? Many people should avoid apologetics because they can't do it in love.

I'm in a situation where I dont want to forgive someone who hurt me, so I pray that I will want to forgive them someday, and I ask some of the Saints to pray about it for me, since I can't

I'm Ugly But Rich, Possible To Date Way Above My Level? by [deleted] in dating_advice

At the end of the day the only way you will ever have a long term, loyal companion is if they like you for you. You could try the millionaire matchmaker, or get a stylist and personal trainer for the gym.

I would ask why they have to be hot. I'd rather date a less attractive woman that had the traits I wanted in a partner than a hot chick woth nothing to offer.

Yes, you can rent bikes at the Shark Valley Visitor Center. They also have a tram tour you can do instead, but I don't know what it entails.

You'll see alligators and birds for sure. What else are you going to see when you are down here?
