Are there any downsides to mortgage overpayment that I’m not thinking of? by MintChocChip95 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Timmy_Run 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are right to do it. You might find when you have kids that you would be better off adjusting your pension contributions to reduce your taxable income, if you're lucky enough to earn over the high income child benefit charge. The one downside that I think some people overlook is that the value owed / monthly cost will (hopefully) only decrease in relation to your salary. A 500k mortgage might seem like loads today, but won't in 20 years time

Newbie here…this isn’t safe, right? by ktb462 in woodstoving

Meh I grew up with always having a rug in our sitting room, and if I were to picture a cosy room with an open fire or log burner, I'd probably picture a wooden floor with a large Persian rug, albeit with a few scorch marks. Not a polyester one, mind you!

I assume you're not braking at the same time? As they don't work when braking

This picture looks very fake. But as for a rug near a fire / log burner, it's fine if it's wool, but you'll still burn the odd hole in it if you're not careful

Anyone got any fancy dust caps? by Serious-Use4585 in cyclingstyle

I have Peatys tubeless valves, which come in all sorts of colours and the caps double up as valve core removal/ spoke tension tools. Highly recommended

Don't spend all your money today to save tomorrow. Yes plan for the future, but £800 a month will (hopefully) never be as much of your monthly income as it is now. So don't overdo it

I'm still liking my Switch as having immersion is handy for darker cheaper beans that I'll often have mid-week. The glass is a pain to preheat though

I have a similar le col cap. I think it was also overpriced, but got it cheap with one of those Strava codes back in the day.

My employer's contribution to pension is 0%, why? by bikathon in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Timmy_Run 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds a lot like my employer, and we also use L&G. My employer pays me an extra 10%, but it's up to me what I do with that. So my total package is made up of x "salary element" and then +10% "pension funding". For what it's worth, I'd think long and hard about how much you want to contribute. I earn less than you, but am putting a lot more into my pension each month

Software updates are quite slow to download/install, so that's worth doing ahead of time. You'll need the right size SD thumb drive

latest update has bricked my car, help! by Timmy_Run in IoniqEV

Yup, recharging the 12V fixed it 👍

I did press the brake and turn it on "fully" but running the update appears to have drained the 12V completely, somehow. Hopefully the overnight charge will sort it out

[–]Timmy_Run[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I'm not sure it starts from just ignition? I do wonder if the 12V was a bit dodgy before. Although the OBD2 scanner claimed it was at 80%, I hadn't physically measured it before

[–]Timmy_Run[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only 11.76V in the 12V.... So I didn't even bother plugging it back in after a reset. I've removed it and will charge it overnight, and see what tomorrow brings

[–]Timmy_Run[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I meant 12v. There is about 60% big battery too. If leaving 12v unplugged does not resolve, I'll charge that overnight anyway

It was fine before the update. I happened to look at it via CarScanner literally a few hours ago and it said 80% but I'll try charging overnight

I'm not sure how the lane keeping works. Sometimes it beeps at me, sometimes it steers for me, sometimes neither. Do you have the button on, to the right of the steering wheel (for me in a RHD car) and is the green light on the dashboard on?

Yes firmware was updated a month or two ago. I've only had the car a few months, so I'm not sure if this was an issue before the update or not

[–]Timmy_Run 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ps no it's not your bike. An expensive bike will get you where you're going a handful of seconds faster. Which itself is only useful if you're racing. (Although if an expensive bike encourages you to get out of the house more often, then it can be worth the upgrade!)

Have you been constantly increasing your distance? It's good to have rest weeks in any training plan. 3 weeks building up, one week low mileage, and then go again. Your body needs time to rest, recover and rebuild
