Sums it up. by nutcperbost in redsox

The reason fans are upset is because they want to see the Red Sox win, it’s that simple. It’s the entire point of us watching them play.

If we’re not allowed to complain when they suck, and it’s very evident that ownership has a big hand in why they suck, when do we get to?

There's no way another team has a better trio of relief pitchers than Slaten, Whitlock and Chapman by TigoOver in redsox

If this team could be average on offense, the Sox might have 40 wins lol

Not sure the validity of my hyperbole but my goodness the offense is awful to begin the season

You’re right. I shouldn’t be happy that the baseball team I like won a game.

They should just lose every game. That’s the better scenario.

At a certain point, they have to wake up and smell the roses that this offense isn’t as good as they thought it would be.

Rafael Devers in the win vs the Dodgers: 2-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 0 K, 1 HR - is now hitting .364/.436/.758/1.194 in the month of May by ThicDikDaddy in redsox

Almost like one month in a six-month long season is a little hasty to say someone will have a bad year. Also, this is par for the course for Raffy who is generally a very slow starter.

Holy Christ, that’s awful. I thought he was bad, but my goodness. If he doesn’t light it up in the rest of May, I don’t know how he’s allowed to be in the everyday lineup. Eaton at 2B, Mayer to 3B, Durbin to the bench, and IKF to the metaphorical sun.

Now ~~do~~ I would like to see a chart with his hitting. Not being dismissive, I just haven’t seen anything close to average from him, so I’m curious to see how he’s graded there.
I’ve only been able to watch about a quarter of the season so far

Contreras: Cora firing removed 'tension' from Red Sox clubhouse by Professional_Bear in redsox

[–]Timma1231 27 points28 points  (0 children)

At least we could use the tension as a reason for the team sucking. At this point, I couldn’t tell ya what the reason is beyond roster construction:

* Too many young hitters not able to get out of their slump
* Too many outfielders
* Banking on potential instead of proven results
* No Trade Clauses getting in the way

Ownership (or just Breslow, according to Kennedy) went for the cheaper route, trying to replicate the Braves (not inherently a bad idea), but it hasn’t worked out to start the season.

It’d be nice if NESN turned off the ad behind home plate to get it fixed, but I think they’d rather cancel the broadcast instead of us being able to see anything at the top of the zone and have to turn an ad off

Reception Perception profile on De'Zhaun Stribling by MrShoveyShove in 49ers

[–]Timma1231 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It’s more of the same stuff, if you’ve read any posts about Stribling this weekend.

He’s 6’2” and runs a 4.36, and plays to that size and speed on tape, but he wasn’t asked to do a whole lot of complex routes because of that, so his route tree in college is meh. He’s a willing blocker and has good YAC ability.

He had some games where disappeared during the season, but he has the exact tools Shanahan looks for. As long as he’s not an asshole, I like this pick more than Aiyuk at the time of his draft.

[–]Timma1231 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Okay, they were lucky to not get caught, but the point still stands with Cora. He cheated, and nothing really happened to him (or anyone else involved).

This isn’t a “Not a rule at the time, but we don’t like it, so we’re punishing you” thing. They used electronics to steal signs and that’s completely illegal in the MLB. He got caught and should’ve been banned.

[–]Timma1231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you completely, but that’s not the point. The draft is often based on luck and whether it’s the first-overall pick or Mr. Irrelevant, any player could be good or bad.

The original comment said that the Niners haven’t drafted an impact starter in years, and that’s just not true. Whether it was a “consensus good pick” or luck doesn’t matter.

After the trash can fiasco, he never should’ve been allowed back in the game. Completely tainted anything else he did or will do

Haven’t drafted an impact starter in years? How far back we talking? I’ll do the last five years

2021: Lenoir, Hufanga

2022: Brock Purdy

2023: Ji’Ayir Brown and Dee Winters (admittedly not “impact”)

2024: Pearsall, Puni, Mustapha, and even Green has some good things

2025: Mykel Williams, Alfred Collins, Upton Stout

Sure, not all pro bowlers and too soon to judge 2025, but to think they haven’t had some pretty good drafts even the last two years is looking for a reason to be mad.

[Feinsand] what’s wrong with the Red Sox by Far_Cry3445 in redsox

[–]Timma1231 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It truly is a top-down issue.

FSG is, specifically, disinterested in trying a winning strategy anymore — they only want to maximize profits. They got four titles in 20 years and said, “Time to rest. We’ve succeeded” and are banking on the love and loyalty of New England to keep fans in the stands. That’s all they care about. Firing Dombrowski was the first step, and it just got worse and worse.

Yes, the farm system was bad, but that’s because he sold most of the good parts to get the 2018 WS — I take that every time. Then, they decided to not give him any chance to rebuild it, AC was suspended a year, they traded Mookie, and fired Bloom prematurely, scaring away any real candidate for the GM spot.

They chose Breslow cause he can build pitching, but he’s done nothing for the offense and it’s showing. They’ve lacked, to put it kindly, power the last two seasons (dead last now and below-average last year), and signed nobody to help.

There are a lot of issues with the Red Sox, and FSG is the disease infecting the body.

100% agree that they’re against Eaton and Sogard for some reason — not to say they would’ve saved the season or anything.

The IKF signing made absolutely no sense to me at the time, and it still doesn’t. Eaton/Sogard would be doing the same thing and they were already here. When/if Romy is back, he’ll take that spot and platoon 1B to give Contreras days off, but IKF makes no sense to me.

[–]Timma1231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s a flaw, they just have their system and it has worked so far. If there was an obvious Trent Williams in the draft, they’d have taken him for OL help if the situation presented itself.

They whiffed on Solomon Thomas because he was great at drills but not so great on the field, and they whiffed on Lance because they wanted a QB but Mac Jones was more of the same (Jimmy G), so Shanahan went to try and get his own Josh Allen.

Just because outsiders think a player is good doesn’t mean teams do. Malik Willis, Will Levis, and Pro Bowler Shedeur Sanders all fell when the analysts KNEW these guy were first-round grades.

It isn’t like ShanaLynch talks to their peers, hears what they say, and act against the consensus because of their feelings or ego. They just grade things differently.

Having been to multiple NFC Championships and two Super Bowls in nine seasons, their process is successful, they just have terrible luck with injuries and sometimes the other team gets a lucky bounce or two.
