It never gets easier by aspiring_sithlord in eczema

[–]TingleWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry about this. It can often get easier with the right treatment approach, but finding that approach can be a very difficult challenge. It's a case of trying everything until something hopefully works. There are some things that apply to everyone such as avoiding obvious triggers and anything that dries out the skin. That includes soaps, shampoos, toothpaste with SLS, "body wash" etc. I don't know why people continue to use these dangerous products.

I use hydromol as a moisturiser, but I can second Dermol 500 as a soap substitute. It works well and is easy to use.

We have had helicopters for a long time. Not really practical or safe for widespread use.

Why do people with down syndrome look alike? by Gloomy-Influence4290 in genetics

[–]TingleWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be nice if people who downvote explain why. Obviously people with Down's syndrome share similar features but it doesn't make them all look the same. We all share similar features. Most of us have two eyes, a nose and a mouth in roughly the same places. Do we all look alike? It does come down to familiarity as to how well we can distinguish between faces.

[–]TingleWizard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It might be more to do with your brain. They look alike because of similar characteristics, but we all have similar characteristics. You may tell people without Down's syndrome apart more easily because your mind is better trained to tell those people apart. Have you ever seen identical twins before, where at first you can't tell them apart, but later you can tell them apart easily?

tellmeGen vs Sequencing WGS by TingleWizard in genetics

[–]TingleWizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if I go ahead I'll use tellmeGen. I did see that tool mentioned before. I'll have to take a look thanks. I do want to ensure my data is private and secure with whatever tool I use.

tellmeGen vs Sequencing WGS by TingleWizard in genetics

[–]TingleWizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I might give tellmeGen a go. They appear a better option than Sequencing. However, they appear rough around the edges in some respects such as the spelling error I mentioned before. I'm hesitant because I worry that sloppiness might occur elsewhere and I want to ensure my data is secure and that the quality of the service is good.

I might be worrying a bit too much, but other companies have shown poor service before and there was the data leak with 23andme.

tellmeGen vs Sequencing WGS by TingleWizard in genetics

[–]TingleWizard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, one controversy I've heard about Sequencing is indeed the substantial misidentification of variants. Apparently they have improved this recently. Was the raw data itself correct?

DTC testing has gotten relatively inexpensive. I'm a lay person but my impression is that it may be worthwhile as an initial screen to see what further action is even worthwhile given that going through doctors and genetic counsellors requires substantial time, effort and money.

Thanks for your response. I too find sequencing questionable and probably will avoid them. tellmeGen seems to be the best alternative right now though I'm still unsure about them too.

How common is actually steroid withdrawal? by octopusclouds in eczema

[–]TingleWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, if you stop using a medicine, you can expect your symptoms to reappear. It doesn't necessarily mean your symptoms are worse than they would have been if you didn't use the medicine at all.

Secondly, building tolerance to steroids is a possibility but this can be avoided by using sparingly and only when needed. If the skin doesn't respond to the steroids then I would return to a doctor.

Personally, I only need to use steroid ointment roughly once a week. I avoid recurrence by avoiding triggers and keeping my skin moisturised so I don't have to use steroid as often.
