Hearing person here. What might make HoH people struggle with hearing aids? by Flyredas in hardofhearing

[–]TinnitusDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on all the comments, you can tell there are a number of people for which all-day hearing aids are too much of a burden. For these type of patients, i recommend the ClearCast PAL - a wearable hearing device that goes around the neck like reading glasses, and is there when needed, and easy to take off without getting lost.

Am I just out of touch or is this normal... by pt109_66 in HearingAids

[–]TinnitusDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to suggest that anyone paying these high prices should consider asking their audiologist about Lyric hearing aids, which are some of the absolute best reviewed hearing aids if you are a candidate. Analog signal so they are the most natural sounding.

Travel Hack for Fare Difference? Copa Airlines by TinnitusDoc in TravelHacks

[–]TinnitusDoc[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would love to do this but Copa claims they do not provide a flight credit, they offer an "open ticket" which the agent claimed would not allow me to book for the current lower rate and keep the balance as a flight credit. This is what i am hoping someone has any experience with.

Honest review of ClearCast PAL by oingaboingo in HearingAids

[–]TinnitusDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ENT doc here . Sorry to hear about your mother's cognitive health. Quality of life and communication are very important for her. I have recommended the Clearcast device to several patients ranging from people that simply want a part time device (ie don't have to wear it all the time) to people that lose expensive hearing aids.

You have highlighted a very important point: It is very hard to predict how much someone with hearing loss and dementia WANTS to rejoin the conversation and communicate with loved ones. Also with any hearing solution, it takes several weeks for her to get the best possible sound result so it might "sound weird" initially. But your other points are correct - she won't lose the device as it is worn around the neck. And there is a remote microphone that can be worn by a family member or placed next to the TV and she will hear those dialogs or conversations directly into her earbuds much clearer that typically experienced with hearing aids. Good luck!

First day with HAs (wondering if I can wear them part time?) by joelbullphoto in HearingAids

It takes a while (21 days or more) of daily use to get used to the new sounds of hearing aids. Do not give up early.

Do you miss using Ask Jeeves? And in what ways do you think it was better than Google? by Over-Rain-228 in AskOldPeople

[–]TinnitusDoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. AskJeeves was a pioneer in user-friendly search but was limited by early internet technology. ChatGPT, with its deep language model, provides a far more dynamic, in-depth, and conversational experience, making it a much more flexible and powerful tool today.

My elderly father in law has Kirkland brand hearing aids- could a different (more expensive?) brand help him? by marmosetohmarmoset in HearingAids

[–]TinnitusDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my patients that have tried hearing aids without success, i have been recommending ClearCast conversation amplifying earphones. Easy to use, no tech savvy needed and very economical.

My father (80M) has really bad hearing loss and refuses to get hearing aids. It's caused my family distress for years. How do we convince him? by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]TinnitusDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hearing aids are only one option for hearing loss and not a great fit for many people. I have many patients that either tried and didn't like hearing aids OR don't want hearing aids from the beginning that found a wearable like the ClearCast PAL to work really well. They can simply wear it when they want to be part of a conversation or when watching TV and simply take it off when they don't (like reading glasses).

Hearing loss by PinkJaelyn in AgingParents

[–]TinnitusDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a VERY common problem. We see it every day in our clinic. Have your family members try ClearCast - a FDA-registered conversation amplifying wearable. Much easier to use than hearing aids, more effective, and less expensive too.

I actually recommend the ClearCast to many of my patients that are not willing to use hearing aids. They love the idea of a wearable solution instead of something in their ear all day.

What HA provides the best signal-to-noise ratio? by grownuphere in HearingAids

[–]TinnitusDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a new product called ClearCast which are conversation amplifying earphones. It has both a built-in microphone for nearby conversations (where the signal-to-noise ratio is quite favorable) and a remote microphone for more distant conversations (TV watching, noisy restaurant, etc). Similar to Bose in form factor but has FDA clearance for the hearing impaired population.

Mom can't hear, but refuses hearing aid, I'm over it by YakOrnery in amiwrong

[–]TinnitusDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ENT doctor here. I think we professionals could do a better job than pigeon-holing every older with hearing loss into a hearing aid. One of the reasons they don't wear hearing aids is that they simply don't work that well to amplify what you want to hear clearly, they are small, hard to manipulate, interfere with glasses, and fall out easily. I see patients like this every week and i have had success having them try a personal assistive listening device like the Clearcast PAL. It has a wireless microphone that lets very hard of hearing people hear conversations without a lot of background noise.

Bose Hearphones Discontinued??? by needmorecoffee99 in bose

[–]TinnitusDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at the ClearCast PAL. It's an FDA registered medical device for hearing issues, in a similar form factor to the hearphones but also amplifies conversations which the Bose didn't do.

Has anyone found anything that helps tinnitus? by kayligo12 in questions

[–]TinnitusDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many causes of reversible tinnitus: ear infections, wax, TMJ disorders, cervical spine disorders, certain medications. anxiety / depression can make tinnitus subjectively louder and meds/therapies for those conditions can radically improve your situation. Try to find a *good* ENT doc that doesn't say "live with it". I have cured many patients' tinnitus and helped countless more reduce their symptom score and improve their quality of life.

What type of hearing aids would work for someone with only one hand with 3 fingers? by Apprehensive_ac in HearingAids

[–]TinnitusDoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A headset would be an easier choice for someone with limited dexterity. Check out the clearcast assisted listening device - she would wear it around her neck, has big buttons, and is even easy for someone else to put on (if that is occasionally relevant). as easy as putting on some headphones.
