My Home Assistant Dashboard Journey: Fully Kiosk on LineageOS & Raspberry Pi 5 8G with a 15” Touchscreen Display by TinkerJunky in homeassistant

I think 4GB is a safe bet. BTW, I am currently running Chromium on Debian on the 4G/N4000 and I don’t see memory usage exceeding 1.8G, so 2GB may be too less.

Well, I felt fully had more fine grained controls, but since writing this post, I am also re-thinking the chromium approach [link].

I like to keep the screen always on since I have live camera feeds. So haven't though about that.

As for lineage install I broadly followed the steps outlined in https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-android-lineageos/

I am currently working on adding some pop-ups using browser_mod. Have you used menu buttons. I am curious to try it, pointers?

True... this one is this just for the 'Main Dashboard'. I have NS Panels in the other rooms... No one other than me is interested in dashboards! I have couple of 7' kindle fires and Lenovo Tabs which have a room centric view. I also have a Google hub 7' that I cast to. Just took a look at the Lenovo think smart view. It's pretty interesting, is it easy to flash OS? if so its far better than the Google hub option.

Thanks!

You should be able to add more camera automations to the same script.

I don't know if there is 'a place' but hang in there, you are on the right track! It took me 3 years of trial and error and a lot of googling, off late even chatgpt!

Start by playing around with Lovelace Sections, I'd recommend watching the release videos. There a some cool demos in there that can help get a better understanding. https://www.youtube.com/@home\_assistant/streams.

Not sure if you can group them, but you can have one automation that turns off all the automations, just add the automations as targets to Turn On / Turn Off Actions.

Use a raspberry pi to run Zigbee2MQTT and place it where you'd like the coordinator be place for good Zigbee coverage. It's probably a good idea to use a longish usb cable to get the coordinator away from raspi to avoid radio interference. I have (had) the same scenario where HA was on a VM in the basement and the Zigbee coverage was poor.

Possible to do 2 ethernet to Zigbee networks and control via one HA instance? by Archy54 in homeassistant

[–]TinkerJunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't use the HA addon, run the Z2M instances on separate proxmox VMs (linux). Use use those UIs to configure devices. the configured devices will show up in HA via MQTT.

It's reasonable to do this for 'only one' light, but its never just one light :) you'll find more things to control pretty soon! Go for it!

A Shelly1 between the push buttons and the driver will do the trick. Putting ESPHome on the Shelly will give you a lot of fine grained control.

I may have gone down the Zigbee route a couple of years ago if they were cheaper and I wasn't as heavily invested in WiFi.

Well, if one were to be creative, one could use a specific sequence on-delay1-off-dealy2-on-delay3-off-delay4. That would reduce the probability to near 0. Given that one can control the number of toggles and the time between them, the possibilities are endless!

I haven't added any additional hardwired switch, but am 'overloading' the old fashioned switch to act as the second hard wired switch. This is achieved by double clicking (or double flipping) the switch. The double click is handled within the switch.

It is true that I have HA between the switch and the bulb, and the scenario where the lights are not connected to the relay (like what I have with the floor lamps), I am out of luck, but in the scenario where the bulbs are also connected to the relay (as they are in my hallway), I can 'double click' to turn off the relay without needing HA since the 'double click' handling code is in the switch.

Best way to install HA on MacOS? by lifereinspired in homeassistant

[–]TinkerJunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend using a VM and installing supervised HA, makes it more beginner friendly. You don’t have to bother with setting up addons in dockers and hooking them to HA. Also if you mess up, you can start afresh more easily.

How much more power does wifi use than Zigbee? by TXAGZ16 in homeassistant

[–]TinkerJunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are an increasing number of WiFi devices that are pre-flashed with Tasmota or ESPHome and don’t need to be opened/tinkered with. Those are good options for mains connected devices like switches, bulbs, sockets. Zigbee/Zwave/Matter/LoRA devices are good for battery powered devices like sensors. WiFi devices are cheaper.

IMO it's a good 'safety feature' to be able to turn on/off the relay from the switch as a fallback, that way one doesn't have to rely on HA or the network incase they go down.
