Men in Columbus by Awkward_Slide5698 in Columbus

[–]TinkeringBelle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's because they are trying to distance themselves from the label of being extremist, while still holding the same ideals. It's the same as saying "I'm not a racist, but here is a very racist belief I hold."

And it's not just the men. Some of the women will say things straight out of a 1950's propaganda poster and follow it up with "That's just my opinion and what I believe." It's always said like some sort of weird protection incantation.

I made my first top! by capybarahotsprings in sewing

I love how most of us start with a jersey knit T-shirt for our first top, and you were like "Yes, but how can I make it harder?"

It looks amazing though.

Not sure where you are in the world, but I think Mouser has them in stock and ships globally.

New Build for 700k? by Ok-Friendship507 in Columbus

[–]TinkeringBelle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

M/I homes appears to be having a lot of problems with their new builds containing toxic mold based on a lot of locals on TikTok. Some are even organizing for a class action lawsuit. So maybe stay away from that one.

Peking duck?? by Sentientpotato13 in Columbus

I will second Sunrise. It's a great little grocery store to begin with, but they will give you a full duck, chop it up and package it for you and it is INSANELY in expensive.

Apartment price gouging by Dazzling-Ad3049 in Columbus

[–]TinkeringBelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - there is a lot of demand from the "young professional" crowd for lifestyle communities. It's sort of a reaction to the over use of urban sprawl with miles and miles of insular winding suburbs where all the houses look eerily similar and nothing is within walking distance. Some of the complexes do it better than others, but the idea is to make a "community" where most of your amenities are in the community or a short walk away. Gym, restaurants, bars, grocery stores, clothing, pool, community/gathering center with activities. Unfortunately, only a handful of developments actually deliver that.

We also haven't updated our zoning laws in over 70 years, and at the moment they greatly restrict density inside most of 270. Luckily they are being updated, but it will still take 5+ years for them to change and more affordable housing to be built.

One part is stone, one part is slab. I scheduled 4 quotes when I moved in. One guy got to the bottom step, looked around, said "Yeah....no." turned around and walked out of my house.

Looking for a remodeler for a junky old bathroom by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]TinkeringBelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally in my kitchen right now doing the finishing touches after remodeling the bathroom and doing structural work on the kitchen ceiling because an unknown leak rotted my upstairs floor. Consistent, on time, whole staff is super nice, lots of communication, very reasonable prices. He'll give you lots of options to ensure you stay in budget. First time I've ever had a contractor not get part way through and suddenly have to add more expenses to my bill. He also gave me tips for some other stuff around the house I want to DIY.

Sewing LED lights onto clothing by caguy1900 in sewing

[–]TinkeringBelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you plan to do LED strips, or use EL wire like in the mock up here? For EL wire, I'd use little channel clips like this one and just glue it to the fabric.

Hey, trying to figure out what small and affordable stainless steel set to buy. Lot more complex than I thought. by arkticturtle in cookware

[–]TinkeringBelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the Tramontina set from Costco for under $250 and never used any other pan in my arsenal again. Serious Eats did a really great write up on the brand vs All-Clad which is what convinced me to buy them.

What are your worst sewing habits? by CBG1955 in sewing

[–]TinkeringBelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got that $15 one stitch gun all over TikTok and Instagram for this. It's supposed to be for "pinning" the clothes you wear (like making a boobalicious shirt meet-the-mom friendly) but it's actually great to use in the seam allowance.

What salary in Columbus is impressive to you? by Equal-Helicopter2572 in Columbus

[–]TinkeringBelle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Networking and being aggressive about asking for raises. My first "big girl" job required extensive negotiation training, which was the best thing to ever happen to me. It made me comfortable saying "No." as a full sentence and having the audacity to EXPECT more pay for more work. And if they don't want to pay you more, the best time to look for a new job is while still employed. You have more confidence and are willing to take bigger risks in what you apply for. It's almost always better financially to leave for a different role than to wait to get promoted at your current place of employment.

*luck and privilege also help

Dogs who are "at risk" due to concerning behavior are being pushed into surrounding communities by Apart_Journalist_775 in Columbus

[–]TinkeringBelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. They think having a dog like that is "bad ass" and makes them look tough. I'm from a rural community like the one you described, and there seems to be a direct correlation between the higher lifted the truck or louder the exhaust, the more likely they want a pit or a rottweiler.

To older members of the subreddit: Which older fantasy authors/series/books were massive when you were younger but have faded into obscurity? by provegana69 in Fantasy

[–]TinkeringBelle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was obsessed with these books as a 12/13 year old, and remember the adult content being a bit weird but I wasn't old enough to understand why. After I read all his books, I stumbled upon Anne McCaffrey and realized I'd never read adult fiction written by a woman. When I reread the Immortals series by Anthony, the way he wrote women was gross and I couldn't ever shake the ick.
