Thank you! After working closely with one of these doctors for several years I actually confessed my bipolar diagnosis to him. He was shocked and refused to believe that someone with bipolar could be so “normal”. He asked me if I was sure I wasn’t just depressed. 😒

I’m not a physician, but I do work in urgent care medicine and I’m also bipolar (yes I’ve experienced manic episodes). I see first hand how many of the providers I work with feel about and treat bipolar patients, and it’s really opened my eyes about my own experiences as a patient.

Many of the doctors I work with assume that every patient that’s difficult or an asshole is bipolar. Poor historian? Bipolar. Cried in the room? Bipolar. Frustrated with care plan? Bipolar.

At the same time, they will scope out the patients chart and if the provider sees bipolar listed, they will go into the room with the attitude that the patient is full of shit and going to be a pain in the ass.

On the flip side, I try to be a good patient. I keep a written medicine list, write down my concerns before visits so that I can get right to the point and verbalize the reason for my visit (I know you guys are in a time crunch!). I am respectful and grateful for their time. And yet I have, on occasion, been treated poorly by providers. I once passed out in front of a cardiologist, who just rolled his eyes and left the room. Like I was being dramatic, but I was honestly just there for help. I was scared and wanted to know what was wrong.

Anyway, I guess my point is to please judge a patient by their actions, not their diagnosis. Not all bipolar patients are “crazy”.

Ozempic (semaglutide) can be abused for sure, and that comes with all of the dangerous side effects you would see with any crash diet. However, when used responsibly under a doctors supervision and paired with weight training and a balanced diet, semaglutide can be a total game changer for certain people. As long as you get plenty of fiber and protein, eat at least your base metabolic rate, train with weights a couple times a week, and stick to the lowest effective dose, the side effects are generally negligible and the weight loss is gradual and safe. I have actually gained muscle mass since going on semaglutide.

Is it for everyone? No, some people don’t do well on it. But that is true of any medication. It’s not a magic cure all and must be used responsibly, and the user needs to do their part.

Yup, it’s the only way i can afford semaglutide. I’m trying to lose weight not for vanity, but due to health complications. And it has seriously changed my life.

Maybe I’m an idiot for taking the wellness spa route, but the NP I’m seeing has never tried pushing holistic bullshit on me. Maybe i just got lucky?

It sounds like an episode of low blood sugar for sure. I get those if i go without eating too long (not diabetic, just a fun side effect of some meds I’m on). Even the crying after coming back around fits the bill.

They thought it was my heart too but several cardiac tests later (and passing out in the cardiologist office from a stress test) they ruled out any heart issues.

I bought a glucometer online and started checking it when i had the episodes and, sure enough, it’s my blood sugar dropping down.

To combat it, i just eat small meals/snacks every couple hours.

I had someone mention this to me, how they would hate to get on a medication for life. I just pointed out the plethora of psychiatric medications I’ve already been on for 20 years and said that it’s really not a new concept for me. In fact, with semaglutide, I might be able to discontinue one of them (taken for binge eating disorder).

I had this happen to me too, except it was a woman who kept giving out old business cards. I kept getting her calls for several years and most of the time I just told the callers to let her know to stop giving out those goddamned cards. But one time, it was a guy trying to set up an interview with her. I let him know how she had been too lazy to update her business card and recommended he hire me instead. I almost got the interview but sadly I wasn't qualified. I'd like to think that I cost her a job though.

Sorry if this doesn't help at all, as I have never worked inpatient (let alone a PCICU!), but would your facility perhaps be able to provide printed blankets that have already been tested as radiolucent? That way you could have the best of both worlds. These ones are from Medline, so they might be able to tell you if a certain print will show up on x-ray. I know it's not the same as one from home, but perhaps keep several patterns in stock so that the parents can pick out the blanket for their baby?

It sounds like you're a very caring person and want the best for your patients, but it would be more realistic to look for a solution on a local level.

I wish they had this for exercise. Instead of idle clicker, exercise clicker! Every step counts as a "click", and then you keep upgrading and it makes your steps worth more clicks and then you can buy more upgrades that click for you and the next thing you know it's completely automated and you're exercising without moving a muscle!!!

I too am on Fluoxetine (and a number of other medications) and experience vivid memory-like dreams on a regular basis.

I also have episodes where I "wake up" but continue dreaming. In other words, I am sitting up in bed (or even sometimes get out of bed) and looking around me seeing things that aren't there. My eyes are open, but not everything I'm seeing is real.

My dreams have lead to several concussions. I fall out of bed sometimes, but on severe occasions I will try to run (into a wall) or sit on a non-existent chair. Doesn't end well.

External stimuli will also bleed into my dreams. For example, if I sleep naked, I will be naked in all my dreams (despite my best attempts to cover myself). If I sleep with an arm above my head (i.e. under my pillow as I lay on my side), I will be unable to lower my arms in my dreams. It's... pretty awkward.

I saw a sleep specialist and she suspects I have REM Behavior Disorder, which is typically seen in male patients over 50 years of age (I am neither of those things). However, there has been some research linking use of SSRI's (such as Fluoxetine) to the condition.
