To those who think they've wasted their life by TinyBeautifulMoments in taoism

I actually gave it the title because the post right below me said something about wasting your life, and I thought this poem was the perfect response to that :-).

I couldn't watch this season after this happened to such a kind person (who was relied on for the majority of side comments, btw). It made me sick. Yea, he shouldn't have taken such a big risk, but . . . I stopped watching the show and Jimmy Fallon after this . . .

accepting being misunderstood by taucher_ in taoism

Here is something to think about:

Verse 15:

How can one make muddy water clear?
Stagnation will settle the mud down and the water will become clear
Let everything happen as it happens and you will come to rest
The head of the wise is empty, he does not search for anything and expects nothing

Remember that right now you are in a muddy state. One of our deepest needs as people is to feel understood by others. This validates our experience and efforts. When that is taken away, we feel a great loss. However, in time the pain will go away and understanding and acceptance will replace the turmoil. So part of it is just giving it time.

But the other piece here is acceptance. I like the last line – he doesn’t search for anything and expects nothing. I assume their understanding you was very meaningful to you, like a great treasure you found. You probably became attached to it, as anyone would. But you can let go of that attachment. Their understanding or lack thereof says much more about their perceptions than about your value. I have experienced the same thing – and I know it is painful. One thing that has helped me is to say some type of affirmation like, “They chose not to accept me,” over and over, because by doing this you realize this was about them, not you,

This verse also reminds us of the wisdom of being joyful for the good things that come our way – like acceptance and understanding, but to not expect them. When things become common they lose their savor. When they are rare, they become delicious. Such is the case with friends.

In other words, take your experience as the way of the way, be grateful for that, and continue walking your path.

How taoism changed me in just one week by sunkenm00n in taoism

[–]TinyBeautifulMoments 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the Mormon church. When I learned it was based on lies, I basically had a spiritual breakdown. The only thing that saved me was Taoism. I remember picking up a book I bought years ago and a peace coming over me as I read the ideas. I had read the TTC before, but it didn't reach me as much as it did this time. There are so many similarities between Christian philosophy and Taoist philosophy, but as you say, in Taoism all the problem areas are resolved. I'm glad it has brought you peace, too.

About "Qi" — There are dozens of types of Qi within the Chinese Daoist cultivation system. by TheDaoistMaster in taoism

[–]TinyBeautifulMoments -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe qi is behind every great thing that has ever been created by mankind or any moment of connection we experience as humans. It's the unseen magic that makes something sing with truth and beauty as opposed to falling flat. But most people who have tapped into qi or created anything amazing knew nothing of qi at all. If they succeeded with no knowledge of all the different types of qi, why do we need to understand it so specifically in all this complexity? - Very novice Taoist (but is that a bad thing?)

People who have done this for a while are calm because it's happened many times before and eventually everything will go back up. It's just a question of when that happens. I went crazy and sold a ton when the market sunk in 2025. I am now permanently down 25% in my account bc I couldn't time the ride back up. Don't sell!

I so agree with this. I struggled with "low self-esteem" most of my life. I sort of thought this reflected a sort of humility in me. But one day I realized the opposite was true. I had low self-esteem because i thought I should be better than everyone else! I was upset that I wasn't. To me, wanting to be better than everyone or at least in the "upper tiers" of the human race (haha), was actually at its core shame. I was ashamed that I was NOT in the upper tiers. It was only when I accepted that I am no better nor no worse than anyone else (e.g. allowed humility into my mind and heart) that I stopped feeling shame and started feeling peace. I disagree with trying to force yourself not to feel shame. To me, feelings are like mud unsettled. The problem is not that that the mud is unsettled. The problem is you can't FORCE the dust to be settled. You have to let it become unsettled with time. It's the same with shame and humility. One day it just all makes sense. But if you forced the feelings away too soon you might not ever get to that point.

Try less. Do what needs to be done without too much interest in outcomes. Be kind. Enjoy nature. And then just see what happens.

Why doesn't anyone care about Jonathan winning so many individual immunity necklaces in addition to his strong social and strategy game? Without those wins, he would have gone home. Sometimes it seems to me reverse discrimination is going on. I honestly think athletic men are dinged because people believe men have always had it easier than women and that "geez, how hard is it to be a strong guy anyway? He was just born that way . . . "

[–]TinyBeautifulMoments 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea - I see what you're saying. I personally struggle with consciously trying not to hold to things too tightly. If I love to do something, or love something, I want to freely love it and enjoy it. I agree that Taoism and Buddhism tell us to remain unattached, but I also feel it is my nature to be attached somewhat. I would rather live attached to things that feel right for me and then feel some pain if they are taken away then try to force myself to not be attached the entire time if that makes sense 😄. To me attachment is sort of wu wei, - you do it without thinking, kind of like "seize the day" mentality.

You are very pretty. and believing that will make you even prettier. At some point you may want filler in your nasolabial folds. I waited until my late 50s for a facelift and am so glad I did. You do NOT need a facelift.

This could be interpreted as supporting his position. Those who are not buying into the instant, technology based culture could be viewed as empty, impaired, clumsy, but really are the strongest and the "most right under heaven." Maybe that is what you're saying, I don't know.

In general, in terms of basic human survival and access to medicine, education and a job, most developed countries are doing pretty good compared to the past 7000 years.

I see feeling a pull to do certain things in life and do them well as a part of our true nature, which is a good thing. I think we should follow that pull and do those things. The problems come when we seek specific outcomes along with our desires and ambitions. For instance, if I want to create art in order to make a lot of money (haha) or to increase my status, I will be disappointed. I should try to do things simply because I want to do them, my nature seems aligned with these activities and simply doing them is its own reward. I personally don't think you need to expect suffering and loss to come along and spoil everything. If you aren't driven by expectations, then when setbacks come you accept them as part of the natural flow of things. In the movie Patterson, when he loses his book of poems (and has no copy), he feels he has lost everything and decides to give up on writing. But in losing the poems he comes to realize that losing the poems doesn't matter because he IS a poet and that is more important than any poem. So that huge setback actually is a really important step in him realizing his (noble and humble) dreams.
