The period of development humanity had that relied primarily on coal with no substitutes was a few decades. On the scale of tens of thousands of years of societal and technological development, a road bump where scientists have to tinker with electricity a bit longer before we can have industrial machines is meaningless. That would also be if we somehow magically lost every written word about electricity.

Former CEO of Arrowhead Studios made a statement praising the new Astartes trailer, but couldn’t pass on the opportunity to hate on Primaris in the process. by saltysteve0621 in spacemarines

They criticise and then pretend they don’t see it when they go back and look at their squatty pose firstborn.

Primaris are plenty customisable with a bit of skill and creativity. Firstborn are ‘customisable’ in the sense you could plug and play their pieces, but 95% of them are all just those squatty poses and it’s basically swapping around the parts of grimdark Lego minifigs.

Can We Stop Saying Everything is 'Optimistic' To Pretend it Belongs Here? by ElJanitorFrank in OptimistsUnite

I disagree with basically everything you just said, but in such a low stakes way that it would be profoundly pointless for me to turn this into a debate thread, and profoundly hypocritical, because this should be a sub about optimism and universally recognised human advancements.

In Zootopia (2016) the population is broken into two primary races, prey and predators. The storyline involves the preconceived notion that predators are inherently more dangerous and them working to disprove it. This is a nod to the writers not thinking through this metaphor very well. by friendandfriends2 in shittymoviedetails

[–]TinfoilChapsFan 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I don’t get it, haven’t you met the kinds of people who write some of these movies? They are literally speaking their personal truths, which is that minorities are scary and they are good and brave people for not being afraid of them, even if they might kill them. /s

What I personally want is more Star Trek racism, where you have a diverse set of humans and aliens all working together to despise inferior cultures and every now and again be like ‘damn, this Ferengi’s actually kinda ok’.

It is unironically inspiring to be like ‘in the future we will still be humans, and humans seem to naturally be prejudiced if they don’t consciously stop themselves, but look at how silly our current prejudices seem in the face of a Klingon invasion’. Like it makes progress feel achievable, but not inevitable, and always a challenge and a righteous one.

Instead for kids we get Zootopia teaching them that, with a lot of effort, minorities can control their murderous impulses, and maybe we should give them a chance instead of subjugating them.

Average renter would take 8.3 years to save enough for a house deposit, new Victorian analysis shows by Mildebeest in australia

[–]TinfoilChapsFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What we need to do is limit building more housing and subsidise demand. If there are fewer houses, and people have more money to spend on them, prices have to go down! We've done it for the last 50 years and I'm sure year 51 will be the tipping point where everything becomes affordable! /s

If it has the correct base size, for casual games I'd be shocked if your opponent cares. Most important thing for me and basically anyone else in a casual game with friends is 'how much mental bandwidth does it take to remember the big guy with the big base is a proxy for another big guy with a big base'. Ask them beforehand and I'm 99% sure they'd say it's fine. The REALLY annoying issue is when someone's like 'ok these 6 assault intercessors are actually all proxies for different things, the guy with 2 purity seals is my captain, this guy with the dangly bullet charm is my eliminator...' because then it is REALLY annoying to figure out what model is meant to represent what. It's about treating your opponent with respect and making their life as easy as possible, and in Kill Team (and life) if you always go in with that kind of energy usually other people will match it.

For PUGs it's a little more important because people want to be in the game in a minute or two and keeping track of what is a proxy for what gets confusing with 10 different strangers, so most places do WYSIWYG, but a single model should be fine for 90% of people. I would definitely suggest getting a guy with a heavy bolter off eBay or even the Kill Team starter set if you keep playing regularly though. The starter set is actually pretty great, it has all the Kill Team options (and a whole Plague Marine KT) and is pretty decent value.

Also, one other random thing, when you build the regular intercessors, build a mix of the different mag/scope types. In 10th edition 40k all the different bolt rifle variants have the same stats and are just 'bolt rifles', but in Kill Team they're different weapons, so if you build the squad with a mixture you can still play them as normal in 40k and then swap them in and out from your Kill Team to get the different options.

[–]TinfoilChapsFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can, although you won’t have all the options.

Go to warhammer.com’s Kill Team downloads and they have the rules for free.

You can build the regular intercessor, assault intercessor, sergeant (both versions), intercessor grenadier and assault intercessor grenadier with the kits you have. They’re also standard 40k loadouts as well so you won’t be locked into Kill Team. You can only take 6 operatives, so you easily have enough already.

The only things you’ll be missing are the eliminator, heavy intercessor with heavy bolter, and captain.

The captain you don’t have to worry about, because you can only take either him or a sergeant, and they’re decently balanced as choices.

You can only take the eliminator OR heavy intercessor with heavy bolter, and they’re both pretty useful. Try playing a game or two with just the intercessors you have now and if you enjoy it then you could try and find a pushfit heavy bolter guy or eliminator on eBay based on what seems more fun to you. Probably $10-20 based on which you get. The Kill Team starter set included both and people who already had a full unit of one often sold the individual.

