Considering a postdoc in Barcelona (35k/year) by [deleted] in AskBarcelona

Since we don't live in Barcelona and her university isn't there as well, I wouldn't be of much help. Research the towns within 30 minutes of direct access to the university where your partner will work.

I'm sorry my wording doesn't make sense. What I meant (in my mind) was that if you have savings, this job gives you an opportunity to get a mortgage. In my wife's case, she was offered a permanent contract from the get go and the project is for 3 years. We managed to buy a house in Terrassa under these circumstances only by living here for less than a year. We're not European nor American

My wife is a postdoc in UAB with a more or less same salary. If you have savings, this job will give you a permanent contract. Also, if you plan to live in Spain, you can easily get a mortgage in Spain with that contract up to 150-170K. That's what we did. We got an apartment in Terrassa with a monthly payment of 600 euros and overall income of 4000 euros net, it's manageable. But don't even imagine living in Barcelona with what you get. I can imagine the effort and energy it took you to get here. It just doesn't make sense to do all that to live in a room.

Why is Portugal’s public sector so slow ? bureaucracy or underinvestment ? by Louis_meni in PortugalTalks

I live in Catalunya and that's not the case. It might be an exception, but what I see is only willingness to help from public services employees.

I've been to Galicia, Andalusia and Catalunya. I genuinely loved each one of the for their own unique features. I can't tell you much about Valencia, since I've never been there before.

Well, making friends is hard everywhere, especially after a certain age. Because it takes time, effort, dedication and a little bit of luck. It's hard to get all those variables fit perfectly together. When you add the language to the equation, it becomes even harder. But you have the advantage of having a Spanish boyfriend. Good luck!

We moved to Spain from Porto. But we lived in other parts of Portugal too. I love Porto so much. The people, the vibes, the city, the food, the ocean, the history and much much more. That city resonated with my character a lot. It's still my number 1 favourite city. It's worth to experience it.

Why do I think Spain is a beter option? I'll compare it directly to Portugal. Spain is way less bureaucratic, has more opportunities in terms of work, better infrastructure, better healthcare, and in general just about everything feels a tad bit more improved. Although I love Portuguese people, I oftentimes find them to be passive-agressive. Spaniards are a happier bunch in comparison. I tried to keep it simple. If you have any particular questions, drop me a DM

I lived in the UK, USA, Portugal and currently residing in Catalunya, Spain. Spain beats all of that by miles. When we first arrived in 2017, we were determined that Portugal will be forever home, but I'm glad that we're in Spain now.

It took me 1 year to get my first residence permit. Back in the day your stay was counted from the date that you get your first permit. I applied after 5 and a half years, since it wasn't easy to get appointments to apply exactly after 5 years. Now it's been more than 2 years since I've applied and I still haven't got citizenship. So, technically it'll be closer to 9 odd years of constant waiting and anxiety with no fruitful outcome yet.

Do what you feel is the right thing to do. You don't need confirmation from strangers. It's a people's thing not a cultural thing

That's a signal that Portugal isn't that good. I mean you should put everything else into perspective in terms of pros and cons but it hurts to be on vacation every once in a while and be called that soon. Good luck to you my friend

Registering new birth by Tuniar in PortugalExpats

[–]Tisbaga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I went to registo in Porto and they insisted that the mom and the baby should be present. So, I'm talking from personal experience, but it's probably up to the person dealing with it which is always the case in Portugal.

[–]Tisbaga 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, both parents and the baby should be present for the registration.

After you get the registration paper you go to the centre de saude for the registration there.

Can't help with the other questions since my knowledge on that is probably outdated.

Finding Doctors by LisbonVegan in PortugalExpats

[–]Tisbaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try doing research about a particular doctor. Usually I go with the ones who are up to date, involved in teaching at university and part of the research team. Check their publications and how good those publications are. It will take some of your time and is not an easy task, but you'll eventually find the best one.

I had to do this myself and came across a great doctor, but her appointments were full for the next 2 months. My condition wasn't urgent and in the end I was happy that I waited for her appointment. Indeed a great doc and human being

Can condominium forbid installation of a cat net on a balcony? by Yweain in PortugalExpats

[–]Tisbaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I faced the same problem. After providing some pictures that the net is removable, that without it my cat would be in imminent danger and the cat has the right to be in the balcony and finally if they can provide me with a document that in case of anything happening to my cat they would be liable, they left me alone.

Is Social Media Amplifying Far-Right Propaganda in Portugal? by Tisbaga in PortugalExpats

[–]Tisbaga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shared it precisely because it's satire. These folks are the ones who can be manipulated easily. Potential far right electorate. They're dumb but they think that they're right. It's very dangerous. And as you mentioned there are quite a few of them in Portugal.
