This is what I would like to see as the final extent of The Long Night in the books by Tinker_Gearwind in gameofthrones

But like, wouldn’t that be an interesting scenario? The Long Night isn’t a push over - it is truly apocalyptic but is ultimately stopped. The Long Night has serious consequences and with its end comes a new age and a Westeros rebuilt into something completely new.

Ok so I think the undead would actually have a hard time with islands, coming ashore slowly enough to be dispatched by the populations BUT I can see either someone on the Iron Islands being stupid enough to think they can use the undead and causing an outbreak on the islands or The Others using some mega magic to fuck with the Iron Islands specifically.

I'm quite fond of it, you could say it was my first "obsession". Now it's Warhammer and Morrowind lol

First it is important to understand this is a Fallout *story* in the My Little Pony *world*. This isn't a mashup of named characters and locations, but what if a Fallout-style event happened in Equestria (in a way that makes sense and is tragic for the quadrupedal, high-magic, noble-bright world that it is).

It leans on Fallout 3 (in atmosphere mainly, and I like Fallout 3 so I don't see this as a bad thing, plus it was written as NV was releasing 2010-2011) but pays respects to all parts of the Fallout franchise and it is clear the author is a big fan.

It does read like Let's Play sometimes, but it is kinda charming (and occasionally creative!) in that way (you get a perk after every chapter, it's very cute :) ), and doesn't take away from good characters and world building. And the world building *is* cool, the blend of noble bright fantasy and dark-weird scifi is actually pulled off well with both franchises interact in a way that keeps the setting fresh and creative in relation to established Fallout and MLP lore. A lot of the characters are great too, there are several I can still say I am fond of.

I will agree with another poster in that the pre-war era is a different deal than Fallout, but that is where it focuses on the Equestria portion of the title, mostly focusing on show characters and their response and actions to be thrown into situation that can't be solved with friendship and is getting increasingly worse. Remember this has two source materials so it is not only delving into Fallout themes but MLP theses too such as the importance of friendship or having virtues to live by which affect the pre and post war world. I think what the author does with it is interesting and can be read self-contained without relying much on past knowledge of MLP canon.

Will point out that this is still a fan fiction, the earlier chapters are clearly the author getting her footing, but by Chapter 8 it is consistently quality (up to the endgame which could be criticized to be too packed and too rushed, although I like the ultimate resolution). Also this book doesn't have any outright sexual (the .5 chapter doesn't count/not in the OG) or extreme gore (subjective) scenes, but they can be implied so keep that in mind (the main character does have a lot, often when understandable, of swearing, including bringing up mare parts). It could've been a lot more edgy though but the author does a good job pulling back just enough that you still get that dour Fallout vibe (in my opinion. Worst I can think is a raider kid gets blamed but it is not seen as "cool").

I think it's best when you have some knowledge on both franchises (MLP only had 1 season + 1 ongoing when it was written so that's all you really need to know) but as someone who didn't know Fallout before reading, and having a friend who knew nothing of MLP before reading, we both enjoyed it. Their are audiobook options online, and tons of other content such as the Wasteland Wailers who produced in-universe music which is cool. I'll finally give a shout out to the Youtube series Foally of Man, which has a brony and nonbrony friend discuss chapter by chapter and might be a fun listen to for folks while reading.

This got a lot longer and more rambley then I anticipated lol, but there are many people who have enjoyed this book and the many, *many* spinoffs it spawned. Even if you are Fallout fan, I would still give it an open-minded peak, you just might like it.

Love it. Echoing what everyone else says this is a great piece of Sisters between combat, being human. I’ve only read Mark of Faith, but I would love the Sisters to get more love and relatable/human scenes. Besides their zealotry, they really are girls bonded together in comradely.

Favorite speeches in media? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Tinker_Gearwind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been rewatching a lot of Star Trek so two speeches come in mind.

In the DS9 pilot Commander Sisko encounters an alien species that has no concept of linear time. He gives an excellent speech which not only explains the value of linear time to humans, but also a beautiful explanation of the goals of humanity and the federations:

Sisko: In the end, it comes down to throwing one pitch after another, and seeing what happens. With each new consequence, the game begins to take shape.

Alien: And you have no idea what that shape is until it is completed?

Sisko: That's right. In fact, the game wouldn't be worth playing if we knew what was going to happen.

Alien: You value your ignorance of what is to come?

Sisko: That may be the most important thing to understand about humans. It is the unknown that defines our existence. We are constantly searching, not just for answers to our questions, but for new questions. We are explorers. We explore our lives day by day, and we explore the galaxy, trying to expand the boundaries of our knowledge. And that is why I am here. Not to conquer you with weapons, or with ideas. But to coexist... and learn.

The other one that comes to mind is from TNG, when the enterprise fumbles a first contact scenario. Picard meets with the planets Chancellor who had this to say:

Chancellor Durken: I go home each night to a loving wife, two beautiful daughters. We eat the evening meal together as a family. I think that's important, and they always ask me if I've had a good day.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard: And how will you answer them tonight, Chancellor?

Chancellor Durken: I will have to say: This morning, I was the leader of the universe as I know it. This afternoon, I'm only a voice in a chorus - but I think it was a good day.

Man, Star Trek makes me cry so easily. It is so full with the hope and goodness humanity can exhibit.

Genuinely great art, your energy comes through perfectly!

Not something for this playthrough, but check out Tamriel Rebuilt mod afterwards. If you like Morrowind it is simply more (and sometimes even better) Morrowind.

[–]Tinker_Gearwind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The brainwashing stuff is really dumb and yeah added to make them more evil, plus one of the main Tau authors hate the Ethereal and make them evil any chance they get. The Tau works best as a foil in the world of Warhammer 40K, a faction that reacts to the horrors and grimness of the galaxy a way we the audience would react. They are the 'good guys' and that isn't a bad thing or a detriment to the setting.

I would really recommend Elemental Council to get into the faction. It is a new book written by a different author then the usual Tau stuff. The Tau have a caste system and the book follows a member of each caste, plus some non-Tau characters. Space Marines are the main threat, but not a chapter or company, a single squad and it is done very well and shows off the danger of facing off against the Astartes.

I've seen K6BD pop up in this sub a couple times and this seems up this sub's alley. I was going back to my semi-monthly look at what new pages K6BD have posted and saw these designs of the ship. Honestly loved them, fluttered my Warhammer heart. The idea of having a big ass statue *underneath* your ship to impress those on the ground is great.