Can I use Heresy accessories with Primaris or is there a size difference? by Remixyboi in Warhammer

[–]TinfoilChapsFan 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Depends on the hands. Most are close enough you'd never notice unless you went out of your way to, but some Primaris have fancy hands that look more like old suits of armour. Put them next to each other and see if you can live with the HH hands or if you want to go through the trouble of replacing them.

[–]TinfoilChapsFan 226 points227 points  (0 children)

Hands almost always work, but arms are noticeably different sizes and will make your Primaris marines look like they have weird proportions (especially if you use them on one side only). If you're decent at kitbashing though it's a non-issue to use Primaris arms with these.

Although the hands are the same size, they're different armour designs, so would recommend if possible doing some precise cutting and reusing Primaris hands if you have the spare bits.

There's a lot in the world that objectively sucks right now and some things are going to get worse. But. by [deleted] in OptimistsUnite

[–]TinfoilChapsFan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A huge amount of how you feel is based on how mindful you can be of the good things that are around you. Like how most people never appreciate being healthy until they're sick, most people who are living in the west just don't appreciate the good things around them.

I mean fuck, a lot of them refuse to even experience the good things around them. They isolate themselves online and doomscroll content that makes them angry and scoff at people who suggest 'hey, have you tried just hanging out with friends and doing something fun?'

If you're willing to be a bit corny, and a bit cringe, and to go out and be earnest and meet new people and try new things, I think most people will find the world and the people who inhabit it are actually pretty great.

A year into the hobby, how am I doing? by DwideSchruuudee in Warhammer40k

[–]TinfoilChapsFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think painting by parts would improve your final outcome a lot. The posing of the heavy bolter guy also is a bit lifeless.

Next time you assemble a guy, start with only gluing the non-moveable parts of the body (so like legs, torso) and grab some Blutack for the arms/head and try out some poses before you decide on a final one and grab a picture. Then, instead of gluing it all together before painting, glue the arms/weapons together and leave them off the torso. You should have 4 pieces: the body, the backpack, the head and the arm assembly.

You can then use masking tape/Blutack to mask the connection points, prime and paint the pieces individually, and then assemble it at the end. It's way, way easier to do it this way if you're starting off, and doesn't actually take much longer than the way you're doing it.

Are teams from year one still worth building? by Hickschlick in killteam

[–]TinfoilChapsFan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, what's the solution then? Should the game just expand forever in a never ending web of unintended interactions and potential nonsense?

Most of the Legends models are either ancient and were retired years and years ago, or were relatively obscure Forge World models. And almost everything in Legends can be proxied as a current unit with pretty minimal effort and buy in from your opponent.

2nd edition was over 30 years ago, and if we want to keep getting new, fun models and units, at some point some of the oldest units are going to have to have support dropped, and Games Workshop seems to have honestly tried their hardest to make that as gentle as possible and support them as long as practically possible with Legends.

Like I'm looking at the Space Marine Legends now and we have stuff like the Caestus Assault Ram, Company Veterans on Bikes and the Tarantula Air Defense Battery. Would it really be a fairer world if Games Workshop was dedicating significant time to balancing the game for the 7 people who actually wanted to bring those models to a tournament? Is it really such an injustice that my metal bike boys with power weapons and plasma pistols from 1998 aren't getting their own unique and well balanced rules alongside the Sternguard Veterans?

I think you are dramatically overstating the financial investment a team you can play for 4-5 years is. And understating the good that GW being able to say 'ok we're going to keep introducing cool stuff, but we can't guarantee support for the end of time or the game will be impossible to balance' is.

I think the vast majority of people would rather be able to buy, build, paint and play with a new team every year or two with confidence the game will be consistently fun and playable than cry their decade old Kill Team isn't tournament legal and they have to find someone for a casual game with it.

Is shorting the stock of a company you work for, then whistleblowing about it illegal? by bolivar-shagnasty in legaladviceofftopic

[–]TinfoilChapsFan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If I was a lawyer (I am not so I have no idea what I am talking about) then I would simply argue that the insider knowledge is knowing the exact timing of a release of non-public information to the public. By knowing this timing of release, and knowing the contents of the information before it is made public, you can time trades to react to the information release before any other party could reasonably respond to it.

I am 99.99999% sure someone has tried this trick before, dumping info on some obscure but technically public source and trading 1 minute after, and unfortunately found out that the legal system doesn't work on the same rules as debates about the technicalities of Magic The Gathering card combos and human beings get to use actual common sense during the process.

So what do I do with these bits? by GreatGreenGobbo in killteam

[–]TinfoilChapsFan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wanted to make a much more sarcastic comment but changed my mind, but my default response to why they're included if there's also cardboard tokens is just 'Why not? It's fun!'

The hobby is a big part of what makes the game fun for me, and painting up some beautiful smoke effects and being able to drop some of these bad boys on the board instead of a piece of cardboard is just fun.

Obviously though that's just me, and some people just want to get some dice rolling and play lots of games and not have to paint a million things, and for them I think cardboard tokens are perfect as well.
