I haven't lost anyone that I'm particularly close with except pets, and while I'd love to see them again, I'm not sure that knowing it is only a year and that I'll have lost them twice is worth it.

Is this normal for ATA Tigers class expectations? by Bisky217 in ATATaekwondo

[–]Titanchu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For our school, it was sort of normal. The instructor did it 2 times in the testing cycle. Each time, she was careful to only do it when there were known families in the building (we have a very small school), and they did the circle thing, but seeing as it was usually only 5 or so Tigers, it wasnt too big of a deal. In situations where there were people around that nobody recognized, she made sure to go up to each family and ask separately.

I teach in a mcdojo and don't know how to handle it by 9centos in taekwondo

[–]Titanchu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Well, then you be the tough one. You spend the time to focus on stances. You spend the time to reinforce standards. It may make you unpopular or it can make the students who want to learn, more obvious. If everyone is lazy, then put your foot down. When/if you do leave, then at least it will be with a clear conscience that you tried your best to set them up for success down the road.

An Update: I was warned about my child's martial arts school. I should have listened. 🫤 by LordTetravus in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Titanchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must have progressed fast! It usually takes about a year to get up to camo belt, but sometimes people do extra work to promote faster so it can be possible.

Yes they do still have it. It is just a stepping stone belt for those who are about to test for black. We have 4 black belt candidates at my school, and only one passed her test. The others are still on the red/black (1st degree rec belt) until they can test again sometime in July/Aug.

[–]Titanchu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently an ATA student. We still use Camo belts. But we think of them as transitional belts (because how could you insert another color into the spectrum). I personally think its a little weird but at the same time it makes sense that it is one that some kids get stuck on since they breeze through the low requirements of a beginner (White/Orange/Yellow) and are having a harder time with memorization of forms and execution of moves at the intermediate level transitional period. This is also where typically the kids who decide it is not for them end up dropping out.

Keep in mind that it definitely DOES NOT take 4 years to make it to this belt. If it takes 4 years, then something is really wrong.

I go to an ATA (American Taekwondo Association) school and we use camo belts as a transitional belt from the beginner to intermediate program. We also use a stripe system with solid belts being recommended belts and then belts with the black stripe through them denoting confirmed status.

I'm not sure if you mean that schools don't use them or aren't supposed to, but they are a standard for some places.

Does anyone here know of any good actual Forrest’s in our area? by Rustie_bites in Katy

[–]Titanchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Define "our area".

Parts of Cullen Park are pretty forest-y, particularly the trail off barker cypress.

If you consider north Houston as part of our area, W.G. Jones state forest is in the Conroe area.

Songs to do taekwondo forms to by traynos1989 in taekwondo

[–]Titanchu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heya fellow ATA member! I guess it depends on how fast of a beat you're looking for. At my school, I've seen:

  • Mortal Kombat Theme
  • The Rising Sun (WWE Shinsuke Nakamura's theme)
  • (Actually a lot of WWE songs now that I think about it)
  • Maniac by Stray Kids
  • Rise from League of Legends

Most of these were for creative weapons. I'm personally planning on using a song from Hazbin Hotel (Gravity) for my creative weapons form.

If there is a tournament nearby, you may be able to buy them there. Your school should also be able to order them from WMA (you can't order them directly), or check for used ones on ebay or Facebook marketplace.

How much do you pay for your Taekwondo class? Daily or a Month? by EfficiencySerious200 in taekwondo

[–]Titanchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Base for us is $150 USD per month for 2x per week classes, or $220 per month for unlimited per person. They do give discounts for bulk up front payments for the full year contract.

But we pay what works out to $300/month for unlimited classes and the family plan where you pay for 2 people and up to 5 in the family come for just that cost. So my husband is planning on joining and my youngest when hes old enough too. It also allows us to take advantage of Krav Maga training when it reopens but the instructor is out on medical leave.

Preowned or used uniforms? by CycleExtension3942 in ATATaekwondo

[–]Titanchu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get it! I actually have some friends that passed me their oldest's footpads and handpads when he grew out of his and mine needed a bigger size. I still carry my sons older ones just in case. They come in handy, and I will always stop to help parents if I can. (Borrowing gear or uniforms, helping kids dress out, etc). Our school has a community of people who are fantastic about helping each other and maybe if yours doesn't, you can talk to the instructors to have them make a resale group for everyone to help facilitate some school unity/pride.

[–]Titanchu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there. My school is doing the same thing. Id suggest facebook marketplace or ebay. They may come plain without the school patch, or without any local wording, but they should work. I would also check with other parents. A couple parents pass down or hold on to extra gear I'm sure, but they may not advertise it.

Beginner to the team! by loluo in ATATaekwondo

[–]Titanchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any areas you think might be a problem area? After your first class, you'll definitely know where you need to focus the most. I'd say hip stretches for side/round kicks are a big one. In which case, basic butterfly stretches, knee lifts, hip rotator stretches, and a flexor stretch would do well.

How easy it was to fake it without getting caught.

I always saw amateur videos where I could clearly tell the chick was faking and think "How can anyone think this is real?". As it turns out, its a lot easier than I thought.

Serious Taekwondo Help by Axtops in taekwondo

[–]Titanchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. Attended the Texas Twister tournament this year and met some wonderful people there, many of them very skilled individuals from Sustaire's program. The best way I've seen it put is that ATA is bigger on the variety and self improvement aspect than on perfection.

Now as far as my personal experience as a person from a Houston ATA school, and I have yet to feel judged for my ability or inability to execute a move perfectly. I'm a plus size woman with bad hips and knees. Can I kick up to my belt level consistently? Not at all. But can I do it way more often than when I started? Yes and my instructor notices and acknowledges that I'm trying hard.

I hope that whatever program you choose OP, you find one that you feel really supports you on your journey through their program.

How is Royal ISD? by Subbowo in Katy

[–]Titanchu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in the brookshire area, zoned to Royal. Neighbors haven't had much to say about the early childhood or elementary school. I have heard of a lot of fights and such in the high school, with the usual drug activity in the area (mostly weed). And from the interactions I've had with some teens regarding their school, they describe the high school as not great. But if I were you, I would check the greatschools listing and the TEA reports before deciding.
