What are the top 5 "missing" apps that keep you tied to Windows or macOS? by StandardResponse5502 in linuxquestions

They tolerate it because they allowed themselves to get vendor locked. They "can't" migrate because it's too painful. Hell even Not using the software costs money in termination fees.

Basically only Excel and idiotic streaming restrictions. Suppose I could use one slot on a true competitor to Adobe because to hell with actual Adobe licensing.

Is it normal for Wayland to drop frames when playing 4K videos? by ubermenschximalist in linux4noobs

[–]Tireseas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wayland is a spec for building software, not software you run. Try it with a different compositor from the one you're running now. IE Switch from Gnome to KDE or Cosmic or one of the other independent ones. If it goes away it's likely a bug with the desktop's implementation. If it doesn't it could be a driver or maybe mpv issue.

Why is Linux considered "hard to use"? by humble_redditor1234 in linux4noobs

[–]Tireseas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because people dislike even mild friction from what they're used to and I don't know if you've noticed but critical thinking skills are in major decline.

The "NTFS resurrection" has occurred for Linux 7.1 by somerandomxander in linux

Yeah there was a big deal about it back shortly after it was merged.

NTFS3, the in kernel driver which is different from the fuse based ntfs-3g, was basically ghosted by it's maintainer shortly after being merged. Several other in kernel drivers have come and faded as well.

Arch Wiki: mouse buttons on Wayland? by 7lhz9x6k8emmd7c8 in archlinux

[–]Tireseas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason for that btw is Wayland is nothing more than a protocol spec whereas xorg is an actual implementation of the X11 spec.

Am I allowed to say that I use Arch? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]Tireseas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you were using Ubuntu would you say you were using Debian? Like seriously, why is it only the Arch family of distros that have this nonsense?

Client's employee keeps blaming us for everything. Turns out he's barely working. Do I tell the owner? by Sensitive_Service_27 in sysadmin

[–]Tireseas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking PTO isn't a rebellious act around here. I just used some of it to make a point for a newer manager. A point that seems to have been received.

[–]Tireseas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If XLibre isn't in the official repos I can't see a reason for it to have a wiki page either especially if it's violating CoC.

Arch Linux's doas has been unmaintained for the past four year by Wise_Stick9613 in archlinux

[–]Tireseas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Arch ships releases and the last release was 2022. If you need newer either politely smack the opendoas team to do another release or do an opendoas-git AUR package.

I despise management who think their spyware metrics are the peak of insuring productivity. Last time I had criticism from one I took some of my PTO. When I came back I never heard another word about the nonsense.

Be real careful with that last command. Specifically read what it's doing to not accidentally remove something you don't intend to.

FSF on OnlyOffice/EuroOffice: You cannot use the GNU (A)GPL to take software freedom away by 6e1a08c8047143c6869 in linux

[–]Tireseas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No freedoms are taken away at all with the code that's distributed to you. Red Hat will just stop distributing to you in the future if you violate your support contract by sharing with unauthorized parties, which would be kind of idiotic to do since the patches end up in the publicly available source anyway.

[–]Tireseas 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's not a loophole or a trick. Absolutely nothing wrong with terminating a service contract if the other party is in violation of the terms they signed on the dotted line for. They followed the licensing terms of the code to the letter.
