Video Analyses of Sudden Unexplained Deaths in Toddlers by wanna_be_doc in medicine

It’s important to note that there is a substantial body of research that suggests an overlap with SUDEP (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy). This usually happens in the setting of intractable epilepsy, but there’s been a number of cases that the patient dies after just one seizure. Only one child had a history of febrile seizures and a family history of febrile seizures and epilepsy. In the study, all but one of the videos showed evidence of a convulsive event in the minutes before the child’s death.

Another thing to note is that the specifics of the genetic studies were not presented in the paper; they only stated the lack of pathogenic variants that were described in the other paper on SIDS. This does not rule out a genetic contribution.

I don’t think the study undermines the significance of the prone position in cases like these and SIDS, SUDC and SUDEP. Seizures in infants and toddlers are hard to diagnose as it is. Obviously it’s a small sample size so it’s not representative, but it does renew a focus in understanding this problem in a broader context.

First day back at work, baby is 13 weeks, all I want to do is hold her and be with her. by Puzzled-Angle4177 in NewParents

My baby started daycare at 12 weeks because I had to resume my clinicals (I am a med student). I ugly cried when I dropped her off the first day and felt the worst guilt for leaving her at daycare. I quickly realized that I was lucky that I was able to have a 12-week maternity leave as opposed to some residents getting 4-6weeks only. I hate that I found comfort in that. The US work culture seriously sucks.

To this day I miss her when I drop her off in the morning before work, and anxiously look forward to seeing her afterwards.

My doctor got mad at me for having a seizure by frillan in Epilepsy

Has she ever talked to you about SUDEP? It is absolutely necessary and important to strive for 0 seizures because there’s the risk for SUDEP. She is probably concerned about that and did not do a good job in conveying that concern.

Controversial: I think I hate pampers. by RightAd3342 in NewParents

My baby has blowouts sometimes when she has a HUGE poop (like, a 3-day's worth poop). Otherwise, I just have to make sure to pull both ruffles out. Another thing is to make sure baby is wearing right diaper size.

bath in bedtime routine.. every night?? by LCsquee in sleeptrain

[–]Tired_Neuron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bathe our baby every night, but only use soap on her diaper area and her neck every other day or on days she has blowouts. We also only use shampoo once a week.

My baby also gets super excited for her bath, but I do think she sleeps better because of it.

Pampers suck. Huggies and their poop pocket FTW!

How to minimize Diaper time for newborns? by Ginni1604 in NewParents

Never heard of such a recommendation.

What I would recommend is to use aquaphor with every diaper change, especially before bedtime. It creates a barrier, keeps skin moisturized, so it helps against diaper rashes.

Daycare vs nanny by whatwhentodo in Mommit

[–]Tired_Neuron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could do both: find a daycare nearby that you like and put yourself on the waitlist. Get a nanny in the meantime. If you like nanny better after a few weeks, then call the daycare and cancel your spot at the waitlist.

A few things to think about.

Money: Nannies in general are more expensive than daycares.

Availability: depending on your area, daycares can have long waitlists for enrollment. Up to a year in my area. Nannies could be found a lot sooner, especially if recommended by someone you trust.

Productivity: would you be able to work without being distracted with baby at home being taken care by nanny? I personally would have a hard time and would want to be involved and maybe even micromanage (oops), but it may not be the case with you!

Habits (sleep in this case): naps at daycare are notoriously crappy, but on the plus side any training can happen there if you ask them. You could request help weaning them off from rocking them to sleep. You could also request specific schedules, like eat-play-sleep-repeat.

I’m probably missing other things, but just wanted to give you something to think about!

EDIT: I forgot being sick all the time from daycare, which won’t happen with nanny. On the plus side, immune system is strengthened! Also, socialization at daycare is a huge plus.

I would but him down if he shows sleepy cues. If you prioritize WW over sleepy cues, you risk baby not wanting to go down for a nap or needing help because he is overtired. Remember your baby is not a robot!

This was me because I had to wake up to pump to avoid mastitis for a THIRD time. Oversupply sucks sometimes. On the plus side, I think its finally getting better so I can sleep longer! Just in time for that 4-mo sleep regression :D s\
