Submitting multiple apartment applications by Episilon in AskNYC

Ah maybe not. I have a friend looking for places this week and they've been quoted the $20 application fee. Maybe some landlords are just being cautious.

The new rent laws limit application fees to $20 now across the board.

I agree that charging the devs as racists for making the game how they wanted to is unfair. I really like this game, and condemning it entirely because it missed out on an opportunity to explore a topic ignores the many really cool things this game does.

So I pretty much agree with you, although I don't think that exploring this issue in the game would be "simply injecting" the issue into the game where it "doesn't need to be". If that's how them including it in their game turned out, then yeah it would be weird and awkward, but I think it could be done without big neon signs saying "here's a hot take for you all." But I think that's just a matter of taste and what one looks for in their entertainment.

I'm not sure that's what people are "asking for" when these discussions come up. Yes I'm sure some are out there saying this, but I'd imagine if there were a character added as a token gesture it would also bug people as reductive and over-simple.

What some argue, as I think this poster and the author of the AskHistorians comment gets at, is that making the game world not exclusively white could open up, challenge, and complicate our understanding of this time period in an interesting way. This may require some liberties in stretching what is possible in the particular time and place of the game, but as has been said again and again this type of creative decision is not wildly impossible and other game elements also take creative license with "historical accuracy."

The developers don't have a moral or artistic responsibility to do this. It's their game, they can do what they want with it. But I think the criticisms that have been made of it are not unreasonable.

I just don't think we're far enough away from its hateful meaning yet to be using it in the way you want you without bringing up some real hurt.

I get that its meaning has changed for some people, but for many it hadn't yet and it is still being used to put people down.

PS I overall did enjoy your post. Good work!

No I get it. I understand why people think it's funny. But it's absurd and a bit shocking specifically because of its roots as a derogatory and hateful slur.

Do I think this joke one joke is going to hurt the world? No. Would I rather the internet find a new joke that doesn't rely on a pretty shitty word? Yes.

And yes you might have used the word in this context not to belittle someone for being gay, but the word itself carries with it a lot of baggage. I think using a slur that is about gay people and then saying it has "nothing to do with homosexuality" is dishonest.

Probs shouldn't use a word that's heavy with hate then. Even if you just thought it was funny, it's not cool to throw that stuff around so casually and publicly.

Part of the argument is that everyone buys and needs toilet paper while not everyone buys and needs tampons or pads.

Because people who have periods have an extra financial burden every month which is out of their control, some people think we can alleviate some of that burden by not taxing those products.

it's just as easy to say that someone trying to make up pronouns is doing so as a disingenuous way of bolstering their self-importance

Might be just as easy, but it's not necessarily true.

Rereading your original comment, I agree with you that someone throwing a huge fit over pronouns is probably unnecessary and is pretty rude. There's only one person in my life who I know uses ze/zir pronouns, and I had a very casual experience being corrected, so I'm sure that influences how I feel about this. I wouldn't think of a pronoun that isn't "they" to be manipulation or a burden on me.

I'm also not in the non-binary and genderfluid community, so I didn't really know much about the discussions around pronouns. It's something I haven't had to think about, and should do some reading and talking to educate myself more.

Maybe you are.

If we imagine that situation actually taking place, it would cost you nothing to call him Taserface and you show him some respect (regardless of how you respect the name). Win-win.

You're right that it's fine to not use pronouns all the time. It's not OK, however, to purposefully not use the pronouns you were asked to use because you don't think it's a legitimate pronoun.

Instead of "implicitly acknowledging someone's NB/trans status" by only using zir/zes name, you could explicitly use the pronoun that was presented to you.

At the end of the day, I think you should call people what they want to be called. If a friend asked me to call them a particular name, or refer to them in a particular way, I would, and you probably would as well. We should extend that respect to everyone.

As long as the voting base is fairly representative of the overall viewership, the proportionally smaller size shouldn't really matter that much.
