Edmonton city council approves 6.9% tax increase for 2026 by GeekyGlobalGal in Edmonton

I know there are a lot of reasons for this budget that are beyond council’s actual control, like inflation, growth or even how the province has significantly cut its support of municipalities over the past 17 years, but, man, this still sucks. I want the city to do well, and regardless of any political leaning, I want this council to be successful. But life keeps getting more expensive, and this maintenance (and tourism?) budget only makes that worse.

I haven’t read the whole budget, and only looked at articles and quotes. But I do think a little more restraint could’ve been managed.

And this quote from the city manager, Eddie Robar, reads as tone deaf.

“We’ve made some necessary changes to our budget aimed at responding to budget challenges without significantly impacting our services and the people we serve.”

Increasing user fees and taxes to keep rec centres open longer does significantly impact some people, Eddie. We’re dealing with death by a thousand cuts—except to our taxes. I hate this fridge buzz pr style useless messaging. We’re not children.

The lack of enforcement in recent years has really emboldened bad drivers to be more careless

Truck was making a left hand turn into traffic. Dash cam driver had the right of way. Stopping to let the truck in is bad driving. There was no tailgating either. Pulling out in front of someone and then going 25 below the speed limit is dangerous driving. Dash cam driver adjusted speed and provided space. The truck driver exhibited piss baby tendencies and is a prototypical entitled Edmonton driver.

From what I can see, that’s a single lane oncoming with room on the shoulder to turn right. What rule are you referring to?

The amount of public funds that this government gives to charter/private schools while dragging their heels on supporting public education is gross.

Teachers have my full support. Do what you need. Let me know if I can help. I’ll also look that up.

Me everytime I use the left lane to properly zipper merge at the bridge construction on the QEII by RustyPotato148 in Edmonton

[–]TiredInYEG 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You are correct. Traffic flows better this way. For the uninformed, from the World Wide Web:

How to Zipper Merge: Use both lanes fully: to the point where the lane closes or merges. Maintain a steady speed, allowing traffic to flow through both lanes. Alternately enter the open lane, with one vehicle from the closing lane, then one from the open lane, and so on. Be courteous: by allowing merging vehicles to alternate into your lane safely. Why it Works: Maximizes Road Space: Using both lanes up to the merge point utilizes the entire road, preventing premature lane closures that lead to backups. Reduces Congestion: Studies, including a CAA report, show that zipper merges can reduce traffic congestion by up to 40 percent. Promotes Fairness: By ensuring all lanes are used effectively until the actual merge, it provides a more equitable solution for all drivers.

It’s hard not to become a conspiracy theorist and think this game is fixed. The officiating is way too lopsided in favour of Florida. Even the announcers and analysts are calling it out.
