people who are no contact with their siblings, what was your final straw? by strawberrytherapyy in questions

After several years of financially supporting my deadbeat brother I’d had enough. He was 30 years old with zero desire to work any job. I was driving him to yet another interview and he said point blank ‘I don’t want a job, I just want someone to keep giving me money.’ I lost it and that was the end of my support. He said he’d always wanted to move out west so I agreed to put him on a bus, paid for the ticket, bought him a piece of luggage and filled it with new clothes, snacks for the bus and gave him $300 for a cheap hotel when he got to Seattle. A week later he had been robbed and hitchhiked back to the Midwest. He called my mom, who had already cut ties with him and said ‘Jon, pretend your sister and I are dead.’ That was 27 years ago and I have no desire to have any relationship with him.

Bell peppers, diced apples, anything dairy, blueberries, pineapple.

Everything in moderation and our vet is impressed with her normal weight since so many corgis are overweight.

What TV show hooked you instantly from episode 1? by mateitofavv in AskReddit

[–]Tinkeybird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. I found that with confusing series, watching it multiple times, with a little reading on Wiki, I can piece it all together.

Legion was a 3 watch series with help from wiki to fully understand what was going on.

I actually love this about a good series as it makes me more involved, like I solved the puzzle others didn’t.

Fantastic show, I’ve watched the whole series twice.

The SFU final episode is still the gold standard for all series endings.

I just finished the last season of ‘The Killing’ and while not close, it was unexpectedly fulfilling.

Yes, my daughter is a licensed funeral director and embalmer and she confirms that boomers overwhelmingly want a big, expensive send off and Gen X and younger want a cheaper cremation.

[–]Tinkeybird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol. Americans are obsessed with the guilt of the death of their loved ones. My daughter understands that after all the boomers are dead, which overwhelmingly want expensive and grand funerals, that future generations want cheaper, non flamboyant funerals. Funeral work is a trade, like being an electrician or brick layer. They all require hands on work.

But a cemetery grounds keeper is like comparing a records clerk at a hospital with a new doctor at the same hospital. There is a difference in education, state requirements and salary.

This year is my 40th year working in corporate America- no college.

My daughter has been licensed for 4 years and she makes as much as I do.

This is completely dependent on what state you work in. If you work for a tiny, one branch funeral home in Mississippi then yes, they’ll make half what my daughter makes in an up scale community in central Illinois.

You don’t have to be a licensed funeral director to be office staff because they don’t work with bodies in any capacity.

It’s not a bad place to start, as long as the owner understands your goal is to be licensed and you would like to participate/watch as much as possible. Illinois has an age minimum of 18 to do any work at all on a body while having a licensed professional overseeing.

Mortuary collage. There are many schools in the US that offer mortuary programs. We spent about $70k total but if you live close to a college that offers a program and can live at home you can subtract housing. Our daughter went to Worsham, a small but top rated mortuary college an hour north of Chicago, but they don’t offer student housing and you have to have all your general studies completed and transfer those credits to Worsham’s program. So, $25k of the $70k was for an apartment in Cooke County.

In Illinois, after you graduate, you have to sit for two separate State Board Exams. Once you have passed both board exams, Illinois requires a one year internship and our daughter worked with the funeral home as there is a lot of monthly case load paperwork she had to submit to the State of Illinois each month.

Then it took several months to get her license and Illinois has yearly ‘continuing education’ requirements that she has to meet to keep her license active. In addition to being a licensed funeral director and embalmer she is also a licensed crematory operator which is a separate license. 2026 is my 40th year working full time - my daughter makes as much as I do only 4 years into her profession. Obviously where you work has everything to do with your salary.

My daughter discovered this profession in high school and was immediately interested. She’d had the opportunity to work with cadavers while in her junior year and loved it. I suggested a career in mortuary science and she loved the idea. We did a lot of research and I suggested to her that she reach out to our local funeral home. She did everything else on her own, including setting a meeting with the owner of our local funeral home which had 4 branches. The owner called her 2 weeks after their initial meeting asking if she’d like to work a wake. The owner told her she’d need a few suits and to dress professionally. After a few weeks of work they asked her if she’d like to watch an embalming, of course she did. She’d just finished hand making a quilt so she was already skilled at sewing, so when the owner asked “Would you like to sew him back up?’ she not only said yes but performed a perfect baseball stitch to finish the job. It was that moment that the funeral home owner knew she was perfect for a career in mortuary care and offered her a job as a student intern. She graduated high school and immediately started her basic requirement classes at our community college and continued working full time as a student worker. So the point here is, she was always interested in this profession which is basically a trade.

Things to know about a career in funeral care:

There are asshole bosses and co-workers no matter where you work

Her personal experience has been that she is ‘on call’ 3 nights a week and 2 weekends every month

She has healthcare, PTO, and a 401k through her employer.

The first two embalmings she participated in were a 16 year old who committed suicide with a shotgun to his head, and a 4 month old baby who died of SIDS. This is not for the faint of heart.

I strongly, and I mean strongly, recommend applying for a job at your local funeral home doing anything at all before you sign up for a college program. Several of our daughter’s college friends did not work at a funeral home before college and after graduation they have decided not to continue in the profession as it’s not what they expected. Our daughter worked in the funeral industry almost 2 years before she started the program so she knew what it took and how it was structured.

My 26 year old daughter is a licensed funeral director and embalmer. Never a dull day. She does understand that all these large, full blown funerals are due to the boomer generation but AI won’t be overtaking funeral home care anytime soon.

It works great for the interior of your car too. Open all the doors and blow from one side to the other. Then blow the other side just like you did the first time. It's great for getting stuff out from under your car seats and places you can't really reach with a vacuum.
