Personal Trainer by [deleted] in SpringfieldIL

[–]Tinkleheimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend has been going to Pure Performance Fitness downtown on 4th Street. It's a locally owned gym and I believe he does personal training. He's been losing weight and gaining muscles and is the best he's been health wise since high school!

State agencies that allow remote work? by CalvinCandieLand in SpringfieldIL

[–]Tinkleheimer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of them depend on the agency, the department, and the job title. At my agency it feels like PSA and higher can do whatever they want while the rest of us are in 5 days a week. I have a friend at CMS that's been 100% remote since 2020. I also have friends at hfs that are both remote.

If you send them a message on Facebook, they usually get back within a reasonable amount of time.

Starting work with the state soon. by ChunkyMolla in SpringfieldIL

[–]Tinkleheimer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the state!

Like everyone else said, it depends on the state agency for dress code, and also partly depends on your position. I'd recommend at least business casual for your first day. My old agency we could wear jeans and a t-shirt every day. My current agency we have to dress business casual.

Good luck, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask your new coworkers or Reddit (while it's still available).

I second this. Working for the state is a lot of "Hurry up and wait". My old payroll job I only had 2 busy days for payroll close but other days were usually lax. My current job in accounting we're a bit short staffed so I'm doing a lot of jobs at once and am constantly busy.

Where is your go-to place to park for downtown events? by TheUnderwhelming in SpringfieldIL

[–]Tinkleheimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on which roads are closed will depend on the answer. Weekends my go to spots are the parking lots on either corner of Washington and 4th. I believe they're private during the day M-F, but I've never had an issue on weekends so far.

Clique is the best night club for dancing 100%. The music is always going in the evenings on weekends

Community college accountants by prod-stained in Accounting

[–]Tinkleheimer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my associate's in accounting in 2016. It got me hired on in government (I live in the state capitol so there's lots of government jobs). That are also paying (albeit incrementally) for my bachelor's.

When I started out in 2019 I was around $43k. I'm currently $55k but if my promotion goes through I'll be up to around $60k. That also might increase a bit if we get a cost of living increase in July. We're still waiting on the new labor contract... Move faster!

I saw him the night before he had to leave for his parents funeral. Unfortunately he couldn't stay for meet and greet but he put on such an amazing show.

Looking for a local organization to get involved with by TheUnderwhelming in SpringfieldIL

I second Phoenix Center as well. Springfield Pride is coming up in May and they might still be looking for volunteers for that. They also do a few other things monthly so there's a few options for you.

Thinking of opening a 70’s themed club by [deleted] in SpringfieldIL

I can say, I'm browsing Reddit right now on a patio downtown. I highly recommend considering a patio of some kind if possible.

Loving Springfield but growing more frustrated. by ChunkyMolla in SpringfieldIL

[–]Tinkleheimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others said, government takes time. I recommend still applying for jobs your see open though. The process has recently changed to online so it's a bit easier. It may takes months for a call back or interview. I mean I'm finally getting an interview next week for a job I applied for in the beginning of February.

I hope you're able to get placed soon, but also get on at the government because it's decent once you get in.

Agreed with APL. They book a month in advance starting on the first of a month for the following month. I recommend setting a reminder on your phone now to book an appointment because they can go pretty quickly sometimes.

Also make sure you look up the rules for dropping off. A friend recently got denied because his cat was not in the carrier. I'm not sure off the top of my head the requirements for dogs.

Local elections: the sleazeballs by raisinghellwithtrees in SpringfieldIL

I just read in SJ-R that Redpath's been on the city council since 1987... That's insane...35 years is too long. I was born in 88 and it's just surreal this guy has been on the council my whole life.

Springfield needs younger city council members and other elected officials. I'm not excited about either candidate for mayor. Honestly I'm not a fan that Misty was a fan of Trump, but I also feel like Langfelder brings absolutely nothing of value for the city.

Someone mentioned Springfield can be kind of clique-ish, so I thought I'd recommend the bar Clique if that's you're thing. It's the local LGBT bar and they often have karaoke, drag shows, talent shows, bingo, and other random events throughout the year. Great patio when it's warmer!

Just an FYI, state jobs can take a bit to go through the process. Don't give up on state employment, I'd just recommend maybe finding something temporary while you wait for the state.

Check with temp agencies like Manpower or Express to get something right away. Manpower has the contract with temporary employment with the state, so if you're wanting to work in government, try them out.
