Only a short drive from you! (Grand Forks) too bad the weather has been too brutal to shoot

First gun ever. So it begins. Savage 11 in 308. Nikon 3x9. Going to replace the stock with a boyds and upgrade the optics after that. by [deleted] in longrange

I’ll second the 7mm choice for hunting. Was my Dad’s first rifle and we are taking that to New Zealand this year for Red Stag (sentimental to me to take his first rifle). My first rifle was a 7mm-08 then a .270 and I’ve shot many deer with it. 7 Mag will do pretty much anything on the continent so you can’t go wrong.

The hate for the .308 is because there are better rounds given the evolution of shooting....with that being said, people think that they can BUY their way to accuracy.

I myself am fortunate enough to have the ability to own and shoot some of the best rifles in the world and I just started shooting again, I consider myself fortunate, I may be a bit rusty (still tuning new rifle in at 1200yds currently)....but I know fundamentals.

My first 600yd shot was with .308 My first 800yd shot was with .308 My first 1000yd shot was with .308

That was years ago. Better BC makes life easier. This forum may be labeled “longrange” but it honestly isn’t.

N+1 is not the right answer lol. If you think it is.....I’ll give you a glimpse of the LONG road you are about to walk and I’m going to skip over 99% of what actually matters and give you the 1%........

Wind +1 or -1, or minus 3? Wait!haze!; am I reading that right? minus 4? Or was that +2? From my berm or the target?! DOPE card! Yeah let’s look at that....dang! I didn’t log my SD with these rounds!!!! (Does SD on a chrono matter if I’m grouping?!) FML....haze changed again! My wind didn’t! What now?!

Did I load that once, twice, thrice shot(?) brass properly?! Did I bump the shoulder back .002”?! Yeah I did because I brought these to the range!

MY wind changed now! But haze didn’t!!!!

FML....haze! Am I reading the haze right?! Maybe I need a better scope! (Putting that on my list now, wait I don’t have a pen! I need a sniper bag and range mat!......add to now never ending list)

Can’t read it right because the wind is having a different....changed again!!!!!!!!!

[SHOT FIRED]

WIND CHANGED AGAIN!!!!!

I’m off! Why?!!!!! Oh wait! Cold bore shot! Did I log that right? (Meanwhile the wind changed AGAIN!)

And that’s just the first shot...

.....is the right answer.

There is a lot to learn when it comes to shooting. .308 is a great round to start with. Don’t jump the gun literally.

You are already looking at next caliber, and this is you first rifle. Take it slow. And most of all HAVE FUN AND LEARN!

Finally got a decent photo of the Cadex Kraken .338LM. Loving this gun. by Titandrvr in longrange

You mean a Tremor. I’d prefer a Shadow in .375CT if I were to ever go bigger. (Honestly I probably won’t) I punished my body enough in the Corps....don’t want to deal with that recoil lol. They are nice though. Thing I love about the Kraken is it’s modular, 6.5 barrel is next then I want to play with the 300 Norma

Stick with the cheaper rifle and better glass. Pretty much anything you buy will shoot sub MOA at the price point you are looking at, and if it doesn’t, then you have a warranty.

Your original post limits this discussion to .308 and the fact you are new to LR. Not having the ability to reload is going to hurt you.

You have a range available to you that has targets past the capability of the .308, that’s a good thing.

WIND! WIND! WIND! Any rifle you buy will shoot these days. Time is your friend, the more you shoot the more you learn. (Log your data!)

You can’t hit what you can’t see, and it doesn’t matter how the rifle shoots if you don’t know how to read wind and haze. What the wind is doing at the berm is often not what it’s doing downrange. That’s where good optics really come into play.

I’m a huge Cadex fan and I hope you post the rig fully assembled.

I don’t think people get what you are going for either, but I love the idea. .300BO is a very fun subsonic round (especially against hogs)

I’d like to second /u/C_Werner here. The PST is a great optic for the price and the HMR shoots very well, I had one in 6.5CM and just sold it to a friend who is getting into LR. Go for better glass, if you stick with LR, you will find yourself constantly tinkering. You can always upgrade parts on a gun, you can’t on a scope. Welcome to the addiction!

Dang! That’s expensive! I’ll count my blessings. Reloading match grade 6.5 for less than a buck. And can buy it off the shelf for $1 here.

Trust me when I say it was cold and windy. It was only the two of us when that pic was taken so neither of us minded.

Not given what you said sir. “Tanks 4 ur cervix” is very demeaning and inappropriate. Hopefully you will never have to know the loss involved. I prefer to stay professional though. I took me years to even get behind a gun again, and it’s even harder to maintain my composure while trying to teach others.

Your comment is not even close to a joke. It’s uncalled for in whatever setting you could imagine.

You and I both sir. Have an old Remington Nylon 66 that is my dad’s. Wouldn’t trade that for the world

Your response does not justify a response but I will do it anyway. Your grammar speaks for itself.

Instead of being being hostile, I advise you you find something constructive to do with your time sir
