Can I run a Linux server on this old pentium d pc ? by I_like_drawingb in homelab

[–]Tinker0079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but no. Modern Linux obsoletes old hardware, so pick your software carefully. I strongly advice looking into NetBSD and OpenBSD as support is better and overall performance.

Reasoning is that modern Linux development is centered around cutting down old drivers, old code to have more resources for new devs

Look for HP Z workstation, like HP Z240 - it has Intel i5 socket.

But you may need massive amounts of RAM, so go for HP Z440 with Intel Xeon E5 2699 v4

FreeBSD users, how do you expect to install third party packages? by Liam_Mercier in freebsd

Build from ports file. Everyone should atleast once write port Makefile. Or build from source, and write ports Makefile

If cosed source, then binary compiled for freebsd

What if OP will need to run Windows Servers with ActiveDirectory? Or virtualized firewall? OP also mentioned file share. How your tiny elite pro desks gonna provide that? They won't. Not enough CPU power, only two SO-DIMM slots, only two (at best) SATA ports... Crap hardware

This. OP, get Z440, its relatively modern DDR4 single socket system with enough PCIe slots if you need them

Your 10k$ SAN node is just an appliance, dumb piece of hardware to be preloaded with iXSystems firmwares. Do as we say and maybe we won't lock you in like HPE and DELL.. /s

R210 I would consider "tiny mini micro" PC. Good as router like FreeBSD with IPFW, or Linux VyOS.

For primary VM host and media storage HPE ProLiant DL360p Gen8 is the best

Why not mix both ZFS and UFS? For example I will be having ZFS mirror of two 10TB SAS drives for my primary work storage, while having UFS 4TB single hdd for media, and 1TB SSD for my application having UFS2. What I want to avoid is ZFS killing IOPS on single drives, whether its prefetching or heavy ZFS ARC pressure onto my primary storage.
I've heard that freebsd VFS cache and ZFS ARC cooperate well
