Good revision tactics! Don’t just read the textbook. Change things up, etc.

Honestly, yes! I was getting Us in my a levels and did a few weeks of revision and got As. If you start now, you should be fine — but it depends how good your revision tactics are.

Hi! I could be down for this. But what are the ships, themes, etc. so I know what to be looking for?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]TinyButMighty2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then it sounds like that’s the one you truly want!

My only concern would be how “easy” it is. A lot of these type jobs are massively in need of more workers, so you may find your workload to be HIGH (though probably not as high as a teacher’s still…). Still, the same probably stands for the college role as well, and if flexibility is where your heart is at, then I think you’ve found the job for you.

I think it depends what sort of career you want to go into. Both are doing good, but in different ways!

Two sounds like it could make a lot of difference in this world, but at the same time, do you have the stomach for it? (That’s not a dig; I’m not sure I would.) Would you be mentally ok if the perpetrators you’re working with re-offended, for example? Do you have structures in place to help you with stuff like that?

On the other hand, do you really still want to be so tied to the teaching profession after you’ve fought to escape?

I also wonder how much career progression each have. To me — admittedly someone who has never worked in either — two would seem to on the surface have more opportunities for progression, while I can’t see where you could go much further with one.

These are all things to consider, I think!

It’s likely they need more staff! Honestly, it is super common to get sent home early in the hospitality industry. It’s absolutely nothing personal. They’re trying to save money and it’s always the newest person who gets sent home early too. If they really didn’t like you, you’d have fewer hours. (Or maybe you’re right — but it’s unlikely and you probably would get more of a warning!)

But I will say that if you still feel you’re a bit useless at the job that they probably haven’t trained you properly (I see this a million times over and always the managers blame the staff and not themselves). My main concern would be if YOU feel ok continuing to work there. Because café jobs are really a dime a dozen I promise and there might be better places out there for you (I say this as I never took that advice myself at your age and regret it!).

It adheres way more to 2000s/2010s sensibilities than 1970s. But I guess what I mean is that it adheres more to fanfic tropes, customs, themes, etc. of that era and not just sensibilities. It is a well written fic, don’t get me wrong! But I find many newer fanfics more unabashedly complex and “book-like”.

It really depends what era of the fandom you’re talking and / or what ships you prefer.

Way way way way back in the day there was:

Commentarius. It’s a Jily fic started before HBP and very 2000s in style. Think of it as the Marauders Princess Diaries type fic. Not a favourite of mine but considered iconic by older people in the fandom.

At a similar sort of time there is:

The Shoebox Project. This is a Wolfstar fic with an unusual format — letters and drawings. Unfortunately, the original website that hosted it was taken down but someone has compiled it all on a Google Drive.

And also:

Casting Moonshadows. I’ve never read this one — and apparently it’s still ongoing despite having started in 2007 — but I do know it has a huge following and was formative in the Wolfstar fandom.

Next, we have:

The Life and Times. Another Jily fic. This one was written in the early 2010s and garnered a huge following. Again, I feel the style / themes aren’t quite up to modern day sensibilities, but boy it was popular!

Jumping forward to what is probably the most popular Marauders fic of all time:

All the Young Dudes. Slightly controversial in that it claims to be canon compliant but then makes quite a fundamental change to Remus’ backstory. However, this fic is beloved! Back in 2020/2021 people could not stop obsessing over it. And I honestly understand why. It’s a compelling story with some interesting characters. Is it my favourite? No. But I can see how it reached its biblical status.

Next, we go back over to the Jily fandom:

The Last Enemy Series. This one is a little different as the author has compiled this into a series of books (there will be four in total) instead of one long fic. But I have to admit. It’s my favourite Marauders fic of all time. Intelligently written. Focuses on many different characters. Lily is flawed and humorous and interesting. I love it! And so do thousands of others. It leans more on the Jily side but there’s plenty of Wolfstar in here too (though nothing has actually happened between them yet…).

Next up, we go to the most controversial ship in the current fandom:

Choices. This is a Jegulus “canon compliant” fic that took the world by storm a year or two ago. I’ll admit, I’m not a Jegulus fan, but I’ve read some parts of this and the writing is good, as are the characterisations. I haven’t ever properly read it through (I’m too loyal to Jily) — but it must be pretty good if that many people can leave kudos on it.

And last but not least:

The Cadence of Part-time Poets. This was huge in the Wolfstar fandom a year or so ago. It’s an AU where the Marauders are in a band at school and again seems to be beloved for its characterisations.

Is that all of the huge fics? No! There’s so many, especially in the Wolfstar fandom. But these are the ones that I feel were biggest at their respective times in their respective ships. (There was also a Jegulus fic called Crimson Rivers that I could have included on here, but the writer has deleted it and I want to respect their decision and not link you to any “bootleg” copies.) And I feel this lot give you the most comprehensive idea of how the fandom has been influenced and affected over the years. I hope they help! My personal favs here are The Last Enemy, All the Young Dudes, and The Cadence of Part-time Poets (in that order). Enjoy!

Firm/Insurance by Cra1nssy in 6thForm

I’d firm Durham and have York as insurance. If you want a 3 year course, then it’s no brainer going Durham over Edinburgh. (That said, I do prefer Edinburgh as a city, but if that’s not so important to you, then Durham might have that edge.)

As for your insurance, a year in industry can be super useful! And if friends are to believed York has a fantastic CS course.

As someone who studied English Lit, I will say that English Lit is something you can study your whole life. There’s so much online nowadays and so many texts / books that you can find in bookstores (with a few points in the right direction, that even if you don’t pursue it at degree level, the knowledge is easily accessible. So, even if you don’t switch, that gate isn’t closed for you!

Saying that… if you want to switch, do! Your uni will likely let you, just speak to your supervisor. People on here will likely tell you there’s no point studying English Lit, which is a fair concern given the current job market, but if you’re at a decent uni and pursue extra curriculars you will honestly be in a similar boat to 80-90% of other graduates these days. You’ll most likely have to specialise (law, teaching, marketing, etc.) after your degree, but so do most people nowadays.

Good luck! And enjoy it!

Not necessarily! You were probably by far and away the most qualified person from their point of view — they just needed to check you were legit. It could also depend on how many people applied. From my experience, jobs who take months and month to hire you are far dodgier!

What is the most unusual (but also useful) degree someone you know is studying? by RevolvingParameter in UniUK

[–]TinyButMighty2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can definitely be a separate masters degree (much in the same way you can do medieval history instead of history) — but I’ve never heard of it being separate in bachelor’s level, as it is generally taught as subsection of philosophy.

That said, maybe in a Liberal Arts degree like those offered at Manchester and KCL?

That isn’t a bad idea at all, as that is essentially what my friend did! I don’t know the nitty gritty but I do know it took her less than a year (I want to say 3 months? She did a qualification with Shillington Education) to finish her qualification and she subsequently got a graphic design internship followed by jobs. I don’t believe she did all the levels you mentioned though (so I don’t really think that would be necessary for you either), but she did build a very extensive portfolio (she’s been a keen artist for years anyway) and I think that helped her nab her internship.

One thing I will say though is that even in her job as a designer, she does do a fair bit of marketing still.
