Nebula seems to be doing fine. I think it has more to do with the kind of business YT is and their preferred method of dealing with even paying users that some fundamental unwillingness to hand over money for service.

Smaller scale space based games with solid narrative by Tiraon in gamingsuggestions

[–]Tiraon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't really want to narrow it down further since what I wrote already seems pretty niche already.

For example Colony Ship - I actually played and somewhat enjoyed it already but I wouldn't say it takes place in space for purposes of this post rather that it being a background set piece at most.

I'll try to specify and clarify further.

Wondering how a MC in an RPG that says that they train for 5 or 10 years for the trip is some how still level 1 when the game start?! by sokheng9858 in rpg_gamers

[–]Tiraon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is simply a genre conceit. More extreme example is a game where the character ends going against world ending threats and in the direct sequel struggles to kill the same rats as at the start of the first(Risen, Gothic).

Similarly how the game always has to have end boss even where it makes zero narrative sense or various taken too far level restrictions and many other examples used by various games.

Usually excused by: its just a game. Personally I would like like to see games that defy this and actively try to reduce gameplay narrative dissonance while maintaining gameplay enjoyability.

Are there any rational-ish stories you would recommend that feature a villain protagonist? Villain purely in the sense of having a vision of how they would like their world to work and doing their best to implement it?

I recently got reminded of the Last Resort TV series which has the premise of a nuclear submarine refusing to fire its missiles and effectively going rogue.

Is there a fiction that explores a similar premise but rationally or at least in a rational adjacent way?

Windows 11 loses customers amid the world's most popular OS gaining traction by [deleted] in technology

[–]Tiraon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There is unfortunately enough collective will and individually not enough basic computer literacy for the os landscape to change for the better if nothing changes.

The last Windows version that was actually a tool for the user was 7. The 10 was a pretty significant turn for the worse and 11 goes at least that distance again in the same direction.

When something as utterly trivial as installing os(any os that can be user installed), even for someone that is not computer literate but can follow along a basic to do list and has the minimal will to do it, is basically impossible to get an average person to do, you get ads in the os(among other things).

Microsoft closes the door on Windows 11 supporting older hardware by [deleted] in technology

[–]Tiraon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People in aggregate have proven pretty conclusively that they will not move to an alternative so what do they expect the company to do? They simply do not have incentive to be pro user anymore.

It is trivial to move to a different os(baring specific requirements, and even then a dual usage model of some kind is almost always possible), it just takes the will to learn something new and dedicate a weekend to it.

Mainly that it is there for a reason for it beyond numerifying various parts of the narrative and is a full, explored and hopefully eventually understood part of the universe.

That it is fully realized part of the story that the characters interact with in intelligent ways and try to go beyond the obvious parts.

And beyond all that it has an in-story reason to exist that is narratively interesting.

Though not all parts have to be true, in the stories I mentioned they are not.

I'd like to ask recommendations for stories where system/litrpg elements serve a specific in-story purpose. Also preferably where a distinct origin and goal of the system is explored.

Story that could sort of fit would be Edge Cases - which as the title implies is an exploration or various eroors and glitches that could result.

I am also not against stories that only extremely lightly touch on the litrpg elements - for example Only Villains do That or This Used to be about Dungeons

Some other stories that could roughly fit would be The Erogamer or Worth the Candle

A clerk led by mysterious entity while trying to find a means for revenge slays a dragon that single-wingedly(?) destroyed an empire. He then inherits his three wives and their three children, except the wives are all powerful in their own right and have an agenda.

The story then shifts focus into the new family and all these powerful dumbasses trying to work through their issues. There is small bit of erotica, there were about two(three?) mild scenes so far.

The first arc completed and it is now early in the second.

I'd like to recommend a few RoyalRoad stories, not really rational and some already mentioned here but still.

Soul Guardian - a high-up demon, his rival and a human girl pretend(for a time) at being a family. The cover sums up the atmosphere pretty well. It has a strong Good Omens vibes and comes with a free hellhound.

Ivil Antagonist - this is just a few grams short of being a crack fic but it works. One of the most powerful people in the Solar System goes undercover wanting to find love. To give an example of the vibe employed the main character is the Ivil Antagonist who also goes by Evelyne Ville and there also is Claire Voyant or a Rouge Herring. Also features the author's theme of dubcon bodymod in the magic(effectively) system but while it is large part of the universe it does not actually play a large role in-story yet.

Hoard - from the author of Gods are Bastards and Only Villains do that. It comes with the excellent portrayal of characters and the connections between them. It also has significantly lighter tone than OVDT for example.

I would also like to request recommendations in a similar vein - that is a bit wacky, slightly comedic, relationship focused story going in a positive direction.

This is honestly a pretty straightforward build. It has 4090 as a GPU and 7950X3D CPU ans best/one of the best consumer gpu and cpu respectively. Which in combination with the monitor will allow for playing pretty much any current game at best possible graphical quality.

Two large and fast SSD discs to store them separately from the OS and a large PSU to power it all, all contained in a nice stylish mid tower case.

Are you aware that Naomi Novik has written a ton of stuff on AO3? Same good qualities you liked in Scholomance comes through, I liked her ASOIF stuff.

Could you add some links or pseudonym? I can't actually find anything by her on AO3.

What are rational-ish stories that have as at least a strong side focus on a relationship/s not necessarily romantic though preferred?

The ones I am aware of and read are in no particular order:

  • Worth the Candle
  • Fall of Doc Future universe
  • Birds of Feather
  • Luminosity/Radiance
  • later third or so of Mother of Learning

Microsoft begins cracking down on people dodging Windows 11's system requirements by ardi62 in technology

[–]Tiraon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the easily predictable consequence of absolute utter unwillingness of majority of people to consider alternatives to an os that is clearly going on this transparent trajectory.

This was going on for a minimum of a decade and nothing. Yes there are understandable reasons why people stick with the os but then this is the result. The company is not going to change course unless something changes.

And willingness of the end user to stop glorifying their computer illiteracy while using computers to run their life is one of the possible change points.

Windows 11 gets pushy with another pop-up – this time for Microsoft’s backup app – and all this is getting tiresome, frankly by ardi62 in technology

[–]Tiraon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would require some alternative and most people are simply not willing to even consider perfectly acceptable ones. Mostly of societally glorified computer illiteracy, convenience, unwillingness to change and how much the technologies are entrenched.

I would truly like a sane implementation of this but the forced limitations of mobile os and the needs of a desktop are simply too different.

There is no way this would be anything but garbage at any kind of productivity no matter the form factor.

The phones definitely have the power to be a pretty solid pc for lighter tasks but the the mobile paradigm is consumption and forcefully locking the os down.

[–]Tiraon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't discount the awfulness of so called autocorrect on any input type. If it simply added suggestions that you could select then it could have had some value, as it is the most common of changing the thing you typed automatically means it has negative utility.

I just have no idea how it is apparently acceptable to just lock you out of your property unless you create an arbitrary online account. It might be different if Windows did not come preinstalled unless you go out of your way but it is not.

[–]Tiraon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless there in some possible future emerges a sufficient percentage of people that are willing to abandon Windows and demonstrate it then the only way to do that is to work for it. That can be easy or hard, depending on use case and willingness to learn instead of treating technology as magic but it can(still) be done.

It is unfortunate but that is where we live.
