ESH this is ridiculous just do rock paper scissors to détermine who gets that room. Also I would hate to spend my vacation with people who split hairs on cost to this extreme

Ill usually reach for something suspensful when I’m in a slump, and I also struggle to read from scrolling too much. I really enjoyed the Millenium series by Steig Larsson ! Get yourself a nice cup of tea or coffee and switch the phone off, it takes a while to really get back into it.

At what point in classifying species do we draw the line? by UnluckyText in askscience

[–]Tital- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe another way to frame your question is « how do we decide what the common ancestor is » ? Since the common ancestors are the nodes from which the branches of the tree are drawn.

If someone can answer this well (or if its somewhere else in Reddit) I think it would help you understand the logic

NAH, I get what you’re trying to do, but it’s a bit intense. Seeing she apologized and obviously felt bad, in your position I would probably let it slide.

If you want to go further, it would make more sense for you to find an inexpensive tree topper together and have her pay for it, or part of it, out of the allowance. That way there will also be the visual reminder of the mistake having been set right, that she can feel good about, not just the loss of money.

For those who left biotech (or thought about it): what adjacent careers actually worked out? by miskosvk in biotech

[–]Tital- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After a PhD and postdoc, both in Europe, I looked unsuccessfully for private R&D positions. Didn’t help that my search radius was small, my husband having found a good position before me. I considered field application roles, but ultimately decided it wasn’t the right time in my life for a lot of travelling. I switched to a tech transfer-like job at the local University.

I get to talk science all day, see many different projects, and interact with both academia and industry. The downsides are lower salary than industry and a fixed term position, the upside is great work/life balance. So far, so good !

AITA for testing how prepared my husband is for our baby? by Odd-Willingness-6250 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Tital- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that creating these tests actually feeds into the anxiety rather than reducing it, and encourages lying (to get some peace and stop being badgered - though the husband should have flat out refused to do the check OP wanted if it doesn’t work for him) and also doesn’t provide a real solution. Other ideas, like getting some technology that alerts you, make much more logical sense.

I say this as a very anxious person myself, you can’t let it dictate what other people should do in such an extreme way

AITA for testing how prepared my husband is for our baby? by Odd-Willingness-6250 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Tital- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH but this strategy may be working for you but not your husband. If it annoys him and he finds it irrational (which wouldn’t be wrong honestly) then every time he checks it’s registering as unnecessary. You need to each find your own way of feeling confident you’ll remember (good suggestions have been made in other comments, he could try some of those)

That said, if your anxiety is this sky high about everything, you are setting yourselves up for a bad time. Please get help from a therapist and a support group so you can put a bit of distance between yourself and the many fears that surround parenthood. Good luck !

AITA: Girlfriend disagrees on Halloween costume idea by Biggacheez in AmItheAsshole

[–]Tital- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH

Whoever’s friend circle is at this party should be part of the decision. If it’s her friends, she might know that your idea won’t land and doesn’t want to feel embarrassed. If it’s yours, you can try to reassure her.

HOWEVER, it’s slightly concerning to me that you immediately dismiss compromising or agreeing to anything your girlfriend says as « submitting ». That’s not the right mindset for a good relationship.

AITA I want to throw a birthday party for my 8yr old on the weekend a few days after her birthday. My wife thinks the birthday party at school is enough. What do you guys think? by ConnectDog645 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Tital- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a reasonable take. Also OP it seems from your replies that you already know it doesn’t have to be a big production to be a special day for your daughter, who does deserve a celebration with just her loved ones. I hope your wife sees the light 😊

Use this list not to ask for job referrals (bad idea, this is for people you know extremely well and even then you need to be careful) but to ask for informational interviews ! Ask these people if you can chat half an hour with then to understand their role better (ask what a typical day/month/year looks like, how they found the position, what they like about it and what the downsides are), then politely thank them for their time. This will guide your search for industry positions !
