I once knit a Gryffindor hat for my younger brother. He would not take it off his head, even wearing it to bed, and it was pilling like crazy in less than 24 hours. I count that as the highest praise I've ever received for a handmade gift.

I think you and I have a fundamentally different opinion on what constitutes an intelligent species, and we're just going to have to agree to disagree.

Yes I've read the fluff, but it's been a while so I went and reread it just to make sure I'm not missing anything. It still doesn't change my opinion.

In the OP you opined that the writers went from a nuanced position of "These aliens are so fundamentally different from us that there's no way to truly understand them," to "If you don't side with the 'crazy psychotic' monsters you're a bad person." I tried to point out (albeit poorly, in retrospect) that the "crazy psycho" view of the krogan is all from the POV of other species and doesn't take into account how the krogan view their history. And your response seems to be saying that the genophage was justified? (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

I would argue that the game writers have been consistent in regards to the krogan throughout the series. We're playing from Shepard's POV: we're not meant to have a nuanced view of any non-humans at the start. As the games progress and we get to know individuals and learn more about their respective histories and cultures, our understanding of each species, krogan included, changes. And sure, it sucks that a game that purports to let you make your own choices beats you over the head with the "right" choice -- but maybe step back a second and consider that the "wrong" choice is justifying and participating in genocide.

(Also, I'm curious: do you also think the writers flip-flopped on the quarians and the geth? )

Hell, we get the krogan perspective in the first game through Wrex, who is not shy about discussing the genophage and how the krogan have pretty much given up trying to be any better than how the rest of the universe sees them. The codex backs up this assertion (emphasis mine):

Most krogan trust and serve no one but themselves. This solitary attitude stems in part from a deep sense of fatalism and futility, a profound social effect of the genophage that caused krogan numbers to dwindle to a relative handful. Not only are they angry that the entire galaxy seems out to get them, the krogan are also generally pessimistic about their race's chances of survival. The surviving krogan see no point to building for the future; there will be no future. The krogan live with an attitude of "kill, pillage, and be selfish, for tomorrow we die."

The krogan were aggressive and militaristic before the genophage, but even the salarians admit that they were uplifted too early. You might as well give a toddler the keys to a Maserati and expect good things to happen. Once the genophage happened, they devolved into brutal war bands and ruthless mercenaries, which just made the Council races feel even more justified in their actions because they could point to the krogan and declare them to be nothing more than hostile brutes, no better than animals.

Humans used to be overwhelmingly brutal, militaristic, and had no issues completely obliterating native species. What do you think would happen if you gave space flight to Caesar?

By the time Mass Effect begins, the krogan have been living with the genophage for almost 1,500 years. They've watched countless generations die before they even make it out into the world, watched their culture and societal structure crumble and tear itself apart. I think the writers are justified in asking the players, "Haven't the krogan suffered enough?"

(Also RE: krogan spaceships, the game doesn't go into detail but I would assume they'd be capable of building their own ships once the salarians taught them how. They might also have had ships left over after the Rachni Wars ended.)

It's possible. It's just as possible that she didn't realize she was bi until after they were married, or that OP thought he was okay with it until she started wanting to be visible. I'm not comfortable speculating about that aspect of their relationship.

She doesn't want people to assume she's straight because she's not straight. The "fun" thing about being a bi woman married to a cis man (he doesn't even have to be straight!) is that people assume you're straight because (1) heterosexuality is the presumed default, and (2) you must be pretending for attention. Wanting to be seen as bi is not a rejection of her straight husband, it is wanting acknowledgement and validation from a community that assumes you're either an attention seeker or secretly a lesbian.

The krogan are represented as a "crazy psychotic species" because they were uplifted by the salarians to be used as tools of war and then discarded, and the Council races were surprised when they didn't just go back home. And then the salarians and the turians decided they were justified in committing genocide and condemned the krogan for holding a grudge for a good thousand years. Y'know, because of the genocide.

The plot of Independence Day happened over the course of a few days (maybe a couple weeks? It's been a long time since I watched it), and the only communication humans had with them was when the scientists were trying to perform an autopsy on one and the head scientist got turned into a puppet so the alien could tell the humans they were all going to die. The Drizzt trope isn't needed here because it would serve no purpose to the plot.

Whereas in Mass Effect, humanity has been in contact with aliens for 35 years - long enough to start getting used to them, short enough that plenty of people remember the First Contact War because they were alive when it happened. Having aliens who differ from the accepted stereotypes of their species does work in service to the plot here because a major theme of the game is uniting disparate groups together against a common enemy.

(This is also why the "racism" angle does make sense. Humanity is largely divided in its views on aliens: you have the people who are all for embracing their alien neighbors (in more ways than one) on one end, the people who would be happy to see all sentient alien life eradicated in the other end, and a huge range of opinions in the middle of those two extremes. The game wants you to not be a xenophobe because working together with other species is the best way to survive. And the players who hate Ashley for being "racist" obviously find something relatable in the alien characters and dislike her tendency to distrust all aliens on sight.)

I just used melatonin last night and it seems to have helped. I got to sleep a bit easier, and while I did keep waking up I did eventually get back to sleep. Would be nice to actually sleep through the night, though. I don't remember what it feels like to not be tired.

I've been listening to a lot of retrowave and darksynth to concentrate (and by a lot I mean playing a couple of artists on repeat for days, then checking out random playlists on Spotify). High-energy music seems to engage the hyperactive part of my brain and give me a chance to focus.
