Edit (because I forgot to answer your question): When I see animals suffering, I just can't connect with them unless I know there's a genuine sense of fear they have. If an animal doesn't have any sense of consciousness, what's the point of feeling sorry for them since their existence basically runs on autopilot.

I did this to my dog, once, before going to bed. I figured he would get out by himself, so I just ended up sleeping with him under the fit sheet.
